quote:I had penciled this one in as a loss when the schedule first came out, they’re a very talented athletic team, not the best shooters but they can get streaky and put teams away. However, I think we respond today and pull out a not so pretty win.
Seeing line has jumped to MSU -2 in some places. I know we pulled it out against Fla with similar number, but that line stinks.

At the moment, this team is reminiscent of the 2002 Gottfried team where we reached #1 in the AP poll in December, only to finish with a losing SEC conference record snd barely making the NCAAs, losing in the first round to Indiana.

Behind in posting but what I saw at the AU game was a team that came out hungry and focused out of the gate. The defense in the first 4-8 min was some of the best I’d seen all year, especially from JQ. However AU’s length and Jabari making NBA shots over good defense started to “overwhelm” them and we didn’t sustain the defensive focus the full 40min. AU is a terrible matchup for us and yet we had a chance to win in the end. Missing a 1000 wide open 3s and JQ not shooting lost the game. FT shooting was amazing and kept us in it, or we lose by double digits.
I’m still hopeful this team can find the “competitive fire” the way our football team did in SECG and play hard the rest of the way. We’d have to be hot from 3 to do any damage in March and hope we don’t come up against a really lengthy, athletic team (unless that team shoots awful that game), but I’m going to let it play out. Win or lose, I just want to see us compete game in and game out. MSU on the road is winnable, but have to play hard/well.
Lastly, Nate has definitely made some mistakes and somehow things aren’t translating. He should have anticipated the need for competitive spirit with this group and been laying the groundwork in summer and fall camp.
PS: Oat’s use of timeouts in the AU game was again completely baffling. Just no understanding of game flow or team psyche.

Agree with everything except Oats offseason talk, none of us know what goes on behind the scenes, so it’s hard to say what he should’ve done or done differently. Subs were definitely confusing in the last couple of minutes of the game. Almost like he tried to outsmart everybody and not just go with what got us back in the game. I trust we’ll get this going, we’re sitting as a 3/4 seed as we speak, just gotta win today and get some confidence back.

Bediako is getting rawdogged tonight. I hope we see the JD/Shack/Ellis/Miles/Gurley 5 out offense more. JQ and Bediako off the bench running the pnr would be better for spacing as well. Make them run with us, if this turns into the Memphis game we could get blown out.

I've been frustrated at things like this as well at times and I keep reminding myself that Oats doesn't have as much experience at this level as other coaches. He is still learning some of the nuances that come with it and his ability as a coach should improve.
This is only his seventh season as a HC in college basketball and he hasn't even been on the college level for ten years total yet. Look at Will Wade for example, he's only 39 years old and in his ninth season as a HC, but he's been on the college level since 2005. Wade already had 8-9 years of collegiate experience under his belt by the time he got his first HC job at Chattanooga. Oats only had two before he was the HC at Buffalo and only six years at the college level when Byrne hired him.
It's not quite apples to apples, but it's kind of similar to Bohannon and the baseball program where we have a guy that is definitely a good enough coach to run his own program, but isn't a finished product yet as a coach so we will get to see his growth and improvement in those areas while he's on the job.

I can only hope that what you are saying is the cause. From the outside, it appears more like a stubborn philosophy that he thinks is right, even though it contradicts what most experienced head coaches know. Hope it isn’t a pride thing and that he grows in his understanding.

Took a break from the board for a minute, but tonight feels like a season defining game. I love the fight we had in the Auburn game to come back, but the margin for error is dropping.
Lets find out what we’re made of

Also, every game I’ve ever streamed on my phone as I’ve been traveling/not home we’ve won
Well, I won’t be in my apartment tonight and will have to stream it.
So if we win tonight, I know my duty for the rest of the year and will apologize for the losses

Kentucky just missed 6 first half field goals against Tennessee and 0 free throws. They offensive rebounded 3 of those. So they had 3 possessions end with a shot miss and a Tennessee defensive rebound.

Even crazier, as of right now, Tennessee is shooting 23/37 (54%) from the field and 8-17 (47%) from 3.
And down 21…

I rewatched the Auburn vs BAMA Game...
The defense was good the first four or so minutes as a team now that's true. Jabari came out jacked up because it's a rivalry game and made tough shots true enough but he got completely exposed to some degree when Miles was able to defend him with physicality. I think we played great defense the last eight minutes of the game.
JD, Gurley, Miles, Holt, Angry Chuck,& Gary...they were the positives!
OLDER GUYS NEED TO STEP UP OR GET OUT THE WAY...THIS AIN'T ON COACH
I was impressed with Jabari Smith but like I always said Darius Miles probably has the highest upside on the team. STAY ON HIM COACH OATS!
