The good news is that Maryland chased us off the three point line better in the first half than anybody has this season. We adjusted, but it definitely threw us off in the first half. Sounds like we'll get the same treatment from SDSU.

Yep - it sounds like SDSU will be very similar defensively to Maryland in terms of approach and style.

Wild stat - Baylor allowed opponents to make 71.3% of their shots at the rim this season. That is #363 out of 363 in D1 (dead last).

No surprise Baylor lost (edited) but was hoping to get them in Elite 8. Their defense was just awful in the couple of their games I watched and this stat pretty much confirms it was normal for them.

I find myself watching a lot of west coast teams late nights. Really enjoy the Mountain West et al games.

What makes San Diego St a good team is that, in addition to playing tough-minded and we'll organized defense they're upperclass heavy with players who make big plays at key times.

They have more capable players on offense than Miss St but can look really out of sorts in getting forced into contested mid-range shots.

I agree that if we bring the same defense we've played since the SEC tourney they aren't going to get a lot of good shots and are not a team, like Creighton for example, that one game every four may hit 10 contested deep 3 pointers.

If we don't turn it over needlessly in half court offense and don't shoot 2-20 from deep this game should look similar to our SEC tourney and Maryland games.

Man I hope the Chicago, Huntsville, Nashville, Birmingham, and Ttown Gumps make the trip. I’d be stunned if Princeton or SDSU fans bring a lot. No reason we can’t have 10,000+ fans in the 22k arena

Creighton/Baylor you mean? But yea I agree, while Baylor has scary guards offensively they are a truly putrid defensive team this year.

I think that's about right in terms of a general outlook on this one. They will muck it up, slow tempo and it will probably be uncomfortable at halftime and maybe even at the 10 minute mark of the game, but I think if we run good offense (and don't shoot an abysmal %) we should be able to get to an 8-12 point lead in the last 5-7.

The best news about this is that an older, long, defensive team is not something that will be a shock to us. We've played a whole bunch of these teams this season and a lot even in the last 4 weeks (Tennessee, Arkansas, Auburn, State, A&M, Maryland).

You can, but they've played a mid-major schedule since then, which makes it hard to put a ton of stock in that stat (which I've heard too). Sure it is adjusted to opponent, but when none of your opponents are Top 25 teams and only 2 are in the Top 50.......hard to get a judgement

makes sense. thanks.

There is no doubt that they are a very, very good defensive team. Have been every year for 15 years now.

Definitely a good point about their schedule.

Mountain west teams has better teams than many people think but we're going to be the first team since Arkansas back in November they've played where they don't have the better athletes, and considerably better in most of them.

I didn't remember that they were probably the 2nd most screwed by the COVID tournament cancellation in 2020 behind Dayton (and Kansas, but for Kansas it wasn't a "best team of all-time" possibly like Dayton or SDSU). They were 30-2 that season.

They've played the easiest first 2 games of the tournament by far for any team still around.

SDSU's last game against a Power 5 opponent was before Thanksgiving.

agree. I know as a coach watching them play defense, I was very impressed. The way they handled cuts, help side and on ball defense was excellent. They are not slight of frame either. Like Barkley said, they are "grown arse men". Even their point guard is built like a power running back. We will earn the points we score.

Yep - and the Mountain West hasn't exactly looked gangbusters in the tournament so far outside of them.

They went 1-3 vs Top 50 teams in their OOC this year (beat Ohio State and lost to Arizona, Arkansas and Saint Mary's).

They went 6-3 against the top part of the MWC this year (Nevada, New Mexico, Utah State, Boise State).

Yep - grown men playing great team defense who know exactly where to hand guys off and when and where to help.

Like you said, we'll earn our points. Won't be very many broken plays.

Wow, that was quick. Makes sense though - he's been in northeastern basketball his entire career, won a ton at the D2 school he was at and did a great job in year 1 this year given what he inherited (excluding the tournament even).

Third time he's changed jobs and not had to move. FDU and Iona are only 22 miles apart.

Good for him.

Listening to The Next Round this morning and they brought up a good point. Didn’t Nate Oats come back and say that his “wrong place, wrong time” comments were a poor choice of words? If so, then that sort of changes the way Saban’s comments look.

No clue, try Reddit. The Purdue fans would love to talk about it. But we've discussed it enough in the basketball thread. There is no Saban/Oats rivalry, Saban just spoke in cliches without considering the implication (like Oats did when he made his comment), it's been beaten to death, and we are approaching the biggest weekend in our basketball program's history (or at least in most of our lifetimes).
