Nick Saban is going to give Jalen Milroe a fair opportunity and I think we all know this.

Ty Simpson might be the better backup quarterback right now but Saban will give Milroe his fair shake.

I just hope if Bryce does play, that UT players don’t try to knock him out and reinjure his shoulder.
It’s too bad that this week hadn’t been a bye week to give Bryce an additional week to recover if he needed it.

We screwed. It was a great run. LOL!!

I'm kidding of course. We'll figure it out. It is what it is...

If Young doesn't play then we'll deal with it. I just can't believe at the low quality backup QBs we have. What did the coaches think we were gonna do if Young got hurt. And what can they be thinking for next year at the QB position? Saban has GOT to get a new OC.

We live in the transfer portal era.

Bryce was the #1 player overall coming out of high school. No game ready QB was going to follow him in the next class.

If you recall we initially had a commitment from Drake Maye, the starting QB at North Carolina, but he jumped ship. We had to take a project in Milroe. Simpson has the tools to be elite, but he is a true freshman. No portal QB is going to potentially waste a year of eligibility to come be a backup either.

There's a reason we are taking two QBs this year. Odds are the loser of the Milroe-Simspon battle is going to bolt leaving us with zero depth.

The days of starting caliber QBs waiting 3 years for an opportunity are over. Hell, Tua has admitted he was all but gone before being called into action in the 2017 title game.

It's not really an injury that's going to be affected by much except falling on it in the same weird way.

I wouldn't be shocked if our current situation plays out like it did in 2009.

Star Jackson was officially the backup to McElroy, but Saban admitted that AJ would have been the guy if Greg got hurt in the title game.

Saban better use the transfer portal this off season then if Milroe is the best we have. Hopefully if we get a new OC, he will encourage Saban to do that. So far Saban seems to have the most faith in Milroe than anyone I have heard and that scares me for next year.

See my next post.

ETA: We tried to address the portal back when Tua and Jalen were here. People forget Gardner Minshew was going to transfer in from East Carolina before deciding to sign with Washington State.

One more thing, we got extremely lucky with Mac Jones.

His family has a shite load of money so he wasn't necessarily chasing millions like other college athletes.

Couple that with the DUI he got early in his career and teams may not have been beating down his door to transfer to them.

Milroe isn't the best we have but Ty is a true freshman 6 games into the season. He's not ready yet. But he's a 5 star and by most accounts I've read his high school tape was better than Arch Manning's.

Most true freshmen aren't ready to jump in and start reading defenses and checking at the LOS like they are required to in our system. That doesn't make Ty a slow learner, it makes him very similar to 95% of other true freshmen.

Almost all of the true freshmen QBs who have "some" success in college football play in some variation of the simplistic, one read, spread system (which is basically what we ended up running for Jalen). Very few waltz in and run a more old school offense that requires checks and reads and adjustments and route reads on the fly like we do (and not just because BoB sucks).

So are you saying we need Ty to get a DUI in the off week?

I think you're assuming a lot here.

Is our offense complex? Yes and no. And it's not as if our OC is incapable of simplifying anything. That's ridiculous.

We all saw Ty Simpson do really well in the ADay game. He had only been on campus for a few months at that point. He was operating our offense (With the 2nd team receivers!), and moving the ball down the field with relative ease. He was making nice throws. He was decisive in taking off and running.

Odds are he was operating a somewhat simplified version of our offense in that scrimmage.
That was 6 months ago. Since then he's obviously made a ton of progress in his game as well as his understanding of the offense.

I think it's as simple as a totally stupid depth chart decision on behalf of Saban. i think if Ty ever makes it into a game this season, it will be much like when Tua came into the national championship game. Everyone will be wondering why in the hell he wasnt named the backup much sooner.

Im much more willing to believe that Milroe is highly unintelligent, and anxious, and unable to operate even a simple offense, than BOB being incapable of simplifying an offense for the QB.

we all saw leary do great in the a-day game also. yet he's nowhere to be seen, even with receivers dropping balls all over the field. so a-day performance means nothing, this much i've come to understand.

truthfully tho, i'm a fan of milroe but i wanted to see what ty could do against texag. he's the son of a coach and those guys just seem to get it.
