I'm surprised at the luke-warm reaction to this news.
Bediako could be a four year starter for us. This is much preferable to a grad transfer.
Oats is rightfully building a program that will be strong for years to come.

Strictly talking about on the court stuff and not leadership, is it crazy to think that Primo, Shack, Ellis, and Davidson will very competently replace just about everything Petty and Herb gave us? JD and Shack are on the smaller side so I am a little concerned about losing the size of those guys and their versatility in the lineup. But you could argue that we'll improve in offensive transition and attacking the basket
I do believe the offense will improve.
The 4-out combination of Quinerly, Shack, Ellis, Primo, Davidson, Miles, and Holt are all guys that can both spot-shoot and create off the dribble. We aren't going to have a guy out there on the wing that can't do both unless Gary is in one for one of the wing spots, and he can certainly contribute in a different way as he showed this year.
The defense is what is going to dictate our ceiling.
Our interior defense should be better based on our personnel. Reese was much improved as a defender, but was still just average at best. Bruner was well above-average when he was healthy, but he was never close to the same after he came back from the injury.
Bediako, Tchikou, Wilson, and KAH should give us an instant boost in post-defense and rim guarding ability based on size and athleticism alone.
But its hard to see the perimeter defense being even close to what it was this year. Ellis is the only one that has shown he is even close to Herb AND Petty playing perimeter defense.
Everyone knew Herb's defense, but senior Petty might have been the most underrated defender in the SEC. Losing Petty's defense will hurt worse than his offense, which is what everyone always wanted to talk about.

I think most Bama fans are through the roof with how well we are recruiting, I know I am. Potentially more good news in two days when Nimari Burnett commits too.

The message was that they're going to be limited on bigs next year
This is true, especially if Tchikou is limited to start the year. We’ll be thin and inexperienced at the 5

I think our offense will improve but our defense will take a step back. I do think we have a shot to be top 20 in offensive efficiency and defensive efficiency but I don't see us being a top 5 defense again. I didn't think we would be a top 5 defense this year either though and we were.

My gosh the talent on this roster 1-12 if that happens

I’d easily take Bediako, Wilson, and Gary over whatever we had last season with Bruner injured.

Washington Post ranks Alabama basketball No. 1, CBS puts Tide No. 3 in 2021-22 projections
Number 1??? I must have missed that poll.

Just saw Alabama hoops picked up a commitment from five-star center Charles Bediako. Said it all season and will keep saying: With their style of play, the Tide are going to KILL it in recruiting HS kids and the transfer portal these next few years

Pretty good news to come back to from a working lunch.
I think having a big with more of a traditional big man game that can be expanded upon is a valuable piece to the puzzle for us going forward. He has good feet and his prep coach seems to think he's got a good outside shot, so there's definitely a good foundation to build on there.

And assuming Rojas transfers, that just left us with Tchikou, Gary, KAH, and Wilson going into next year. Carrying 4 bigs just ain't gonna cut it. Even this past season when Bruner was on the shelf we were having to constantly play small lineups even against teams with size because all we had left was Reese, Rojas, Gary, and KAH. Gary coming on strong and taking all of Rojas' minutes saved us bigly since KAH clearly wasn't ready. One injury, a little foul trouble, and you're pretty fricked if you only have 4 true front court guys on the roster.

WHAT ALABAMA IS GETTING
One of the key players on a loaded IMG Academy Postgrad team, Bediako is one of the more developed and dangerous rim-protectors in this class. He seems to break the five-block threshold every time I see him live and changes shots on which he’s unable to get his hand. And while it all starts on the defensive end with Bediako, his game on the offensive end has gotten better this season. He still needs to work to add muscle and become more explosive, but the four-star prospect has developed into a player with a handful of effective low and high-post moves, He can also finish somewhat consistently with either hand.

We didn't recruit Wilson as a Big, he said the staff sees him playing the Herb Jones role. I am guessing this was the role that Herb played last year before he moved to more of a PG role this year.
Bediako will definitely be one of our top two bigs as far as minutes next year unless he gets hurt.
I'd be pretty shocked if Wilson didn't play a decent amount of 5 next year. Especially with Tchikou coming off a terrible injury and Bediako a true freshman.
Defensively he looks like he could do it, and that's all that really matters considering we play 4 or 5 out. He can run the floor in transition and he can shoot 3s on offense, so he doesn't have to be a traditional 5 or a traditional 4 except on defense.
And even there one of the most intriguing things about him is just how off the charts athletic he looks. You put Gary and Wilson at the "4" and the "5" and you could potentially switch all kinds of stuff on defense.
If people haven't seen Wilson's highlight videos, they should really give them a look. Not a YouTube scout, but it's easy to see when a guy's athleticism just jumps off the screen.

Tchikou will be more than a year removed from his injury when the season starts, he should be good to go. I am not saying Wilson won't play the 5 if we have some injuries or need him to but he says we didn't recruit him as a 5, I don't think he would lie about it.
I think its pretty obvious that Tchikou and Bediako will be our two main bigs unless one of them gets injured.

Tchikou will be in the rotation, no doubt. Wilson or Bediako will come off the bench.

Just from looking at film Bediako will need some time imo. Should be a nice body coming off the bench. Crazy that a 6'11 guy who isnt dominant down low will wants to work on the outside shot.

Agree to disagree I guess. A ruptured achilles is probably the worst standard injury a basketball player can have. The common knowledge is it can definitely take longer than 12 months for a guy to recover to 100%.
Not to mention, we don't even know exactly what Tchikou's 100% was to begin with.
Could he be 100% at the start of the season? Sure. Obviously I hope so. I think it's not something we can fully count on though.

Well obviously he's not lying about it
One of the nice things about adding Bediako is he gives us more rotation options with him, Gary, Tchikou, Wilson, etc. Especially if we were having trouble guarding a traditional 5. But in other games it will probably make more sense to have a more mobile 4/5 combo.
