I will say it seems like Oats respects Stackhouse’s sets a lot more than other coaches. He has hyped up his schemes in the past a lot more than our other opponents I’ve felt like.
When it comes to offensive Xs and Os they're the two best in the SEC by a pretty wide margin. Stackhouse just doesn't seem to be able to get much recruiting traction and it's hard to play good defense if you aren't getting dudes who are long and athletic.

I wish we played at 6 tonight instead of 730.

I'm going to have to watch the replay. The wife made plans for us and the neighbors to go to some bar at 7:30 and play BINGO of all fricking things. LOL. At least they'll have beer and I can keep up with the score on my phone.

Brandon Miller is the TRUTH despite all the negative stuff Jimmy Dykes says.
From a Houston fan on Reddit...
quote:
He completely shut down Sasser, an all-everything guard nearly 8 inches shorter than him. The man's defense is fricking outrageous.
quote:
Someone that tall and long should not be able to keep up with a 6'1 lightning-quick guard. Absolutely unfair lol
As good as Miller has been, and as much praise as he's gotten. He really hasn't gotten much love for his defense. But he's been a fricking monster on both ends of the floor.

From the Athletic...
Basically, they're doing a "Magic 8" and listing the 8 teams he thinks can win a championship. It's something Grant Wahl used to do when he worked at SI.

quote:
One of Kansas, Purdue, UCLA and 5 others will win the college basketball title
quote:
When noted soccer journalist Grant Wahl died unexpectedly last month while covering the World Cup in Qatar, a few people, recalling Grant’s previous iteration as a college basketball writer at Sports Illustrated, suggested that I reprise his annual “Magic Eight” column. Grant and I worked the college hoops beat together at SI for several years, so I was familiar with the idea. Every January, Grant would produce of group of eight teams from which he guaranteed that year’s national champs would emerge. The idea was to be correct but daring. In the seven years he did it, only one team from outside Grant’s Magic Eight — Syracuse in 2003 — cut down the nets. Pretty good for a soccer guy.
And so, both in service to my readers and in honor of my friend, I herewith friend, I herewith pass along to you my first-ever Magic Eight. I absolutely, positively guarantee that the 2023 national champ will come from this list. (Unless it doesn’t.)
Just like Grant, I tried to take some chances without being self-destructive. I stayed away from hard-and-fast rules, except for one: I refused to put a team on this list that is not currently ranked in the top 30 in adjusted defensive efficiency on KenPom.com. The data supports this tack. Over the last 11 years, no NCAA champ has been ranked lower than 22nd in defensive efficiency. Last year’s winner, Kansas, was 17th. That was actually on the low end as the average rank for those past 11 winners was 10.5. Turns out all those curmudgeonly coaches have been telling the truth all these years: Defense wins championships.
Here, then, in alphabetical order, is the 2023 Magic Eight, along with eight teams whom I considered but didn’t make the cut:
quote:
Alabama
I would never pick a team to win the national championship if it relies too heavily on a freshman. That is, is, unless that freshman is Brandon Miller. The 6-9 forward wasn’t exactly under the radar (he was ranked No. 11 in the Recruiting Services Consensus Index), but no one foresaw that he would be this dominant. Miller is averaging 19.5 points (on 46.3 percent 3-point shooting), 8.2 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game. Though he is one of three freshmen in Alabama’s starting lineup, the Tide also have some upperclassmen who are contributing. They are also about two weeks away from adding Glue Guy sophomore guard Nimari Burnett, who hasn’t played since Dec. 10 because of a wrist injury that required surgery.

I feel for you. BINGO is the diaper of games. Real popular with young children and the elderly, but not a big market for the in between.

Blows my mind that a borderline NBA Hall of Fame guy can't recruit. It doesn't seem like it should be that hard for those guys.

I just can't figure Vanderbilt and Stackhouse out.
I feel like I watch them 4-5 times a year against good teams (us, Auburn, Tennessee, Kentucky) and always come away impressed with how they play. Then I look at their schedule and see they've lost to Grambling and Southern Miss.
Also, he hasn't recruited horribly, just not elite guys. They developed Disu and then he left. Stute and Lawrence were top 250 players. Daniels, Desinie and Dorsey are top 250 guys. 3 top 125 players that are freshmen this year (Dort, Shelby, Smith).
They are a more efficient team than their record almost every season under Stack.
#89 this year but 9-8
#62 last year but 19-17
#95 2021 but 9-16
Just kind of a weird puzzle to try and figure out.

Burnett guarded Sasser about the whole game and shut him down, I dont remember Miller guarding him much but I might be wrong, it was a while ago.
Speaking of, I am excited to get Burnett back. He is a beast on defense.

Stackhouses teams have always played Oats’ Alabama teams tough.
Seems like Vandys main problem is playing down to their competition vs bad teams. They also seem to play up to their competition in big games too, especially at home.

I asked if it was at the senior center. I'm getting old, but I thought I had a few years before bingo became part of my life. After reading up, I think it's at a lounge and the bingo is free and the prizes are drinks or food. Still, I wish she could have scheduled social night on a nongame night. I'll probably get 4 hours of sleep tonight because I won't be able to not watch the replay when we get home. The alarm goes off at 4:30 tomorrow.
I'll also add, that when she told me last week I said, "Bingo? We're going to play Bingo?" To which she replied, "You don't remember me asking you a while ago?" Yes, yes, I was listening.

Exactly. Capable of losing to a Grambling. Winning vs an Arkansas.
They'll be focused vs our guys.
Hopefully, our guys will be focused as well. Getting out of Ttown for the game should help.

Every Stackhouse era Vandy game I watch I'm like "man, this team has some studs and run some beautiful offense" and then I look at their record they are barely above .500.
Edit: Just scrolled up to see SOG made a much more eloquent version of this post. Sorry
carry on.

I know Vandy has a way to allow athletes to have a little easier academic path than regular students (like all schools) but I still wonder if Vandy academics and culture is an impediment at all (whether actual or perceived) for some elite guys and one and done types.

Dude, I mean isn't it the truth?
Wow they run great stuff, they've got some nice players, what the hell they lost to Grambling?

I don't see how MSU hangs with the Vols tonight but that would be nice surprise if State could win it.
Loser of Mizzu-Ark tomorrow is not going to feel good.
We are better than they are.
