So why was it only 10-10 at the half against The Citadel?

I was gone all this past week and was unable to watch the game or keep up with what was going on due to where I was and what I was doing. Why was the game tied at the break? Was it sloppy play from Alabama, The Citadel playing keep away with their triple option offense, or a little bit of both?

Both. They kept the ball for 7 minutes on first drive. Offense played good just didn’t get ball much . Couple blown assignments on pitch man. Just lethargic

This. Once we got used to their offense in the 2nd quarter the game was over.

People act like it's the first time a cupcake was semi-competitive for a period of time against a playoff contender. We struggled for a half against Chattanooga in 2016. Auburn struggled for a half against ULM last year. It happens.

True. But that 2016 UT-Chattanooga game was a harbinger of things to come. The offense never was quite the same, the Iron Bowl excluded.

Looking at the stat sheet though, it seems like we made plenty of explosive plays when we had the football this past Saturday. And Tua looked like his old self again so this is good.

(1) It took us a while to adjust defensively. Becuase of that, they were able to 2017 Mississippi State us - 3 yard run, 4 yard run, 3 yard run, 5 yard run. This led to them controlling the clock. They broke 1 long run and we gave them a FG with a dumb personal foul penalty and wallah, they had 10 points. That meant we didn't get many possession on offense..........

(2).........and our offensive possession, sans 1, moved the ball at ease. However, 1 bogged down in the red zone and led to a field goal and 1 was ended on a fumble. So, just like that, the half was over and we only had 10 points.

The 2nd half we stopped letting them bleed 3-4 first downs a drive and basically kept playing the same on offense (and scored TDs every drive). We never struggled on offense outside of one 3 and out. Every other drive we were moving right down the field. And the defense wasn't getting gashed for big plays (sans the 2 TDs), the 1st half Citadel just kept eaking out 1st downs and having every series have multiple 3rd down conversions.

Honestly, it was irritating, and when we fumbled the opening kickoff of the 2nd half I got a little squeamish, but nothing to worry about long term.

I had zero concern at all until that. Then it started feeling weird and I didn't like it.

because we only had 4 possessions the entire half and we fumbled on one of them. Citidel had one drive that was 12 plays long, ate up 7 minutes of clock, and went 35 yards.

Man, that is impressive

This game also puts in perspective how the Oklahoma/Army game went the way it went.

The Wishbone is hard to defend, especially when you never see it, and a beautiful thing to watch when run successfully. On their first TD, the QB read it perfectly, froze Smith, flipped a perfect pitch and the RB got around the edge and was gone.

Bama finally adjusted and talent took over, but I was reminded of and posted Stallings quote: “If you think there is such a thing as an unimportant game, try losing one.”

I remember looking at my phone in the 2nd quarter. And it might have even been at the VERY end of the 2nd quarter. And Alabama had only run 19 plays on offense.

Yeah, we're used to big plays and quick scores but have a drive or 2 fizzle out or have a turnover and you just aren't scoring many points in 19 plays.

ETA: Alabama ran 23 plays on offense in the 1st half and that's counting holds and penalties. So probably not even 20 clean plays.

I alluded to this during the game thread, but this whole thing was my fault. I skipped EVERY single pregame superstition because I did not respect The Citadel at all. I corrected myself during halftime. I won't let it happen again.

They absolutely chewed up the clock.

It was the shortest first half I've ever seen. Both teams got like 3-4 possessions. And we fumbled one of them away.

That was the biggest reason it was 10-10 at halftime.

Once we began stopping them 3 and out, they didn't eat up clock and we poured it on in the 2nd half.

At halftime I was legit worried we'd win something like 24-10 just because of how few possessions we were getting.

I think all of our asses were puckered up watching that fumble. It was like, damn it looks like it is our destiny to lose this game. The tiger rant was half "celebration" and half "bitching because they couldn't score like the citadel did". I seriously think we should avoid cut blocking teams at all cost in the future and I think we will.

I never thought we were going to lose, but after that fumble I definitely foresaw a 27-13 or 30-13 type final score.

A real fan would've watched the replay instead of asking a group of strangers

Bama has a habit of playing up or down to the level of its competition.
