They made 17 3s yesterday and have killed everyone they've played.

Also, I've always thought Dan Hurley is a dick so it'd be nice to kick his arse.

I’ve seen that call multiple times and every time the referee gets it wrong. Total bullshite.

Just beat UConn, UNC, Houston, Memphis and Gonzaga and we'll be #1. It's that easy.

UConn will make you pay if you don't defend them properly. They can really shoot it once they get on a roll...now they do have a guy who's 7'2 though and he's decent as well.

Oregon was really shorthanded yesterday hence the blow out. (They Played Houston A LOT Better)

I don't think UConn has faced a team quite like us. They defended Oregon easily because Will Richardson was the only ball handler they had.

Our guards and wings have to defend and rebound.

I think it'll be competitive but if Bama defend like I know they can then...BAMA WILL NOT BE DENIED.

No. 18 Alabama Knocks Off No. 12 Michigan State in the Phil Knight Invitational

The Crimson Tide improve to 5-0 for the first time since 2017-18

The No. 18/18 Alabama men's basketball team opened up the Phil Knight Invitational with an 81-70 win over No. 12/15 Michigan State, advancing to the winner's bracket to face No. 20 UConn on Friday. Brandon Miller led the way for the Crimson Tide, scoring a game-high 24 points to go along with nine rebounds and two blocks.

The first half went back-and-forth with nine lead changes and four ties. Brandon Miller sparked Alabama's offense scoring 17 points to go along with five rebounds. The Tide got hot late in the half, shooting 48.5 percent (16-33) in the first half and capped it off with a three-pointer from Miller at the buzzer, to take a 42-37 lead at the break.

Alabama's defense was exceptional in protecting the three-point line, as the Spartans did not make a three-pointer until the 13:49-mark in the second half. Jahvon Quinerly and Alabama's bench came up clutch all throughout the second half, scoring 16 of Alabama's 39 points in the second half led by Quinerly's eight points to go along with three rebounds and a pair of assists.

Head Coach Nate Oats Postgame Comments
"That is a great win for us. They (Michigan State) easily could have been 4-0 coming into this game so I am proud of the way our guys responded. I thought we closed the first half great and had a good opening four minutes other than the two points, and then I thought we closed the first half well. I think we opened the game up well and got into their lack of depth obviously without them having a couple of guys in the rotation we were able to wear them out a little bit. Credit to them, they hit some tough three-pointers and got to the free-throw line a bunch and were able to stay in the game and make it somewhat a close game, it would be nice to close out a little bit better. It is a quality win, we are headed in the right direction."

Yeah I can’t stay up that late anymore either and I’m only 41. I recorded it and watched it this morning.

After the UConn men's basketball team hoisted up a school-record 37 3-pointers on Thursday night, hitting a school-record 17 of them, Dan Hurley was asked if he liked his team shooting so many from distance.

"I like 30, for me," Hurley replied. "I'm not Nate Oats."

Oats is the head coach of Alabama who has been on the vanguard of college basketball analytics, famously disdaining the mid-range jumper and championing 3-pointers, dunks or layups. He is also a close friend of Hurley and his family, serving as Bobby Hurley's assistant at Buffalo before taking over the head coaching reins after Hurley left for Arizona State several years ago.

On Friday, Oats and Dan Hurley will go head-to-head for the first time when the Crimson Tide face UConn in a Phil Knight Invitational semifinal game.

Hurley avoids scheduling his brother at Arizona State, or even Rhode Island, where he coached for six seasons before taking over at UConn. It's likely he's not overly excited to coach against a good friend like Oats, either.

The two remain in frequent contact. It was Oats who turned Hurley on to an analytics company called HDI Intelligence, which the staff has used as a chief recruiting tool.

The 18th-ranked Crimson Tide will be far and away UConn's toughest foe to date. Alabama handily defeated No. 12 Michigan State on Thursday night, 81-70. Brandon Miller, a 6-foot-9 freshman, dominated with four 3-pointers, a game-high 24 points and nine rebounds. He's a match-up nightmare for most teams, and UConn could be no exception. Perhaps Andre Jackson Jr., the 6-6, rangy junior wing who can be a shutdown defender, gets the Miller assignment.

Alabama only shot 23 treys in the win over Michigan State, 14 fewer than UConn in the previous game.

But then, Nate Oats is no Dan Hurley, either.

Junior guard Mark Sears averages over 15 points per game for 'Bama, and former Villanova guard Jahvon Quinerly is a familiar name. Quinerly tore his ACL last March but has returned surprisingly early and played his best game of the season (10 points, three rebounds, three assists) on Thursday night.

UConn and Alabama have met only once before, in the 2004 Elite Eight in Phoenix. The Huskies rolled to an 87-71 win behind 36 points from Ben Gordon, en route to their second national championship.

Deep Dive of Alabama's Seasons Prior to Friday's Tilt Against UConn (Stretching the Floor blog)

quote:

With only two NCAA tournament appearances in the previous thirteen seasons prior to his hiring, Nate Oats has been a slam dunk hire. Not only has the Tide made the tournament in the last two seasons, but they have become top destination for HS recruits and transfers ranking in the top-15 nationally in each of their recruiting hauls between the ‘20 and ‘23 classes.

At Alabama, Oats’ has integrated the same style of offense he was famous for at Buffalo: play fast and shoot a lot of threes.

Aside from freshman guard Jaden Bradley and sophomore big Charles Bediako, everyone else in the regular rotation let it fly from three, so expect three or four shooters on the floor at all times.

With the ability to gather the caliber of athletes Oats was unable to attract at Buffalo, Alabama isn’t just an offensive machine: according to evanmiya.com, all players aside from point guards Mark Sears and Jahvon Quinerly are plus-defenders, which makes me think this is yet another game where Tristen Newton can utilize his size, creativity and balance to attack Alabama’s PGs and take advantage of their defensive inefficiencies.

While Oregon’s bigs are more known for their offensive abilities, Alabama’s bigs are much better defensively, but lack overall heft

Brandon Miller seems to be one of those phenoms that is must see. Whether you're a BAMA fan or not.
I've been keeping up since the early 80's and I realize it's early on, but he's the best I've seen on our side.
That's up against the Spreewell's, Horry's, Hollywood Robinson, Mcdyess, Sexton etc...

I see no line on the Bama game tonight yet.
But I see where Tennessee is a 1.5 point favorite over Kansas?

I felt like you could literally see JQ gaining confidence as the night went on. First half, he was a little timid, but by the end of the game he was knocking down a three and then a nifty layup, going inside and drawing fouls, and playing some pretty good defense. I’m happy for him and I think last year was frustrating but only because we were asking him to do too much. He should thrive in this offense where he can be a major contributor but doesn’t have to be “the guy,” more like the year before last.

Did Miller say something to the effect that he heard college ball wasn't that hard?

Yes - sounded like some may have downplayed the college game to him. But he also followed up with a comment about that not being the case.

I don't think so. Sounded to me like was saying people criticized him for being skinny and not a tough player, but he is showing that he is in fact the Slim Reaper (my words, not his, but they should be his, because he is the Slim Reaper).
