Alabama releases Crimson, White rosters for 2019 A-Day Game BamaOnLine - By Charlie Potter

quote:

Alabama’s annual Golden Flake A-Day Game is only one day away, and the two teams that will compete in the public scrimmage -- or the 15th and final practice of the spring season -- are now set.

“The format that we have in the A-Day Game is to make it as much like a real game as we can,” head coach Nick Saban said. “The first offense will go against the first defense so that means that the first offense is the Crimson team. The first defense is on the White team. The first offense has the second defense on their team. The first defense has the second offense on their team so they're playing against each other.

“We play for steak and beans. The winning team gets flowers on the table and waited on. The losing team gets paper plates and one pot of baked beans. As much as I like baked beans, being the commissioner, I usually eat with the winning team. Just to set a good example.”

Rising junior quarterback Tua Tagovailoa will lead the Crimson team against rising redshirt sophomore Mac Jones and the White team on Saturday, April 3. Tagovailoa will face Dylan Moses and the first-team defense, while Jones will face Alabama’s second-team defense in Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Below is a full breakdown of the Crimson Tide’s two A-Day Game rosters.

Tua was on Finebaum today

"I think for me, it would've been best if we would've lost AT LEAST 1 game maybe towards the 2nd half of the season. So we all came to the realization that the little things do matter." @Tuaamann on what happened in the CFP title game vs Clemson.

You could tell the team had this cocky thing about them. Not saying they should have they were playing great. I wish we could change that game but it humbled the shite out of them.

Looking back to end of last season, I was cocky too. I had convinced myself that (healthy) Tua could make no mistakes.

Our second team offense is likely way ahead of our second team defense - second offense has some nice skill guys, and a few dudes on that Oline. The rules of Aday also help young QBs. That Crimson defense looks suspect, especially at LB.

The White squad is going in dry, son. Straight in, no kissing.

DJ Dale

Kid is a junk yard dog. Look how thick he is in his lower half compared to the other guys on the DL in some of those videos. Beast. Hell he played some running back in some of his high school highlights.

I know they were going to reschedule because of the bad weather forecasted for tomorrow... but have been doing family stuff and not able to watch anything on the tv.

Here’s a look at how to watch Friday’s annual Sooners game.

When: Tonight at 7:30 p.m. CT

TV: FOX Sports Oklahoma Plus and FOX College Sports (national)

Online: FOX Sports GO and SoonerSports.tv

Radio: 107.7 The Franchise KRXO-FM

A SoonerSports broadcast team will be calling the action on the TV side. As for the radio call, as always Voice of the Sooners Toby Rowland will be bringing it to you.

What we'll be watching during Alabama's 2019 A-Day BamaOnLine - Game By Charlie Potter ...Continued...

With nearly every player on Alabama’s current roster seeing the field Saturday during the 2019 A-Day Game, it will be difficult to keep up with every person that enters the game. So, we narrowed the list to position groups to target, as well as players within those groups to keep an eye on.
Backup quarterback

Tua Tagovailoa is healthy and will participate in this year’s A-Day Game (Saturday at 1 p.m. CT) as the Crimson Tide’s starting quarterback. But with Jalen Hurts no longer in town, Alabama’s backup quarterback role is up for grabs. Redshirt sophomore Mac Jones has worked primarily with the second-team offense this spring, while freshman Taulia Tagovailoa has received some reps with the twos, as well. Another true freshman, Paul Tyson, is also in the mix. Saturday will provide a chance to see Jones run the second team and Taulia and Tyson for the first time.

Inside linebacker

Much like the quarterback of the offense, the quarterback of the defense is settled. Junior Dylan Moses has stepped up as a leader this spring and will command the defense this fall. But Moses can’t play both Mike and Will positions at the same time (at least, I don’t think he can). Therefore Alabama needs another player to step up. Redshirt senior Joshua McMillon is the leader in the competition right now and will play on the first-team defense with Moses, but the Tide needs its young players -- Markail Benton, Ale Kaho, Jaylen Moody and Shane Lee -- to step up, as well.

Defensive line

Nick Saban wasn’t pleased with the depth at inside linebacker or along the defensive line after the first scrimmage of the spring. After those comments, we saw a change for the defensive line with true freshman DJ Dale receiving reps at nose tackle with the first team between Raekwon Davis and LaBryan Ray. We’ll get our first look at Dale in a game-like setting Saturday. And it will also allow us to see how players like Phidarian Mathis, Stephon Wynn, Tevita Musika and Christian Barmore have come along, as well as newcomers Antonio Alfano and Justin Eboigbe.

Offensive line

Right tackle Jedrick Wills (ankle) won’t play in the A-Day Game, so Alabama will have several new faces -- some experienced and some not -- making up its first-team offensive line. Alex Leatherwood has moved back to left tackle, Chris Owens and Emil Ekiyor have made strides at center and left guard and Matt Womack has manned both right guard and right tackle. It will be interesting to see the first unit, especially if Womack can’t go. All of Alabama’s offensive line signees will also participate in their first A-Day Game, including 5-star behemoth Evan Neal.

Spring experiments

It’s common to see players out of position in the springtime, experimenting in case they are later needed in the fall. But they usually only last a handful of practices. The two experiments this year, however, have lasted the duration of the spring in outside linebacker Cameron Latu at tight end and wide receiver Chadarius Townsend at running back. Townsend is a versatile athlete that has spent time at receiver and cornerback in the past and is likely to move again once help arrives. But Latu has had a strong spring at tight end and might have found himself a new home.

Kicking game

Of course this was going to make the list. Alabama wasn’t great kicking or punting the football in 2018, and three of the four specialists from a year ago are back in kicker Joseph Bulovas and punters Skyler DeLong and Mike Bernier. The latter entered the NCAA transfer portal but is still practicing with the team. Added to the mix is Hoover (Ala). High School kicker Will Reichard, who has kicked and punted this spring. Can the true freshman challenge the returning players for their spots on special teams? Or have Bulovas, DeLong and Bernier shown improvement?

New faces

We’ve already mentioned players like Dale, Lee, Neal and Reichard, but they are just four of the 15 early enrollees that will wear an Alabama uniform for the first time Saturday. Other than Dale and Lee, several other young players have generated some buzz this spring, including wide receiver John Metchie, who hauled in a few touchdowns in the two scrimmages. The new players aren’t alone, though, as seven new coaches will make their debuts in the A-Day Game. Steve Sarkisian will coach the Crimson team while Pete Golding leads the White team.
