That was SMOOOOTH!! Team had energy desire and talent. Defense was amazing , hands everywhere, rebounding terrific, crisp unselfish passing and outstanding shooting. FTs a little average.
Let’s replicate this game all year. Extremely impressed by this team. We’ll go far. Maybe all the way.

Here are my takes that will totally age perfectly...
- I like JD off the bench instead of him starting with JQ and Shack. Being able to rotate all 3 keeps them fresh and the minutes were a nice balance. Shack had 30, JQ with 29, and JD with 26, no one was overworked. Obviously, it's a long season and we'll see a few different lineups but I didn't mind it.
- The lineup flexibility this year could be even stronger than last season. I don't remember many times when there was a switch on defense and we were exposed, it felt seamless at times.
- Keon Ellis has made the jump. He brings the energy like Herb defensively and he has become an offensive weapon, scoring inside and out with ease. He's already our best two-way player on the roster, could make an argument he's the best player overall by the end of the year.
- Maybe biggest surprise of the night was the bench depth. Gary didn't hit a 3 tonight but looked more comfortable on the offensive side, we know what he brings defensively and makes a lot of plays that don't show up in the box score. Umm MILES has a jump shot now and appeared pretty early in the game. If he can play this way consistently (like Oats has alluded to a lot this offseason) then he's going to bring tremendous value. JD looks like the real deal, he will be talked about a lot, excited to watch him progress.
- Okay negatives? This is mainly being nitpicky so don't take these too seriously until we get a larger sample size. I expected more out of Gurley, he's a 4th-year transfer, so the expectation level is a bit higher compared to the younger new guys. I'm sure he'll get comfortable and start producing. Overall, the frontcourt has a bit to go but we knew there would be growing pains. Eager to see what Tchikou can bring to the group.

Nate Oats said Juwan Gary beat Keon Ellis by one blue-collar point to win tonight's Hard Hat Award.
Really interested to see this award every game now that Herb is gone and it’s a fair competition

Yeah my only nitpick is we gave up too many offensive boards

Gary will get it 55% of the time, Keon 40% of the time, and "other" 5% of the time.

That's a more open competition than it had been. Did Herb ever not win it?

Been driving all evening, just now checking in. Looks like we rolled tonight, is LA Tech a good enough team to be excited about how good we played?

What a night, now I must try to sleep? I was impressed by the number of athletes we had all over the place.

Currently traveling the country so didn’t get to go to the game or watch live, but I made sure to avoid Twitter and any live updates so I could watch without any previous knowledge. I thought we looked really good tonight. Definitely much better than I would’ve thought to open the season and I certainly didn’t expect us to beat the hell out of them. The only player I wasn’t really happy with was Gurley, but I thought it was big a shot finally went down for him at the end. Gary makes so many hustle plus that I wish we could have him on the court at all times, but honestly all the guys played hard tonight and there weren’t really any errors due to lack of hustle. Throughly pleased with everything from tonight.

They're a popular pick to win their conference and were a KenPom top 100 team entering tonight, so yes you should feel very excited. This morning I was skeptical we were going to cover the 11.5 line.

57% on layups is something to work on, but I’ll take 1.310 PPP every time.

57% on layups (I assume anything inside of ~3 feet qualifies) really isn't all that bad. Donta Hall, who almost exclusively took his shots from point blank range if he wasn't dunking them made 66% of his FGs over his career. So basically 2 more than the 12 we made last night.

Yeah, I’m just being nitpicky.
IIRC, Oats likes it above 60%, with a PPP of 1.2 (or at least above 1.0).

Temper the expectations, but….we looked better as a whole in game 1 than I can ever remember.
- JD looked much better than I expected. If he has a consistent 3, then it’s over for everybody else. Ja Morant comp.
- Is Gurley a Bruner clone? Jk, he’ll be fine.
- Bediako’s defensive presence has the ability to win games for us that we would’ve lost last season.

Only two dunks is a bit surprising. They came on a fast break by JD and an oop to Bediako (i think from JD). But we've got some guys who can really jam it home this year. Gary, Miles, both Keons, and Frenchy, plus the two guys from last night will all get some big dunks this year.
I liked what i saw from KAH laat night too. Good energy off the bench and seems to have a better understanding of where to be this season.
