Kind of off topic but what are some good places to eat in Bham? Going there this weekend for a concert. We went to Flemings last time, it was good but looking to spend a little less this time. Was thinking about Saltgrass Steakhouse but just found out that it's a chain so idk, might as well go to Texas Roadhouse if we are gonna go to a chain steakhouse.

(I know Flemings is a chain too, but it's a damn good one, and there's not a Flemings where we live.)

ETA: This Firebirds Wood Fired Grill looks good, anyone been there?

This thread will never be as volatile as it was that day we found out we lost by 30 to Jacksonville State in a closed scrimmage. We melted tf down

Post WKU was pretty bad. And understandably so, to be honest. We were a bad basketball team at that point.

Yeah but oddly enough the WKU was the turning point. We took off after that game.

With the schedule we have, we cannot afford a slow start like we’ve had in Oats first 2 campaigns. We’ll get blown out of the gym and embarrassed if that happens. Do you think we’ll be ready to start the season for a change?

I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt the last 2 seasons

Year 1 - brand new system that requires experience and comfort level to run well, no game experience with it

Year 2 - COVID nightmares made it more like year 1 in terms of crispness and comfort level

I think having back a large group of guys across positions is helpful for us this year - PG (JQ), SG/SF (Shack, Ellis), PF/C (Gary). We have new faces but we also have some experienced guys who have run the system for multiple years. If we come out of the gate in a similar fashion to the past 2 years then it'll start to feel like a recurring issue that we just have to learn to live with.

I’m hopeful that having a returning PG will help reduce how bad our offense has looked at times early in the season. Plus being able to practice together all summer theoretically should help as well.

I feel like football recruiting rankings, as flawed as they may be, are a little more dependable than basketball rankings. Agree or disagree?

Haven’t analyzed anything but I’d say that football rankings are much more dependent on depth of class. Basketball - of you have one stud that comes in he can change your program.

Yea, team rankings in basketball can kind of be worthless because the averages are based on a smaller number of kids and the different sizes of classes can be wildly different (from 1 kid to 6 kids). Individual rankings, which is what Torvik is based around, are probably about the same as football if not better (they see most of these kids play against other kids in real basketball games all summer for 2-3 years).

The reason all the mid-majors who are good are good with lower rankings is because they generally (in the pre-transfer era, at least) have senior laden teams who have played together for 3-4 years. In basketball, if you have a great system, target the right kids and have a group that knows how to play in that system with their eyes closed........you can win a whole lot of games.

Programs like Belmont, St Marys, Davidson, Winthrop for years, Loyola, etc all have a defined system, recruit to that system and have limited roster turnover outside of graduations. They replace a senior with a junior and the system keeps rolling along with players who know exactly what they are doing, their limitations and how to maximize eachother. Those schools don't generally have anybody play in the NBA outside of a random guy here and there (which justifies those recruiting rankings), but they create sums biggest than their parts.

Top 25 Reset: How Transfers, Draft Decisions Changed Our Men’s 2021–22 Outlook

14. Alabama

April ranking: 9

Winning the SEC in Year 2 in Tuscaloosa was a massive achievement for what Nate Oats is building at Alabama. With the Crimson Tide now making headway with top high school recruits, the party may just be getting started. The headliner of this year’s incoming group is JD Davison, an explosive point guard who elected to stay in-state with the Tide and should be a star in Oats’s up-tempo system. Adding another ballhandler to play with Jahvon Quinerly will allow Oats to continue to play fast and attack teams off the bounce, and the return of Jaden Shackelford after briefly testing the transfer portal gives Bama one of the best backcourts in the country. Up front, I’ll be tracking sophomore breakout candidate Juwan Gary, who flashed considerable upside as a small-ball center during the Tide’s NCAA tournament run.

It's okay. It's also a chain, FWIW. Saltgrass was pretty gross the one time I went, but it was right after it opened so maybe some early opening kinks.

Any type of food/place you're looking for, or area of town?

Try this place called “Helen” downtown Birmingham. The owner said he wanted to recreate the atmosphere of his grandmothers kitchen. Incredible steaks and sides. It’s worth it.

So I know everyone is talking about Oklahoma and Texas joining the SEC in concerns to football but are we ready for Chris Beard to join the league?

Didn't even think about that. Plus adding OU in softball and Texas baseball.

Steakhouse, we are staying in Hoover, where it is isnt too important. Is Firebirds better than Texas Roadhouse?

I think so, there were rumors he was back on campus a day or two before he officially announced he was back.
