I wouldn’t bet on Wrightsell being one. If he wasn’t ever before for us I don’t think an achilles tear is going to make him better at that.

I envision him as purely a spot up shooter.

Coward is going through the draft process, so if you hold that spot and he ends up staying in the draft or someone drops a bag late, you are left scrambling.

You take that chance over just offering a guy that’s barely going to move the needle. We’ve got 9 guys on roster who will expect minutes next year and that’s a good rotation. Take swings at difference makers and not just bodies.

Also haven’t seen him in a single mock so I think we’re ok to offer him anyway.

Coward would be a massive pickup.

Get him and Rylan. And 1 3/4 guy we all of a sudden have a very strong roster…with a lot more shooting than this past season

We never needed him to. He ran point full time at CSUF

I think he's (or was before the injury) kind of borderline. He was a good enough ball handler to not be a liability against most teams, but he wasn't great either.

Yeah, really talking about "point guards" with Oats offense is a bit of a misnomer that leads to some confusion.

Oats uses the term "creators" when talks at length in press conferences. He simply means players that can beat their man or use screens to get into the lane consistently and hopefully make good "rim decisions".
This is true, the issue is that most of the guys who fit this bill are designated "point guards" or at least "lead guards". The exceptions are wings who can create (Brandon Miller, Herb Jones) and bigs who can create (very rare). But those are going to be tough to find, especially in the portal where we're competing against the NBA and teams with more cash.

Maybe, but he's never really been asked to do that here, because we've had 2 or 3 guards with really good ability to penetrate and create both years he's been here (Sears, Estrada and Philon, Sears, Holloway). Looks like that won't be the case next year.

We still don’t need him to. Running point at a mid major vs going it in the toughest conferees on a top 10 team with multiple McDonald’s all American guards coming off an achilles tear is not the same thing.

Coward isn't gonna leave the draft most likely.

In the NIL era, it doesn't make much sense to leave unless you get a first round guarantee. He could get that, but I would put the odds at significantly less than 50%. He was really good at Eastern Washington, but it's not the best of competition. Looked extremely good at Washington State, but he played only 6 games and all but one was against similar competition except his only meh performance against Iowa.

Houston Mallette posted a tik tok today with Derrion in it still wearing Bama gear.

So maybe it's not a done deal that he's gone.
