I agree with everyone else about the potential of this team especially if and when the shooting picks up. I think some of that was first game jitters. As for the turnovers, I think a lot of our issue is Coach Oats preaches playing so fast that we almost speed up too much which causes sloppy play at times. I would like to see us continue to play fast but more under control. I feel like you can do both.

Agreed on tempo. They have to learn when to slow it down and when to speed it up. Two years ago we were great at that. Last year we were awful at it. The Memphis game was a great example of that. They drug us down into a glorified playground game, which was the only style of basketball they knew how to play. When we dictate the pace and play our game we have always been a really good team under Oats. When we lose control of the pace we have consistently struggled.

Well, we couldn't defend a lick last year so Memphis took advantage of that as well.

Per Erik Haslam:
quote:

Liberty may be the best team in the Atlantic Sun Conference, with a reasonably potent offensive attack.

Liberty lives and dies by the three-ball and will launch from long-distance early and often. The team ranks 18th in ratio of three-point attempts to total field goal attempts, and they make approximately 36%. Liberty also has a keen ability to drain field goals between the three-point line and the low post.

Liberty is a solid rebounding team and is pretty good at preventing teams from hitting shots in the paint.

As others have said, should be interesting to watch how we respond both offensively and defensively around the perimeter in this one.

Hope to see a bunch of y'all there Friday. I thought the crowd Monday was kind of pathetic for a season opener with a bunch of new highly touted freshman faces.

7:30 is a bit of a late start on a Monday for people with kids. Tomorrow night should be a lot better.

Our social media team is a joke. They just posted a video for tomorrow’s game saying the tip-off is at 7:30…it starts at 7

Feels weird to have not done that hire before the season started. I guess Baumann is full on analytics and doesn’t have time for the other DOBO duties?

I also noticed Arnie Guin’s name isn’t on the support staff roster so maybe the mental coaching wasn’t actually working.

Must be the case. He is listed as Director of Scouting and Analytics and this is what his bio says he does after the promotion from DOBO:

quote:

In his current role, Bauman is responsible for a variety of aspects of the men’s basketball program including but not limited to, overseeing the budget, scheduling, analytics, camps, advance scouting of opponents, while also assisting coach Antoine Pettway on the offensive side of the ball.

Alex Alcetta isn't listed either. Last year she was listed as Director of Operations. A few other Support Staff is gone as well. Last year we had 15 listed and this year it is down to 10.

Calling them a joke seems pretty strong. They made a mistake, not a big deal.

Anyways...looking forward to the test tomorrow. Should be another step forward in figuring out what we have in this team this year.

Notebook: Alabama basketball readies to face elite Liberty guard

The Alabama men’s basketball team will host Liberty on Friday, Nov. 12, at Coleman Coliseum. The Flames are coming off a 104-38 victory over Regent and have one of the best guards the Crimson Tide will face all season in redshirt senior Darius McGhee.

The two-time Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year, McGhee averaged 24.6 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game and led Division I in total three-point field goals made (142).

The 5-foot-9 guard from Roxboro, N.C., has Alabama’s full attention before Friday’s matchup.

“He’s one of the best scorers in the country,” head coach Nate Oats said Thursday. “He’s an elite shooter. Think of like a Steph Currey, Trae Young type. He shoots them off the dribble, catch and shoot. He doesn’t need much space. He can get going in a hurry. They’ve got real good awareness of where he’s at. Their guys are great screeners, know how to get him open.

“They definitely go as McGhee goes. ... We’re fully aware of that, and we’ve gotta make sure we’ve got a good game plan for McGhee and the right matchups. Nobody can fall asleep. Even if you’re not guarding him, if your man’s setting a screen, you’ve gotta know what you’re doing.

“We’re locked into McGhee, but we also know they’ve got capable scorers elsewhere. You can’t let a kid like (Brody) Peebles or (Colin) Porter or even (Kyle) Rode, who shoots it really well and will go at mismatches and switches and stuff. He’s good, though. He’s one of the better guards we’re gonna see all year. It’s good for us to go against different types of teams, and this team’s got a really dynamic guard and I’m interested to see how our guys step up to the challenge.”

HOW TO IMPROVE 3-POINT SHOOTING

The Tide hasn’t shot well from beyond the 3-point line in its last two outings. Against Southern Illinois, Alabama was 3-for-22 (14 percent) in the charity exhibition but managed to top that by going 3-for-28 (11 percent) in its season-opening win over Longwood. UA won both games, and the most recent contest saw it dominate on the defensive end and on the glass (67-38).

Oats was asked what the focus has been this week in practice to get a better percentage.

“We stressed moving the ball a little bit more,” Oats said. “Let’s get better shots, Let’s make sure that guys are more in rhythm. Some of the shots were great shots, they just missed them. If you look at the guys that took a lot of the shots and missed them, I mean, Rylan, a freshman. Brandon Miller, a freshman. Nimari Burnett, first game in about two years. Sears has been doing it pretty well for a couple years at Ohio, but first game here, back in his home state, playing for Alabama. There may have been some jitters to some of that.

“I didn’t make a big deal of it. I told our guys I’ve seen them make enough shots in practice and the foreign trip. I’m not too worried about the shooting. As long as we get good shots, we’ll shoot a decent percentage. I’m not gonna stress over it. We’re gonna make sure we get good shots, make sure the ball moves a little bit better and just keep encouraging them to take every open shot they get.”

WELCH DOUBTFUL FOR LIBERTY GAME

Alabama was without guard Dominick Welch on Monday, as the graduate transfer was dealing with a lower-body injury. Prior to Game 2, Oats provided the latest on Welch’s availability.

“Doubtful, to be honest with you,” Oats said. “He’s trying to get back in practice a little bit more, but it’s coming slow and we just wanna make sure we take the time it needs to to fully heal because we need him fully healthy. We don’t him partially healthy for a long time. We’d like to get him back fully healthy. So doubtful for this game, hopeful for next week.

“But we’ll see what he feels like tomorrow morning.”

I’ve mentioned this before but its just been mistake after mistake from that account since the summer and whoever they have writing the pre and post game articles has at least 50 typos per article. It’s just unprofessional.

Got to watch some of the WBB game Monday before Longwood - this young lady stood out.

Karly Weathers: From Tennessee to Tuscaloosa (SI)

The lone freshman of Alabama women's basketball comes from an athletic family, but she is ready to compete on the next level.
quote:

The season just got underway, and Weathers had a strong debut: 15 points on five shots, including 3-for-4 from the three-point line while making all four free throws to go with four steals.
