Yeah I actually think Shack regressed from his freshman to sophomore year on the offensive end.

You gotta think the rest of our non-conf schedule will just be the buy games

Shack is moving down on that depth chart

I love hot takes like that from watching a camp practice for a very limited time at the beginning of summer.

Shack is still doing his individual training for the draft. I’m sure he’ll be back on campus in the next couple of weeks, assuming he doesn’t want to go pro and play in Europe right now.

There's gonna be a learning curve, especially these early months. Even in AAU basketball, he never seen this level of defense and chemistry in his life. And we play damn good defense, even losing Herb and Primo.

We had one of the best defenses in the country last year. I would almost be concerned if I read reports of a freshman from 2A coming in and carving everyone up. Excited for sure but JD is going through those growing pains now and it'll pay off by the time the season gets going.

Shack averaged 29.4 minutes per game his freshman year, 29.3 last year. Look for the downward spiral to continue as the roster gets more and more stacked.

i think shack's massive downward spiral, jk, has more to do with his decision making than anything. yes, he led the team in scoring, but at what cost.

I want Freshman Shack back on the offensive end. Combine Freshman Shack Offense with Sophomore Shack defense and we will have a great player

I don't really think I have any Shackleford hot takes. I just think it's unlikely that he'll see his minutes drop in any substantial way.

That being said, his stats from his first two years are sort of weirdly consistent: LINK

There's a lot there, but some of the high notes:

2019: 15 ppg, 41.3% from the field, 35.7% from 3, 76% from the line, 4.5 rebounds, 1.4 assists.

2020: 14 ppg, 41% from the field, 34.2% from 3, 75.6% from the line, 3.8 rebounds, 2.0 assists.

He even averaged exactly 1.5 turnovers a game both years.

I basically agree with the eye test argument that he regressed a bit on offense and made big strides on defense. However, maybe he just didn't improve any on offense?

(He did shoot only 47% on 2 point shots, which basically means he shot 47% on layups, which is....uhh...not that good).

I'm also not smart enough or committed enough to really understand win shares, but he went from 3.2 to 3.8 (second on the team to Herb). And the numbers basically make sense - his offensive win shares went down a little bit, while his defensive numbers went up.

Now I'm just down a stats rabbit hole. I wanted to see Juwan Gary's per 40 minutes stats (pretty good) which led me to Darius Miles' per 40 minutes stats, which are just outstanding: LINK

20.8 ppg
8.2 turnovers per game
35% from 3 on 11 attempts per game!

And I'm aware that he was given the garbage time keys to the offense, so everything is super inflated. Still an impressive stat line. I am sort of fascinated to see what he becomes, because he does have ability.

Also Rojas with 7.2 fouls per 40 minutes. That checks out. On the other hand, Beetle Bolden only averaged 5.8 fouls per 40, which seems totally off.

Alabama's Josh Primo had arguably the best day of anyone at the NBA Combine yesterday, especially considering he's just 18-years old. Made shots as always but also showed more upside as a creator than we had previously seen, with some really nice passes. LINK

From Jonathan Givony

Selfishly, I'm upset he did so well.

I can't wait to watch this roster go against the best teams in the country. This may be the best Bama basketball roster that I've ever seen, maybe the best in my lifetime. And those big time games are going to get exposure. And that exposure will be noticed by elite recruits. They want to play in big games. Not a cupcake that's on ESPN3.

I am a little worried about Oats and his health. Carrying around those elephantiasis testicles has to be bad on your back. I think the University needs to pony up and get him a good wheelbarrow. Something with a flat free tire.

guy, truer words have never been spoken. #oatswheelbarrow, #elephantteabag, #hashtag....roll tide.

im surprised garys per 40 wasnt 20+ rebounds. i could see it being that in the future. he wreaks of a guard version of ben wallace. miles potential is just scary. a mature miles who plays defense is a legend waiting to happen.

I have ZERO inside knowledge but was hanging out with some friends and one said not to expect Shack back, he hinted at transferring possibly with these others guy coming in. Again, hate to start rumors or anything as I have no clue. But hearing that and now seeing he's not at practice it could be true.

Maybe a dumb question but is anyone expecting Shackelford at practices? He's still in the draft process. He may not be at the big combines but I just assumed he was doing draft stuff (other workouts, meetings, etc) up until he decided to pull out of the draft.

I wouldn't expect him to still be in the draft AND be in Tuscaloosa at Alabama practice/workouts.

Who are "these guys coming in?"

Burnett and JD? On the perimeter, we lose Petty and possibly Primo, not to mention Herb.

It just doesn't make much sense to me, which means there's probably at least a 49% chance it's true.

I dont think he is expected back yet. He hasn't announced that he is withdrawing from the draft yet.

Insider info from there is welcomed and appreciated, but this guy you quoted admits he is clueless on the situation.

Yeah Primo's gone.

Josh Primo looks very comfortable on the ball, given age, level of competition and stakes. No way teams let him go back to school. Doesn’t turn 19 til Christmas.
