With nearly every player on Alabama’s current roster seeing the field Saturday during the 2019 A-Day Game, it will be difficult to keep up with every person that enters the game. So, we narrowed the list to position groups to target, as well as players within those groups to keep an eye on.
Backup quarterback

Tua Tagovailoa is healthy and will participate in this year’s A-Day Game (Saturday at 1 p.m. CT) as the Crimson Tide’s starting quarterback. But with Jalen Hurts no longer in town, Alabama’s backup quarterback role is up for grabs. Redshirt sophomore Mac Jones has worked primarily with the second-team offense this spring, while freshman Taulia Tagovailoa has received some reps with the twos, as well. Another true freshman, Paul Tyson, is also in the mix. Saturday will provide a chance to see Jones run the second team and Taulia and Tyson for the first time.

Defensive line

Nick Saban wasn’t pleased with the depth at inside linebacker or along the defensive line after the first scrimmage of the spring. After those comments, we saw a change for the defensive line with true freshman DJ Dale receiving reps at nose tackle with the first team between Raekwon Davis and LaBryan Ray. We’ll get our first look at Dale in a game-like setting Saturday. And it will also allow us to see how players like Phidarian Mathis, Stephon Wynn, Tevita Musika and Christian Barmore have come along, as well as newcomers Antonio Alfano and Justin Eboigbe.

Spring experiments

It’s common to see players out of position in the springtime, experimenting in case they are later needed in the fall. But they usually only last a handful of practices. The two experiments this year, however, have lasted the duration of the spring in outside linebacker Cameron Latu at tight end and wide receiver Chadarius Townsend at running back. Townsend is a versatile athlete that has spent time at receiver and cornerback in the past and is likely to move again once help arrives. But Latu has had a strong spring at tight end and might have found himself a new home.

New faces

We’ve already mentioned players like Dale, Lee, Neal and Reichard, but they are just four of the 15 early enrollees that will wear an Alabama uniform for the first time Saturday. Other than Dale and Lee, several other young players have generated some buzz this spring, including wide receiver John Metchie, who hauled in a few touchdowns in the two scrimmages. The new players aren’t alone, though, as seven new coaches will make their debuts in the A-Day Game. Steve Sarkisian will coach the Crimson team while Pete Golding leads the White team.
