Boz, I keep hearing about a fight at the end of the scrimmage. Did you see it?

People keep saying we’re loaded on the DL and pass rusher but I haven’t heard much from the group during scrimmages

I think we are. There probably isn't a Williams, Allen, or Dareus- but those guys are few and far between anywhere. I think what we do have is about 7 or 8 B-B+ players on the defensive line and I think we've got players that really fit the scheme. The group may be absent a top 10 pick, but if you have 7 3rd-5th round picks you are going to be a problem up front.

DE-Latham
NT-Keenan
DT-Oatis

DE-Overton
NT-T.Smith
DT-J.Smith

If you'd asked he 4 months ago which group would be the "first team" I'd have a hard time answering, that's a good problem to have on the defensive line

I've seen Overton's name a lot in camp- and it shouldn't be forgotten that he was the #1 player in his class before reclassifying, and he was playing out of position at TAMU. He's back at his natural spot at his natural playing weight, he could be that elite guy we've missed up front, but with or without that I think we are deep with high level players.

I think the thought process at edge is that between Robinson, Koht, Russaw, Pierre, it's more likely than not that at least one of them is a stud. Probably won't be a duo like we're used to since Anderson/Turner and Turner/Braswell but there's been a lot of praise in Russaw's direction in fall camp, he could be that guy.

Keep in mind as well that Wommack's scheme isn't just reliant on the edge rush to effect the quarterback, we will see a lot more blitzing from the inside linebackers and the nickel position this season than we're accustomed to

Fights happen all the time in competitive sports. We just don't hear about them. These guys are fired up.

agree - I think we should be pretty good on DL this year, looking fwd to seeing them play.
But man, watching that group from 13-15ish (Allen, Robinson, etc) was fun! Al’shawn was a full grown man. Weren’t many yards on the ground against that D.

It should also not be forgotten that on paper we will have one of the top offensive lines in the country. Proctor, Booker, Brailsford, Roberts is a lot of beef. LSU is probably the only line on our schedule that could be consider their equals man for man. We whipped Georgia up front 9 months ago. The guys on the defensive front are facing a tougher battle Monday-Thursday than they'll see on Saturdays

100% correct. Should make for an interesting year. Bama will be hard to predict for the first half of the year.

Alabama is going to be very deep up front. I also think that the scheme change up front will allow our players to be freed up more to be more disruptive. Also have several experienced players like Keenan, Oatis, Latham, Overton, Tim Smith and Payne. James Smith and even Jeremiah Beaman could be factors, too.

Jimmy Stein at BOL said James Smith started out with the 1s in the second scrimmage.

I’ve also got high hopes for beaman in the future. Kid is a freak.

Beaman is already close to 300 pounds. He’s disruptive and hasn’t reached his ceiling yet. Really have high expectations for James Smith and Qua Russaw this year.

Looking at Western Kentucky's football page. Will Friend is the offensive coordinator.

Former Auburn Qb TJ Finely is the QB and is on the Maxwell award, Davey O'Brian, Walter Camp POTY, and Golden arm preseason watch list.

Former Missouri running back Elijah Young has been named a preseason candidate for the 2024 Doak Walker Award.

Wide receiver Easton Messer was named to the preseason watch list for the 2024 Paul Hornung Award.

Wide receiver Dalvin Smith was included on the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy

Defensive back Anthony Johnson Jr. was named to the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award Preseason Watch List.

Offensive lineman Quantavious Leslie was included on the preseason watch list for the 2024 Outland Trophy.

Kicker Lucas Carneiro is the 2024 CUSA Preseason Special Teams Player of the Year.

Former Auburn and LSU receiver Koy Moore just joined the team

Western Kentucky's coach has done a good job. Beat Wommack in a bowl game during a rebuild year and Wommacks 2nd year at South Alabama 44-23. His Qb led the nation in passing that year. Defense led the nation in forced turnovers.

Took care of South Florida last year 41-24.

quote:

Tyson Helton was named Western Kentucky University’s 21st head football coach on November 27, 2018. The 2024 campaign will mark his sixth season at the helm of the Hilltopper program after producing a 40-26 mark (including 28-11 in CUSA play) and reaching five bowl games in his first five years, with victories in four of those bowl games.

Helton led his team to an 8-5 record and a fifth consecutive bowl game during the 2023 season. WKU became one of one of only 16 teams to play in a bowl game each of the last five seasons, and became one of only seven programs to win a bowl game in each of the last three years when Helton’s Hilltoppers rallied from a 28-0 deficit to defeat Old Dominion 38-35 in overtime in the Famous Toastery Bowl. The win marked the fourth-largest comeback ever in a bowl game.

Helton’s program faced a lot of uncertainty heading into the 2022 campaign after losing record-setting quarterback Bailey Zappe along with both coordinators, but Helton added the right pieces to put the Hilltoppers back together and produced another 9-5 season. Transfer quarterback Austin Reed led the nation in passing yards offensively while Helton’s defense led college football in forced turnovers. The team’s success throughout the regular season culminated in an appearance at the 2022 R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl where the Tops defeated a 10-win South Alabama team, 44-23.
