We were absolutely a better team with him on the floor, but a lot of that was his offense particularly in the first half. And it wasn't just his defense on Mitchell where he had defensive miscues. Having said that, he certainly wasn't any worse than the other bigs and his offense kept us afloat (barely) early in the game.

I agree with you overall. It's just reached that breaking point where Sears, Holloway and Youngblood need help.

We have to have some semblance of an inside scorer even if it's just a guy who starts at the elbow and backs down the opponent or slashes to the basket. It's just insanity. I hear the chronic complaining about "why does Sears always drive into traffic"... What the hell else can we do to soften up the perimeter? We don't do entry passes and kick outs, we don't do any type of entry pass to bigs in general. So with Mo out of the game, it's either pass the ball around the perimeter and hope a shot comes open (which it doesn't because people know we don't utilize our interior bigs so they just constantly hedge out on every screen) or someone has to create. Youngblood can't create his own shot, Philon has moments of brilliance but he is to raw to be trusted full time and Aden just isn't physical enough to really scare people on dribble penetration to collapse with help. Aden gets finishes at the rim and he can create his own 3 point shot a bit, but teams entire defensive gameplans revolve around Sears. He is the only player on our team that can successfully draw a crowd and soften up the defense.

Agree. Sears can make some bad driving decisions but the blame there goes just as much to too many possessions where the defense has "reestablished the line of scrimmage" 4 feet beyond the arc harassing Sears and every other player is still just handing it to a guarded Sears to create something.

It's just as much Grant (or Stevenson, Reid etc when they're in) since they have 1v1 without much help defense to penetrate and pass. Grant's meltdown as a perimeter threat plays a big role.

RANT: I'm just another 45yo guy who was decently good shooter in HS and have never coached a minute in my life. However, if I were his shooting coach this past off-season, there's no way his shot (3pt & FT) would look like it does now. What the hell happened there?

and the worst part of it, at his height and ability to put the ball on the floor (opposing power forwards aren't going to generally press cover him on the perimeter since he is a threat to drive by them) , he can get that 3 point shot anytime he wants.

Exactly. I thought about it in light of what you said about Sears. Grant may not have been great shooting it last year but he didn't just completely pass up numerous open 3s to try to get the ball back to a heavily guarded Sears.

I'd be shocked if he plays in any kind of effective form the rest of the season. You don't just recover from a nagging hamstring injury overnight.

People rarely mention Wrightsell or Reed being out. It’s a big deal. Master of the obvious over here.

We win Sat, all is well. Should be a good crowd.

Is Clifford Omoruyi the most disappointing transfer of the Nate Oats era?

Not a transfer, but I would absolutely trade him for Bediako's rim defense & rebounding right now.

Wrightsell was a huge loss. A great shooter that we are now lacking. Reid is a stud with length. He has been a big loss. I am sure Oats doing everything he can to make sure available for March Madness.

No imo.

Cliff's per 40 numbers are 15 points, 14 rebounds and 3 stocks with a 1:1 ast/to ratio while shooting 72% from the field and 66% from the free throw line while playing in the fastest tempo in America at 6'11" 240. He's not perfect and has some frustrating moments for sure, but disappointing is not the adjective I would use.

Per KenPom our SOS NetRtg is #2 with an ORtg of #1 in the country. Cliff has overall played pretty well when you consider all of that imo. The defense is definitely broken right now, but i'm not laying that at the feet of Cliff alone or even primarily. What the hell would this defense look like without Cliff in there doing his thing? Much worse is my guess.

I haven't been impressed with Brian Adams so far, but Nate hired him for a reason and Nate knows what he's doing. Hopefully he gets it straightened out quickly or we'll score 96 points and lose by eight and have our season ended abruptly in the NCAAT.

Beetle Bolden and Dom Welch were way more disappointing imo. I would say Nimari Burnett was more disappointing as well so that's at least three guys that I would say before getting to Cliff. We've done really well in the portal when you consider the list below. Almost all of those guys made a made a positive impact at some point in their tenure. Even a guy like Jimmy Rojas had some clutch buckets. I can't think of a single thing Beetle Bolden ever did besides piss me off.

JQ
Beetle
Rojas

Keon
Bruner

Gurley
Nimari

Sears
Welch
Pringle

Grant
Wague
Wrightsell
Estrada

Aden
Cliff
Youngblood

Such good discussion here. The game threads are so emotional as to not even be enjoyable at times. Too many seem to live and die on every possession and the result of one game. The season is much too long for that. Basketball is and always has been a tournament sport. I like our chances in the NCAAT.

Right on! They will get some of these defensive issues ironed out and Bama is still a load to beat. Two less than perfect performances against two pretty elite teams who played pretty damn close to their ceilings.

Nimari would have been great if he didn’t break his wrist and miss like 10 games.

His defense in that Houston game was spectacular.

Defense is miles better than last year. But still not great, but is good enough with our offense.

Have not been impressed with Brian Adams and think Oats need to find a college basketball defensive guy, not an NBA one

Bama Uk line ballooning out of the gate, moved two full points in less than 12 hours up to 9.5, doesn't mean much but can't remember Bama being this close to a double digit favorite over UK since their probation days ages ago
