Just a few next morning notes:
- It's obvious we missed Burnett last night, it's hard to find a more difficult team/player to go against right after learning your best defensive player will be out. However, I thought Bradley did a really good job even though some of those shots against him still somehow fell.
- We are who we thought they were, in regards to the returning players. JQ has a unique ability to actually create offense and get something going and is capable of hitting shots. At the same time he was once again a turnover machine and liability on defense. He doesn't really look like a 6th year player when watching, hopefully he gets it figured out by conference play. Gurley hit a couple shots and he's gotten better on the boards but that defense still needs a lot of work and every time he tries to create for himself it's basically a turnover. Miles made a couple defensive plays, brings energy, and hit an open shot but the energy he brings is like a "chaotic" energy, going to be some good and bad. Bediako was good from what I can tell but gotta be honest, he seems like a transfer candidate after this year. He can either keep adapting and take the growing pains of being in an NBA system or he can go to the Big 10 and do really well and hope for a higher pick.
-Loved seeing Miller wake up after getting posterized. Glad to see he has that dog in him, he went absolutely nuts after that moment. He should've gotten the ball more down the stretch. He does have some things to work on but as long as our big 3 of freshmen continue to improve, this team really does have a "sky is the limit" potential.
- This is a really big win for Alabama. Memphis will be a top team come March. The team is apparently older than an NBA team and Hardaway is coming along quick as a HC. To win this game coming off one of our biggest wins ever and in a potential look ahead spot with Gonzaga, says a lot about the make up of this team and staff. This is also a Memphis team that has already beaten 3 SEC teams all by 9+ points, this will be one of our best wins by the end of the year and shouldn't be taken lightly since they're not ranked.
That was a bit more than I thought I would type but I just woke up very enthusiastic for the rest of the year. We just need to keep it together until Burnett gets healthy and then go on our run.

100% agree. Given all the circumstances that was a fantastic win.
Now Gonzaga is high reward and little risk. We’ll essentially be a consensus 1-seed going into conference play with a win but nobody will care if we were “only” able to take 4 of 6 against MSU, Uconn, UNC, Houston, Memphis, and Gonzaga

I think we're going to come out fired the frick up in a rowdy atmosphere and take it to them. But yeah, if we drop that one it's not a big deal. We did what we needed to do OOC.

If we could get someone to apply deer antler spray to Dom Welch's calf I would feel a lot better about the next 6-8 weeks.

Apparently Dom is very very close to playing from what I’ve heard. I know he’s been “day to day” since the season started, so saying he’s “very close” really isn’t gonna ease the nerves but I feel like he actually is close this time

Dropped 30 without a three pointer while being face guarded most of the night. It's why I wanted us to pursue him in the off season. He's tough.
He's definitely a badass. He even did a good job of creating for his teammates during a stretch where Bradley was all over him. I love Sears, but Davis is a baller.

Good. He can pick up a lot of the slack from losing Burnett.

I hope so, but I worry that sometimes we're putting too much on him with the "when Dom Welch gets healthy" talk.
At this point he's starting to become mythical.
When it comes to Alabama basketball, I'm too used to the pain of things not working out as planned, so this situation is really making me gun-shy.

Better work on in bounding the ball

We should ask Avery Johnson to drop back in and suggest some sets
I think that can be arranged.

BTW, how many of us thought "oh, shite" last night when Miles got early PT?
That would be the censored version of what I said.

Gotta give him credit, dude balled out (to the best of his ability) when the opportunity arose
Yep, i was glad to see him do well. He still hasn't gotten much better at handling the ball. But he's an acceptable spot up shooter. And for the first time this season, you could tell he was hustling (not to discount an early season injury). Played good when Griffen had some freshmen moments and with Nimari being out. I'm sure that was a nice confidence booster for him. I still don't want him trying to create offense, because he is turnover prone. But the dude can definitely have a role in this team and contribute positively.

If not for this damn project in Georgia taking twice as long as they were supposed to, I'd take them. But instead, my arse is stuck in the middle of bum frick nowhere south central Georgia.

First, I'd like to say that I was thrilled to win this game. This had trap game written all over it. The fact that Memphis has been the beneficiary of facing us coming off of two emotional highs and a quick turnaround off an extremely physical and hard-fought game for 2 years in a row, I am absolutely okay with splitting that series.
Having said that, the defense came back down to Earth for this game. Not horrible on that end by any means, but the amount of blown coverages in this game we're reminiscent of last year. The difference? We competed defensively on every other possession where this wasn't the case. Given the intensity that we still played with, I think we can feel confident in saying that the defensive lapses today we're a result of mental or physical exhaustion from the Houston game.

Agree, we had some coverage lapses for sure. Part of that was some excellent scheme stuff by Penny and part of it was due to over attending to Davis. Also, I'm guessing they watched film of how we played Sasser and knew we'd likely do the same to Davis and had some sets drawn up to take advantage. We also had some just absolute mental breakdowns, especially after made baskets. Oats was rightfully furious at them.
Finally, Davis just made some "tip your cap" midrange shots.

Alabama's 40 free throw attempts in last night's 91-88 win over Memphis was the most the Crimson Tide has had in a game since February 29, 2020, when they shot 47 in a 90-86 win over South Carolina.

Alabama also made 29 of those 40 free throw attempts (72.5%). That is the highest percentage Alabama has shot from the line in a game where they shot 40 or more free throws since November 17, 2014, when they went 32/42 (76.2%) in a 80-74 win over Western Carolina.

Gotta keep shooting well from the line like that. We are so good about getting there that it should be a major source of easy points for us.
