Alcohol sales being considered for Alabama athletics events at Coleman Coliseum
Alabama athletics is in the process of bringing alcohol sales to Coleman Coliseum for men's and women's basketball as well as gymnastics and it could start in February, pending approval by the City Council of Tuscaloosa.
Alabama's concessionaire, Levy Premium Foodservice LP., has submitted an application to the city council for a liquor license for the sale of alcoholic beverages at the arena.
"It's still going to be a few weeks away," Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne told The Tuscaloosa News.
A public hearing for the application is set for 6 p.m. on Tuesday at City Hall.
Byrne said UA will be following state and SEC alcohol policies.
"It's something a lot of our fans have been asking for," Byrne said. "We've been able to watch the other schools and the reporting we have gotten back from other schools is that alcohol incidents at their games actually go down once they sell because it's a much more controlled environment."
In spring of 2019, the SEC lifted its ban on alcohol sales at all on-campus stadiums in public seating. The conference left the decision up to the schools whether they decided to sell alcohol or not.
“This new policy allows each campus to decide what is right for them,” UA said in a statement in 2019. “These guidelines will be helpful as we move forward and have future conversations. We have one of the best game-day atmospheres in the country, and we don’t envision making changes at this time.”
The plan to sell alcohol at sporting events on campus only extends to men's basketball, women's basketball and gymnastics at this time.

When asked what promoted the decision to be made, Byrne replied "have you watched the team this year? Our fans need this."

Think about how a twenty-year-old kid is going to handle it when he is physically, emotionally, mentally totally drained and has,as they say of rookies in the NBA "hit the wall", and then you're constantly told that the problem is simply "lack of effort on your part and we're going to fix it."

If you are around Birmingham, or Hoover actually, this summer, go to the Adidas Gauntlet out at Hoover's new 10 court basketball arena by the baseball field. Those kids play three or four games a day with coaches from all over the country there deciding which ones to recruit. Fatigue is not a problem with our players, especially with our frequesnt substitutions. I do think JQ and JD have developed a fear of shooting 3's, but I don't think the coach giving them a gree light is a problem.

Nate Oats updates status of injured Alabama forwards
Alabama forward Juwan Gary could return for Saturday’s game against Baylor, while forward Darius Miles is not expected to return until next week at the earliest.
Gary, who has a facial contusion, practiced Friday and will wear a protective face mask upon returning to the court.
“I anticipate him playing some type of limited role,” coach Nate Oats said Friday.
Miles has not practiced but an MRI confirmed he only hyperextended his knee and does not have ligament damage.
“He’s got a bone bruise in there. He’s got to get the bone healed up to where he can deal with the pain, but it’s not going to be anything long-term,” Oats said. “Hopefully we’ll have better answers at some point next week. I’m not sure about the Auburn game [next Tuesday]. Maybe, possibly the Kentucky game [Feb. 5], hopefully.”
Miles left Tuesday’s game at Georgia in the second half with a left knee injury, while Gary has not played since injuring his face against LSU last week.
Gary, a third-year sophomore, started 11 games this season before his injury. He is averaging 8.2 points and 4.3 rebounds in 18.4 minutes per game.
Miles, a sophomore, made his first-ever start the game after Gary was injured but came off the bench against Georgia. He is averaging 6.8 points and 3.6 rebounds in 18.0 minutes per game this season.

"I feel like every game just comes down to basketball. I don't think the whole non-conference thing really has an effect. I think we just gotta approach it as still another game that we got to use to get better."

"I think it's more mental. In practice, there's no opportunity to get down so everybody's locked in from the start. In the game, we gotta come with the same intensity."

Thanks for the suggestion. I do actually live Hoover. I Googled the event and I might have to see if I can get in. The kind of exhaustion you get completing intensely for 4 days is different from the exhaustion that comes from the grind of several months at that same pace. It's the cumulative effect of months on end that results in the kind of drop-off in performance that I think we're seeing with our team.
