Here's my thing. The regular season matters in this sport. In the NFL the Giants can lose 7 or 8 games in the regular season and put together a Cinderella run to be champions. That's nice and all, but I don't personally want to see it in college football. I like the idea that every year the champion is either the best team or one of the best. That doesn't mean we don't have to play the games. We never would've known that Georgia was one of the four best teams if we hadn't played the games, for example.

So, with every week being crucial in CFB it makes it more exciting. If my division/conference sucks and I can win it with 4 or 5 wins by getting lucky in just a couple of games then the regular season is less exciting. Upsets in CFB are HUGE, because it has HUGE ramifications. An embarrassing loss to a bad team could kill your chances at the title, see Ohio State. With any sort of Automatic Qualifier it doesn't matter, just win certain games and you're in.

I think 4 is just fine. MAYBE we could go to 6 or 8, but really I think that'd still arguably be too much. The only think I like about going to 8 is...

quote:

- Holy shite the high stakes matchups in on-campus stadiums in December. Alabama hosting Ohio State to go to a Final Four game. Oklahoma hosting Auburn. Clemson hosting USC. UCF getting their shot at Ohio State. USC going to Penn State.

THIS would be cool because of how meaningful it would be, but I don't know if that excitement outweighs other factors for me like preserving the regular season and making sure the champion is one of the best teams.

As for smaller schools getting a chance at the title, I said a year or two ago on the MSB that I think the G5 should have their own playoff. Someone recently did a mock bracket of such a series of games and it looked really exciting. Maybe even institute a thing where the reigning G5 and reigning P5 champs open their next seasons against each other.

You don't know that

Baseball is a bit different sport. I don't know enough about the difference between the top and bottom of the Premier League to know how likely certain wins/losses are.

The thing with being #16 (as a team like Troy/FAU) isn't that you couldn't win once, or maybe even twice. You'd literally have to beat, on the road, #1 and #8, then beat #4 and #2. Sure, it's possible, but it would literally be the most improbable run in American sports history. More so than the Miracle on Ice IMHO.

Agreed, and the idea that someone would be against even allowing it seems selfish

Also, I don't understand the logic in trying to change it to be like the other sports and changing one of the things that makes it different and special.

The money issue would be the death of this idea. Giving up 3 games when most athletic departments lose money anyway from the biggest moneymaker is a nonstarter.

One person's different and special, is another person's stupid and illogical

Right, but if you think having the regular season and wins vs. losses being very, very important is stupid and illogical (what makes CFB special and different) then you probably don't have CFB as your favorite sport - which is what i was trying to get at but thought I had explained it more than I did.

lol, possibly. Meh, College Football is the greatest show on earth because of the tradition, pageantry, lack of spoiled political millionaires... mixed with the greatest sport ever created. The insane season structure is the lone stain.
