See I don’t see his speed/athleticism as the problem. Unfortunately like literally everything else is a concern.
I agree that it isn't the main problem and honestly it wouldn't really be a problem at all if he were being effective in some part of the games. But he literally hasn't been effective in any part of any game so far. He's just been plain bad in basically every game so far in all aspects. The fact that he was presented as an athletic 6'8" F that can shoot has got everyone (me) pissy about the fact that he's "athletic" when he can't really guard anyone, can't shoot and doesn't even rebound well for his size. He's just kind of out there on the floor eating up minutes, but not doing anything positive. I want him to be better and obviously he wants to be better too. Still hoping that he can figure it out at some point, but at what point are you just hurting yourself waiting for it to happen?

Does anybody have any clue what to make of this team?
We don't adapt well to being taken out of our comfort zone. The teams we have looked best against have played a game at our pace on both ends. The teams that we have looked like shite against have gotten us off that pace. We may not score 40 against Baylor.
They look like a team who is playing up or down to the level of competition, and when lesser opponents don’t fold, they aren’t mentally tough enough to adjust - yet.

our guards are getting beat at blow-bys"
This is our biggest defensive issue. Our guards are over running and too tight on the ball handler. Our guards are actually forcing the drive and shouldn't.
It looks like we are trying to speed up the game from the defensive end but it's causing our break downs. Our speed needs to come from the defensive rebound, transition and quick ball movement.

Good news is our resume is gold at this point. That's sitting in our back pocket as we get ready for conference play.
God I hate to do this but my brain is so scarred from previous years....what’s the worst record we could finish with in conference and still make the NCAAt? 6-12,7-11?

I know everybody talks about Herbs defense, and rightfully so, but we also desperately miss Petty’s defense too. He was a really good on ball defender his Senior year

He really was and a good rebounder. It is missed for sure.

We were a really good team defense last year. Switchable everywhere. Didn't get beat off the dribble much at all. Great at helping and recovering.
We're just not that this year at this point. Not sure we have the athletes to be at any point.

If the team as we played tonight shows up to play a Baylor team that is on point, we may lose 85-35.

Based on who's getting time on the court right now, we don't.
We have to be a lot smarter how we handle on ball defense. If we don't overplay the on ball defense, it might extend the defensive possession a few seconds but it will help with the blow bys and rebounding.
Oats has to adjust to the strengths and weaknesses of his guys and not force something that won't be successful. And he's got to let some athletic guys get a few minutes every game. You can mix in a Holt and KAH a couple of minutes here and there.

Watching Baylor play Oregon right now and you're right. They have two forwards that are super athletic to go with everything else. Brown is unreal.

So, I missed this one and went to a Christmas party. It's on my DVR. Should I watch it or pretend it didn't happen?
Posted on 12/18/21 at 11:00 pm to CCTider
Pretend it didn’t happen. You will gain absolutely nothing positive from watching this game
I wish I could forget it
Posted on 12/18/21 at 11:01 pm to CCTider
Depends on whether or not you like looking at ugly.
Posted on 12/18/21 at 11:02 pm to CCTider
Pretend ,is a good choice.

It was a win but that's the one positive.

16th straight win at home.

COVID has done some fricked up things to my standards. But I still don't like watching shitty basketball.

Since we are on the topic of pretending, let’s not pretend that Rojas won’t foul out in 5 minutes of play either

Thanks for the solid advice. I'll just have to make sure I have plenty of cold beer for the Colorado St game. Maybe rewatch the Gonzaga, before we started sucking our own dicks.
