Yeah, the roster has a lot of guards/wings with some size that can shoot.

I don't know the new players that well so maybe there's some that fit the role but my concern is another guard / wing --aside from Holloway -- that can consistently break down good defenders off the dribble.

That was already an issue last season when Philon or Holloway weren't on the floor which led to sacrificing defense to play both Sears and Holloway for long stretches against teams with all big guards.

It wasn't the lack of a Rylan type on the bench; it was another "creator" as Oats puts it.

However, since Oats talked about that pretty often, pretty safe to assume he's more aware than me.

Yep. And I wasn't a fan of letting Rylan come back anyway.

I'll feel really good about this team if we get Philon back, or fill that role with a good player. That player might be a guy already on the team. A lot of people didn't think Philon was a PG going into last year.

still need to see more but so far id say amari looks to have the most genuine playmaking ability of the bunch. all can indeed shoot and none seem particularly one dimensional. hannah is a freak athlete with good defensive instincts. the more i see the more inclined i am to agree with the notion that outside of getting an immediate game changer type of player it would be better to role with these guys and get them the exp.

NEWS: Kansas transfer and former Alabama guard Rylan Griffen has committed to Texas A&M, he told @On3sports.

The 6-6 junior and Dallas native brings long-range shotmaking to Bucky Ball as Griffen shot over 39% from three in his sophomore year at Alabama — a key contributor to the Tide’s Final Four run.

Two of those guys averaged more points than Griffen did last season in high major basketball.

Having to use "averaged" because one of those two guys played 8 games last year, which goes to my point.

As for Bethea, I have extremely high hopes for him as he's a good bet considering his pedigree and how awful Miami was last year. Having said that, he still hasn't proven himself like Rylan did in our system the season prior (which is something I also mentioned in the post you quoted).

Funniest part of this is that I have never been Rylan's biggest fan. People were saying they saw flashes of NBA potential his freshman year and even his sophomore year. Never saw that in him (his lack of fluid movement and general coordination doesn't suggest it). I was also not overly excited when he re-entered the portal and thought we could do better. He is however a solid player worthy of minutes on a great team at worst and is someone we could have used now that most of the big fish in the portal are gone. I do understand however if the staff didn't feel comfortable with his lack of focus and the effect he might have on the locker room wasn't worth it.

What Nate Oats Expects From Labaron Philon During NBA Draft Process (SI)

The Alabama men's basketball head coach is "getting really good feedback from the NBA" regarding the Crimson Tide freshman guard.

"We're getting really good feedback from the NBA," Oats said at the Senior Bowl Charities Celebrity Golf Classic in Mobile, Alabama on Monday, per AL.com. "He's got to go to the combine. He's got to test well. He's got to do well in the workouts. From what I'm hearing, I think he's going to get drafted.

I’m going to remain positive and believe that no matter what, we will be much more competitive and entertaining than pretty much any other period of time in our basketball history, but still…

I doubt we pay any football players 7 mill much less a basketball player...this is way out of hand when a kid can make as much or more money in college than in the NBA.

Pretty much every media member that covers basketball has said that tweet was complete BS.

Maybe, but before Oats' comments, there has been little indication Philon would go in the first round.

It is nonsense. Cal got Fland to Kentucky last year for $750K- reportedly. Maybe Cal upped it a little when they both transferred to Arkansas. Did Fland improve his value to $7 million this year by sitting out most of the year, but playing well early and late in the year? No doubt Boogie pulled out of the draft because he can make more in college than his draft projections say he will in the G League, but $7 million. Doesn’t make sense. Of course Kentucky has already spent over $20 million this spring.

Unless I misread the quotes from Nate he just said he thinks Philon gets drafted. He didn't say in the 1st round. From what I've seen reported Labaron is looking for a top 20 guarantee to stay in the draft. Anything lower he'd consider coming back.
