That was absolutely the biggest issue. The run defense went from #4 nationally in 2021 to #36 nationally in 2022. There was a lot of experience back, but Phil Mathis graduating and Justin Eboigbe injured became losses that seemingly could not be overcome.

Give that AVERAGE interior defense to Jeremy "Chick-fil-A Bag " Pruitt and watch what happens.

Was he the DC?

I don't think so...

would add to your point that not everyone has positive memories of their alma mater - all kinds of things can happen in your life that make your college experience different than the "best years of your life" stereotype. Not everyone gets to spend their college years having fun. I don't look back on my time as a student at UA with any nostalgia at all and I have much worse things to say about my time as an employee there. If Bama has an inroad with Schumann, it's because of his relationship with Saban, not because he went to UA back in the day.

It is tough if you're not Greek. But, over time, my memories have gotten fonder.

Even a great DC needs the Jimmy and Joe's to be elite

Dammit when is something official going to get announced?! This is like signing day but stretched over weeks. So important too because if Bama gets the DC right they are an immediate title contender again.

I also think that a big part of that was ILB play.

True, but a bonehead DC like Pete can even screw up elite Jimmies & Joes. For example, Pete sliding Will Anderson inside to get him double teamed instead of rushing out on the edge where he's dang near unblockable.

I don’t normally criticize bad coaching only because of the fact I wouldn’t know the first damn thing about it, but the Tenn, LSU and Aub game’s really marked the end for Golding. He just never seemed to figure out how to stop it or slow it down.

He’s gone now, but he did do well in recruiting for Bama so that’s one bright area for him.

Other than Will who would you say was/is great on that defense?

Great is used way too often instead of good.

True and no one can convince me that all the evals for the guys we've recruited over the past few years are that far off.

We had the players. We didn't have the coach.

Will Anderson
Byron Young
Brian Branch
Kool-Aid McKinstry

Those guys were very, very good college defensive players last year.

Most of them, but Pete's shitty schemes, play calling and failure to make good adjustments stifled their performance. You seem to fully blame the players, concluding they're merely 'average.' You seem to enjoy bashing players.

Then take a look at the 2016 roster on defense and it is CLEAR the 2022 bunch is not even close in talent.

a 10 vs a 6

Agree - we have positions where we have "solid" players but not elite players, and the NFL draft will show that (ILB, S, DT). Battle, Hellams, HTT were good college players, but they weren't Top 50 NFL Draft guys like we used to have up the middle.

Like others have said, this unit probably got over hyped due to star power, but on the flip side the way we continued to get ripped apart by the same plays against Auburn and Tennessee with no adjustment is what was the end for Golding IMHO. The way we were abused over and over by those 2 teams was flat out embarrassing.

You seem to be assuming/concluding the difference in 2016 vs 2022 performance is mainly due to player talent level. We also had a way better DC in 2016 vs '22 -- a 10 vs a 6.

I agree a different DC does better work, but he is also right about personel.

Dale, Battle, Hellams and HTT are not in the same category as Daron Payne, Reuben Foster, Eddie Jackson and Ronnie Harrison.
