What position does he play in DeBoer's 4-2-5? Is there an equivalent of a Star?

If we want him to be successful, he needs to be given the ability to make whatever decision he thinks is best. Too much meddling is what put us in the position we were in pre Saban

You mean to tell me that hiring guys on the basis that they'd do it Bear's way didn't work out well for us?

I mean I understand that it has been 17 years since we have experienced any of this so people are freaking out a bit, but telling the new coach how he has to run his program is the last thing you want to do. If he is your guy and you are confident in the hire you have to let him do things his way for better or worse.

If his staff really is coming and has been with him for a while, good news is we probably won’t have to deal with replacing 3-4 assistants every year

Y’all want continuity lol

T-Rob was in no position to demand anything. If true, and I were DeBoer, I would wish him well at his new place of employment. The program has to reflect the coach’s personality. He’s the boss (good or bad). The quick decision on T-Rob’s part makes me think that he was inclined to leave anyway. As an aside, don’t revise history to make it seem like we had an ‘11 or ‘12 defense last year with both Steele and T-Rob.

I think TRob was in the "DC or bust" phase of his career. If Saban didn't retire, I thought he'd leave if he wasn't elevated to DC.

Honestly, I only wanted one year of continuity on the defensive side. Retain the coaches you can to keep (most of) the roster intact and then after a year, guys either warm up to you and your system or they want to bolt. I can appreciate a new coach wanting to bring in his own guys, but TRob seemed like the ONE dude you'd want to keep (for at least a year). I also thnk Jeff Allen is an integral guy to retain, but I appreciate he's not an actual coach.

I mean it’s less than 24 hours after the man was hired and TRob already had an offer on the table from Georgia. Since we’re dealing in hypotheticals, how do we know TRob didn’t say “DC or I’m out”? How would you have handled that situation before you’ve even had your introductory presser.l?

Right, TRob probably already had something in the works with Kirby. If true that TRob demanded an answer last night…what was dude thinking?

Yeah, I’m inclined to believe TRob was already on his way out regardless.

I think that's 100% what the situation was.

I’m sure local stations out of Birmingham will all carry it. Alabama will also stream it.

I read your post as blaming Deboer for not keeping him around. Not just lamenting the fact that he left. My bad

Yep. Downside is that staff continuity can go from good and consistent to lazy BBQ buddies in a hurry, but the bottom line is that we're paying this man to be Kalen DeBoer, not a younger Saban. Let him be who he is and run shite the way he wants to. If it doesn't work, then we have to try again in a few years. You know what will definitely make it not work though? Telling him who he has to retain, who he has to hire, how he has to run practice, the style of defense he needs to play, etc.

We have to adjust the lens through which we are viewing football. We are viewing it as if Saban was still here. Now a new coach, who is legit in his own right, changed the landscape. So a move by a player or position coach that would matter if Saban was still here matters differently in the new landscape.

The king is dead.
Long live the king.
