Denton’s Ninth-Inning Single Leads Baseball to 8-7 Win over No. 9 Florida
The Crimson Tide battled for two in the ninth, highlighted by Denton’s game-winning single
Alabama baseball battled all afternoon in a back-and-forth contest with ninth-ranked Florida, eventually coming out on top 8-7 thanks to Zane Denton's game-winning RBI-single. The win improves the Crimson Tide to 13-8 on the season and 1-2 in Southeastern Conference play.
Alabama and Florida traded blows all day for a third consecutive game. Things were knotted up at four apiece after four full, with the Tide gaining a 5-4 advantage in the fifth thanks to Denton's first RBI-single of the day. The Gators pulled back in front in the eighth with a three-spot, but the Tide was able to cut the lead to one thanks to a solo homer from Denton in the home half. The ninth saw UA cross a pair for the win on getaway day.
The Tide's ninth-inning rally started with a one-out hit-by-pitch for Andrew Pinckney. Bryce Eblin followed with a single to put runners on the corners for Jim Jarvis. The Tide shortstop was able to get a bunt down on the third base line that stayed fair and allowed Pinckney to score to tie the ballgame. A single from Dominic Tamez then loaded them up for Denton, who was able to single through the right side of a five-man infield to plate the game-winner.
Denton led the Tide offense with a 3-for-5 day that included a home run, one run scored and a team-high three RBI. Owen Diodati contributed two RBI for Alabama, finishing his day 2-for-3 with a home run, a pair of runs and one walk.
Alabama reliever Jacob McNairy (4-0) picked up the win with 1.2 innings of one-run baseball to keep the Tide within striking distance. Florida reliever Blake Purnell (2-1) suffered the loss, allowing two runs on four hits in 0.1 an inning.
From Head Coach Brad Bohannon
"This was just an overall great win today for our team on so many levels, and it's kind of ironic that it happened on a day where we made a lot of mistakes. We made three errors in the infield and we certainly weren't perfect, but we were down three times – we were down a lot this weekend – and I just can't say enough about our kids and the way they just continue to fight back. Every coach preaches don't play to the scoreboard, and I think our kids absolutely did that for an entire weekend. We learned a lot, too. When we play really good baseball, we can play with anybody. A lot of credit to Florida, as well. They're one of the top five or 10 teams in the country for sure."

Yeah I said earlier I was going to wait until after this series to see the direction we are heading. Doesn’t look like I will even make it past the 5th inning to give up
Surprisingly I held off on my judgement even though I wanted to throw in the towel on Friday. Unfortunately my concerns over this program didn't really change over the weekend even with the miraculous comeback win yesterday. For this weekend I was looking for us to win AT LEAST 1 game in the series and for our hitting to take the next step and for our pitching to just hold them off on big hits. We took care of 1 of those. Our pitching was basically a home run derby for the Gators ( I shudder to think what Tennessee can do against these pitchers), our offense produced hits but besides Sunday they aren't clutch and we still can't figure out how to get timely hits with RISP and the baserunning errors shouldn't be happening at this level.
I love coach Bo as a person. He seems to be a players coach and does a great job recruiting and knowing how difficult that is here I commend him on a great job. I have concerns that sneaking into the tourney as a 3 seed is going to be our highest point with him though. This team is full of veteran players and they still haven't developed like they should since they were freshmen. His hiring of hitting coaches is abysmal. It should be really telling that Seidl, the transfer from Harvard, is one of our best hitters. It also seems like we can't get a consistent flow of strong suits from year to year. One year pitching is good, but hitting is terrible. The next year, pitching is awful and the hitting is respectable but not elite or even very good.
Things can still turn around for this season, and I really hope it does for Bo's sake, but we are going to lose a ton of players after this season and the above concerns about not being able to develop players can make next season a potential disaster. At this point it's hard to watch the Ole Miss, Miss State, and Southern Miss's of the world and how they have better positioned themselves by offering in-state tuition/scholarship deals while we just sit here on our hands hoping for a lottery that will probably never happen in this state. I believe this is why nobody can truly get excited for college baseball here. Yes, we have some great die hard fans that have been around the program forever but so many younger generation of fans just see the program as what it is, a program on life support.

I agree with you to an extent. People who try to downplay the no lottery scholarships situation with "look at the Mississippi schools!" apparently don't realize that the criteria for getting in-state tuition as an out of state student at OM or State are a pulse, a high school diploma, and the ability to fill out your application with 3 spelling errors or less. However, Alabama is never going to do this in the current climate. The Mississippi schools do it because they have to to keep their attendance numbers up. Alabama's attendance has skyrocketed because of out of state kids who are willing to pay full price. The university isn't going to willingly give up all that money just to help out a non-revenue sports program. So realistically the lottery is the only way the scholarship situation is going to be fixed.

They couldn’t allow this for 15-20 baseball players ?

If I recall correctly, it can’t just apply to athletes - it would have to be a university level exception that applied to all students who fit whatever criteria the university set forth to waive out of state tuition.

Yep - that's the problem. When you don't use athletic scholarships, you have to abide by the same criteria as everyone else in the student body. Exceptions aren't allowed because the kids technically aren't coming as "baseball players" they are coming, in the technical view of student aid, as students.
It's the same as Division III, really, which I had experience with my freshman year. Division III schools that are serious about sports find ways around that, though. They also have a lot more leeway to do so because they are almost all private schools.

I knew they were strict on students bc my oldest and youngest daughter now got out of state waived bc we live in Lowndes Co. Miss, which borders Alabama but my son in law did not . I just thought that since a baseball player signs a scholarship it would/ could be waived but I guess not . Somebody needs to get creative over there

That's where you get into relationships between the admissions folks and athletic department and their willingness to "work together"

Despite some frustrating losses I do think the team is different. After having a chance and not capitalizing on it Friday night, and getting bombed Saturday, they battled back several times Sunday only to fall behind again. But they kept fighting and ultimately won when they could have easily thrown in the towel and chalked it up as another L.
1-2 vs 0-3 and winning the last one in such an exciting manner could provide some much needed momentum going into the next series. Do I have concerns? Absolutely. Time will tell but with 27 conference games left, I’m going to remain team ‘cautiously posi-Bammer.’ If the team can get to Hoover and to a regional, I’ll consider this season a success.
Not that it matters for Bama, but look at some of the SEC scores this past weekend:
Ole Miss 13 auburn 6
auburn 19 Ole Miss 5
Ole Miss 15 auburn 2
Georgia 11 Miss St 0
Georgia 12 Miss st 11
Miss st 20 Georgia 3
Texas a$m 11 LSU 7
Tenn 10 USC 0
Vandy 15 Missou 2
What’s up with SEC pitching so far this year?

Fitt: Resilient Alabama Looks Like Factor In SEC
COLUMNS Aaron Fitt - March 21, 2022
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — It felt like Alabama was playing catchup all weekend long. The Crimson Tide nearly came back from a late 6-0 deficit against Florida on Friday night, then overcame an early 3-0 hole to tie Saturday’s game in the middle innings, only to come up short in both contests. On Sunday, after twice erasing two-run deficits in the first four innings, the Tide finally took its first lead of the weekend in the fifth inning, then handed the game over to its top two bullpen arms.
