No its not reduced, its a solid buyout. I would have liked to see over 15 and I think Byrne probably offered more than 12 and it was negotiated down.

You think Byrne offered 12 tops this time when his last contract had a year that was 12.7?

I agree. But on the flip side, it's also a check on coaches getting stale. Kentucky gave Cal the world in perpetuity and now they want to fire him. Whoops.

To be fair, Kentucky has what is easily the most unreasonable fanbase in college basketball. 3 whole years without a Final 4 and they start getting restless. Though I do agree that Cal has gotten a bit stale. He's not bad or anything, but you could also find 50 different coaches who could get his recent results at Kentucky.

We may never know, but maybe. $700k might as well be a 5 dollar bill when you're talking about $12m. There isn't anybody willing to pay $12m that isn't also willing to pay $12.7m. If Oats strongly negotiated anything with the buyout, I think it would have been the drop from $7m to $1m after the third year. That's basically Nate telling us we have three years to get the new arena imo.

Press conference underway - too many tweets and it’s not online yet

Nate Oats, holding a news conference, says his daughters have "moved enough," and "we wanted to be here" at Alabama

Nate Oats: "The extension's done. We're not going anywhere. We didn't want to go anywhere."

I don't think Oats negotiating a slightly lower buyout has to mean that he desires to leave or look elsewhere. I'm not sure anyone would want an incredibly high buyout to begin with even if you're coaching at your dream job.

Also, if your buyout is incredibly high it has to be harder to have much pull when you're not the primary sport at the school you coach. Considering some of the recent NIL issues for basketball and the constant delays on the new arena since arriving, I'm not sure I'd want a high buyout either even though I'm one of the program's biggest fans. If nothing has changed in 2 years, you have some (very) significant leverage in those regards.

Oats said Greg Byrne's latest estimate for the project is $250M, up from $130M when it was announced.

Nate Oats says the UA athletic department is "fully behind" building a new arena.

Oats said he's talked to members of the board and "they all know the importance of it."

"We need more [donors] to give," Oats said. "That's where it's basically at."

Yeah its a good buyout for both sides. Really the only ones that would pay that much are the cream of the crop bball schools.

What I'm hearing is "it's really great here. I like it here. It'd be a real shame if there's no new arena and Saban keeps getting all the NIL money though."
