Anyone else notice the Morehead St coach just staring at his player laying hurt on the court?? No one came to help him for the longest...strange

Watching it live, it seemed really odd. I think they changed the rules to where if a trainer/coach comes to check then the player has to come out. In that case, I believe the other team’s coach can choose from the other 4 players on the court as to who gets to shoot the free throws. So they may have been trying to see if he could get up on his own and not have a worse shooter at the line (although the guy that shot them made both easily). If that’s the rules, I’m not a fan at all…no reason to have a hurt player being unattended on a dead ball situation!!

Awesome game! You could tell this team was full of veteran players and hit the ground running. If they can figure out how to plug holes on defense, they could be really, really good!

I say this every year but something needs to be done about basketball reviews. It shouldn't take more than 20 seconds.

Well obviously. This is Alabama basketball. Nothing bad ever happens here.

Seriously though I still can't get over some of what Nelson can do at his size. 6'11" with the handle of a guard and the athleticism of a wing is just unfair. And he can knock down 3s. Like I understand some of the draft feedback concerns, but surely there had to be some kind of miscommunication and a bunch of teams picking mid to late first were really disappointed that he came back. Their loss is our gain, but still. That kid should be playing pro ball.

Yeah, already the first day of College Basketball coming back

Richie Riley isn't the guy for South Alabama. It was evident last year and this year.

The poster dunk he had in the second half was cool and is making the rounds everywhere, but the drive and dunk he had at the beginning of the game when we were up 3-0 was absurd.

It's crazy that he isn't in the NBA right now. My amateur scouting eyes tell me he's an easy lottery pick in the next draft. Can't believe this dude plays for Alabama.

Yep, not sure how we were able to get a robot built for what we do off the college waiver wire like that.

It felt like he could have scored 60 if he'd just isoed 50% of our possessions. Anytime he decided "ok I'm going to score this possession" he did it with absolute ease.

Here are the roles Nate Oats mentioned new assistants have primarily been focusing on:

Coach Pannone: Defense
Coach Claunch: Offense
Coach Murphy: Personnel

Oats made mention of this during his presser last night. For reference, here's how it compares to the previous staff:

Henry - defense
Pettway - offense
Hodgson - personnel

Robot is a good term.

I was thinking to myself that Wemby is the ultimate "create a player" type build you could come up with for a modern/futuristic basketball player, because that guy is truly something else. Like I don't even know how to explain him to non basketball type people.

But at the collegiate level, Grant Nelson is really about as good as you could hope to custom build a player, isn't he? Tall as hell, long as hell, super athletic, legit guard like ball handling skills, outside shot, inside shot, excellent free throw shooter, good rebounder, rim protector skills, great help defender, looked more than adequate multiple times as a one on one defender in space against smaller/quicker types.

I'm not at all comping him to Wemby or implying that he's a perfect basketball player by any means. He has some flaws like anyone else and has areas he can definitely improve. But how many guys at the college level right now would you take over him? And i'm asking that genuinely because there can't be many at all.

Agreed, and (even though it was Morehead) it's crazy to me that we took our foot off the gas halfway through the first half, at a point when we were on pace to score 160.

The team last year sort of had that vibe where they'd cruise until they felt threatened, then jet back ahead when needed. Same energy.

Louisville comes from 13 points down in the second half to upset UMBC, 94-93. Going to be another long season. They were very lucky to win at the end (UMBC missed the game tying FT to send it to OT)

outside shot

If he really can continue to shoot well from outside then all the excitement is warranted. According to Oats, he's shot close to 40% from three in live practices this fall. But, he shot something like 27% at NDSU. If he can average mid 30%s we'll be in great shape.

I'm optimistic that this is going to be the best outside shooting team Oats has had at Bama.

And the icing on the cake to all of that is that we are just about the perfect place for a player of that nature to blossom.

From my poor people seats at the game, seeing Stevenson with the headband going up and down the court made me think of Jermareo Davidson’s same demeanor out there.

My only negative from last night is that the loss of Chuck (and Clowney to an extent) defending the rim is pretty massive. They had no fear in attacking the paint.

I'm hopeful Wague, Nelson and Stevenson can provide some of that as the year goes on, but I'm not sure we've athletic enough at guard to keep guys out of the paint nor do we have erasers back behind. Morehead ran some nice pick and pop stuff, but we also seemed to struggle to defend it. I imagine that will take some time and experience together as a group to figure out (last year was similar).

Though Cosby and Wrightsell showed some nice defensive athleticism.
