Of the aspects of Nate's coaching this year, there are 2 aspects that stand out to me as subpar. Keep in mind, this is not an idiotic "Fire Oats" post. Just a critique of how he has handled this particular team.
#1 is obvious - his use of timeouts, or lack thereof, to stop other teams runs. That's been beat to death around here.
#2 is his lack of really settling on a good rotation. He plays so many guys and it seems totally random at times. Especially this late in the season.
No wonder it looks disjointed. We are still trying to play 10 guys in March.
The core 4 haven't changed - JQ, Shack, Davison, and Ellis.
But then we have 6 more getting meaningful minutes:
5. Bediako
6. Gurley
7. Miles
8. Rojas
9. Gary
10. Holt
These 6 play extremely random minutes.
Bediako might play 10 minutes or might play 25.
Gurley played 25 minutes in a win at Vanderbilt on 2/22, and then played only 12 minutes against that same team 16 days later in an upset loss...
Gary averaged 18.5 mpg for the 1st 20 games, and has averaged 7.3 mpg for the last 8.
Miles is the same as Bediako. Its a coin flip whether he plays 10 minutes or 25 minutes on a given night.
Holt played 26 minutes @ Ole Miss on 2/9, and 15 minutes v. Vanderbilt in the SEC Tourney on 3/10. In the 7 games in-between those 2, he played a combined 35 minutes.
The hottest SEC teams right now - Tennessee, Kentucky, and Arkansas, are all playing 7 or 8 man rotations at this point.

that last Ken-Ariz final in '97 was one of the top 2 or 3 games I've ever seen in person.

The rotation thing has been puzzling, he said practice this week would determine the lineup for friday and hopefully beyond. Bediako plays according to matchups usually , but maybe oats finally has said to himself "frick it , im riding with 8 or 9 guys in the tournament"

That had to have been a great one to be at in person. Lute Olsen finally getting a title was great. There were some dudes in that game - Ron Mcerer, Jamaal Magloire, Nazr Mohammed, Mike Bibby, Jason Terry, Miles Simon, Michael Dickerson.

Lucky! Is it awkward watching a Basketball game in such a big facility? What's the fan experience like?

I got lucky and got a ticket on the 20th row at mid court, tons of coaches seated around me.
I've told this before but Oscar Robertson was sitting next to me during the 2 Sat final four games. I never bothered him for like 6 hours or even talked to him until the 4 minute timeout in the last game when I leaned over and asked if he would sign my program. Looked me right in the eyes and said "No!"
That makes for a better story than getting the autograph. But what a dick. I even had the pen ready.

I went to the Final Four twice in Indy and San Antonio, only sat upstairs once and it was on the 3rd row upstairs so it wasn't that bad.

I think this is because there isn't a single consistent performer on the team, and the staff has been desperately trying to get some to emerge to clarify the rotation all season.

Another interesting trend I noticed the other day... I would have told you that we go as Quinerly goes. Good JQ shows up, we can beat anyone. Bad JQ shows up, and we could lose to anyone.
But the biggest correlation I have seen is actually J.D. Davison.
In games where Davison scores in double digits, we are 11-2.
This includes the major wins over Gonzaga, Houston, Baylor, Arkansas, and Miami. The 2 losses were @ Missouri and @ LSU in OT in the regular season finale.
In games where Davison scores single digits, we are 8-11.

It's been my biggest complaint with his coaching. I love Nate, but I think he sometimes gets a little TOO wrapped up in numbers and overthinks things. Play your best 5 guys (within reason. Obviously we can't have 5 pg's out there), and use your next best three to give the starters a rest occasionally.
And Gurley/Rojas are not in the best 5. I understand Bediako can't match up with teams that don't play a center, but I'd rather go smaller and play JD, JQ, Shack, Ellis, and Miles or even Holt in those cases.

A little bit of chicken or the egg there, though. Hard to be a consistent performer when you could play anywhere from 5 minutes to 20 minutes on any given night.
I would like to see us drop Rojas/Holt unless foul trouble dictates and roll with an 8 man rotation through the tourney.
1. JQ
2. Shack
3. Ellis
4. Gurley
5. Bediako
6. Davison
7. Miles
8. Gary
Gary / Holt / Rojas are all pretty redundant. All 3 are hard hat guys (effort, rebounding, defense, toughness) while being offensive liabilities.
Holt is better on the perimeter, Rojas is better in the post, and Gary is a tweener.
But if we're cutting down the rotation for consistency, I say use Gary as the 1 guy who can do either/or instead of using 3 and not letting any of them get into a gameflow.

That's about where I'm at as well. IIRC the wide variance in minutes between Miles and Holt in the later portion of the season was dependent on who was currently in the dog house.
Bediako is kind of match-up dependent but I'd still like his minutes to be a bit more consistent. Gary's minutes have dipped because of his injury, he just hasn't looked the same sense. Rojas and Gurley I don't really have an answer.
Basically, a lot of pieces on this roster but not a lot of pieces that we're comfortable giving a good share of minutes to, and honestly I don't blame Oats. Considering the length and size of the roster we'll have next year, I would like to see a bit more of a set rotation since we'll be able to switch a bit more comfortably.

I'm going full gump mode for a minute here...
Everyone is talking about Jelly Walker from UAB. In my gump world, JQ comes alive and everyone is like oh yeah he plays in the state and goes by Jelly too. And then Alabama makes the Sweet 16 and he shoots like last season.
Okay back to your normal programming.
