I will say our rebounding so far this season has been much improved. We average 11 more rebounds a game than our opponents.
I wonder if that’s a trade off for defensive turnovers somehow?

With the style of play, Oat's teams will never be great in the turnover department. But, with all the young guys learning to play fast this year, plus JQ struggling, we're probably averaging several more than is acceptable. If they'd stop forcing passes that aren't there, we'd be headed in the right direction. Getting more turnovers on the other end would also help a lot.

Speed of offense will definitely increase total number of TOs per game, but it can’t increase the TOs per possession unless playing at the speed gets you much better scoring opportunities on the non-turnover possessions than would otherwise be the case. That seems to be the only logical justification that would make sense to be ok with a higher per possession TO rate. One could calculate the necessary increased shooting %s to make up for an additional TO per 100 possessions to break even, but I’m too lazy to do it.

Our offensive turnover rates the last 2 seasons have been significantly higher than pretty much any Oats team.
2023 - 21.9% (#319)
2022 - 19.8% (#274)
2021 - 18.6% (#158)
2020 - 19.1% (#204)
2019 (Buffalo) - 16.0% (#27)
2018 (Buffalo) - 16.5% (#48)
2017 (Buffalo) - 19.8% (#263)
2016 (Buffalo) - 18.8% (#226)
He had experienced guards who had years in his system in 2018 and 2019, so that probably explains why those teams were so good at playing fast but not turning it over.
There is an expectation of more turnovers than an average team I think, but we've ballooned that was out of proportion the last 2 seasons.

I've read that 8 times, I'm still not sure I'm following you.
But, playing fast can definitely increase your TO's per possession, because you're playing fast. That is a lot more difficult than walking the ball up the court, and making safe passes into the post, or whatever.

Id say the past two years Oats has played the toughest schedules of all those years too.
Not sure if there much correlation, probably not since we turned it over a lot last night vs a pretty bad team too.

You're right though, there probably is a correlation to some degree, but honestly a lot (a lot) of it seems to be lazy or just careless passing.
I'm not sure if this is a function of 'gelling' with each other, but perhaps these numbers will go down as these younger guys get a better feel for the speed of the game and where their teammates typically are on the court (especially in transition).
At least the alley-oop success rate has improved. There was a time earlier in the season where I swear it felt like we started off 0/10.

Iowa is about to lose as a 30+ favorite today. Playing games this close to Christmas is dangerous.

Quick example ignoring 3 point shots:
Slower pace offense:
20% TO
45% score 2 pts
35% miss shot
Faster pace offense:
30% TO
50% score 2 pts
20% miss shot
You might choose a faster pace offense with more turnovers if you are getting better looks in the 70% of possessions you don’t turn the ball over. In the end, you may still be scoring more points.
This was obviously a very simplistic example and doesn’t take into account the other team’s points off live ball turnovers, but it shows you could score more points even with higher turnovers if you’re getting materially better looks.

I’m sure there’s a site that will spot out tempo vs turnover ratio to see if there’s correlation.
Just a quick look at the teams with highest tempo and I didn’t see any teams inside the top 150 in turnover per possession %

Yep. No one wants to be there. They're all mentally at home already.
