The scuttlebutt I've heard that the creation of the University of Alabama System and the autonomous Birmingham campus was partly due to some in Montgomery not being happy with UA administration not gleefully supporting the segregation dog and pony show from George Wallace.

I don't know what truth there is to that but I've heard several old heads from Birmingham and Tuscaloosa say it.

because Villanova, UCLA and Virginia Tech had just cut their programs.

Only ucla, and only the men's team. The other 5 teams still exist. I could name you friends on all these teams late 90s to early y2ks.

I know that Michigan State, Arizona State, Iowa, Dartmouth, East Carolina and UConn just recently cancelled their programs as well.

Arizona state hasn't cut swimming either. They're 2 years removed from a nattie Neither has Dartmouth. Uconn only the men. Most of the programs that actually were cut were 6 years ago, during 'rona.

Looks both of these were indeed reinstated, ASU was cut and brought from fan support. Dartmouth was brought back after some sort of law suit resolution a couple years ago. I mainly got all these schools simply from a list of cancelled programs. That lsit didn't mention and reinstatements. Obviously I'm not a close follower of college swimming.

Maybe the couple of guys I knew had "been cut" from those teams It was nearly 30 years ago now, memory is getting a little fuzzy.

I still find it shocking that UCLA doesn't have a mens swimming team. They have so many sports and Southern California seems like it would be a swimming hotbed.

It makes 0 sense to me as well. They went from a team with an early 80s natty and pretty much a perennial top 10 to gone by 94 or 95.

is it pool facility and maintenance, team size or something else that makes it a challenge to operate? My guess is the scholarships and travel expenses would be the primary expenses. Moar can probably contribute a more educated perspective as to where the costs come in by having these programs.

Cost of pool facility renovations and maintenance is the issue, 100%

I would think location had a big part in Bham Southern's closure.
Not really.

It was a combination of the same factors that are working against all small-enrollment liberal arts heavy schools and massive financial mismanagement.

Poor Montevallo will probably also close its doors sometime in the next twenty years.

It certainly don’t help enrollment when things got tighter. In the end, our shitty state treasurer cited the collateral for why he went against the legislature and turned down the loan.

shite, i missed this... it's not the scholarship count, as men were 9.9 and women at 14, when these numbers mattered. We traveled by bus pretty much everywhere. Facilities... be it building new ones, maintaining them, or insurance + lifeguard and other pool related staffing. When there's little to 0 money being made, the debt stacks. Be it our school, a neighborhood/community pool, or a private backyard pool... they're all financial boondoggles

Alot of schools will, including HBCUs. Trump giving HBCUs a payday was just dumb but expected.

lost in the shuffle.... 16 minor tracks cut is pretty academically horrific for a small college. This is emergency level cuts, it must be really bad.

I still can't get over how tiny Talladega College thought starting a gymnastics team, one of the highest cost sports in terms of equipment and insurance, was any sort of a long term good idea.

Like I posted earlier, so many schools are absolutely bloated with bureaucracy. Seems to me if they want to save money, they could and should abolish a fair amount of those made up positions.

I think the days of small private schools are numbered. Well at least in small states like this one. Perhaps a school like Berry College can flourish by getting the output of granola crunch home schooling moms out of the Atlanta suburbs.

Administrators at all levels of our education system in this country are the focus. The teachers, professors, and students are an afterthought.

Montevallo is just another example of an educational institution that is a make-work program for bureaucrats that just happens to hire the occasional teacher and tolerates having students around as long as they get paid.

That's being generous. Negative publicity like cutting sports and academic programs isn't going to be great for student recruiting and enrollment.

It amazes me how these schools all of a sudden realize they're financially in trouble. Terrible management and leadership.

Same as any other person or entity:
