Yes. Yes they did. Its why Byrne has gone to the fan base the past 2 years hat in hand begging for NIL donations to Yea Alabama. When will some of you understand that we don't have the money to pay DeBoer's buyout, his staff's buyout, hire an elite new coaching staff, and still be competitive in NIL?
One of the only reasons we've been able to be sort of competitive with all these huge booster schools in NIL is because we haven't had to pay a buyout in almost 20 years. Fire DeBoer now and that changes.

Fire them all, including the AD! Stupid jerk is going to run Oats out of town…and DoBoer is going to average 2-4 losses a year! Mark my words!

Fans simply don’t understand, or aren’t hearing/ignoring, how much the landscape in this sport has drastically changed in just a couple of years. Of course our fan base, compared to other fan bases, lives in a bubble.

No truer words have ever been spoken.

Agreed. But there is a lot going on in the portal right now that demands attention.

I remember hearing for all these years (at least 20) how Alabama athletics is in the black every year. Yes, I know there are a lot of expenses but what happened to all that money from all those “in the black years”?
Was it all a lie? Not being a smart arse here. I’m genuinely curious.

We did a lot of facilities improvements in that time. Probably did more in the facilities arms race than just about anyone.

The problem Amarillo is that the price tag for a winning program … and money trumps tradition these days … has gotten a lot larger.

This right here is the problem!!!
We are Alabama! We “were” what other programs strived to be like! Yes, the landscape has changed, you ADAPT, you move mountains, you create your own landscape…we have not! It all started by not hiring a Saban disciple! You either adapt or get left behind…right now….WE ARE BEHIND!!

I’m with you on all but the Saban disciple, we don’t need this program to become a cult of personality.
Again, Nick Saban could not, under any circumstances, accomplish what he did in his heyday in the way that he did it in the current landscape, where players don’t have to submit themselves to a coach’s process, they can walk.
I do think a younger Saban would have adapted.

Loved what all CNS accomplished and there are some really good HCs from the CNS tree out there but I think it’s a mistake to automatically think the HC at Bama MUST be a former Saban assistant.
There were, are and will be good coaches out there who aren’t in the Saban tree. Nothing wrong with that. Bonus points if they are but IMO, not a deal breaker if they aren’t.
The idea that the HC “must be a Saban man” is eerily similar to how things were when Mike Dubose was hired when a lot of our fans were screaming about that.

Fans were demanding, literally demanding, that DuBose be the coach because he played for the Bear and was a defensive specialist. I think they finally got that out of their systems.

Guys , I am not going to make a new thread, but comparing these past two years. I think Sheridan was a better play caller than Grubbs. The receivers were open, he would adjust based on the opponent like the LSU game. Thoughts?

I’ve got some bad news for y’all. Sexton bent us over the table so bad, DeBoer’s contract DOESN’T HAVE a mitigation clause. In other words, if we fire him, he can get a job the next day making $15 million a year and we still owe him every dime left on his contract.
That’s why I keep saying it’s time to tell Sexton to go frick himself with his ridiculously one sided contracts. The only thing left for him to do is put in a clause that his coach owns the next university that fires them.

There is no way they are firing DeBoer. If they were they would time it with the current transfer portal window because if you do it after that’s two portal windows your program goes through with only another team with a coaching change going on to choose from.
Saban is correct. If you had a portal window in May with spring practice after you’d have every team finished playing, all coaching changes completed and coaches would have their roster completed and players in school practicing with the team.

Some of us older ones are emerging from that bubble. The sport has been mutated in a few years time into a semi-pro league and most of the traditions and pageantry and regionalism are being thrown on the garbage heap just so every entity involved can chase the dollars except for the fans who are being bled dry. I loved this sport dearly until 2020 and donated thousands of dollars to the university to support it. Not anymore. For one thing, I am pissing away money, throwing good money after bad to buy players, the majority of whom are entitled and lazy and chasing the bag. They didn’t want to put in the hard work in college in order to get to the league and make the big bucks. Pay me now! I’m all for the kids having enough money to be comfortable and maybe even enough to send home to their families, but I’ll be damned if I’ll help pay millions of dollars to kids barely out of high school just to play a game I would have loved to play just for the privilege of donning that Crimson jersey and being able to say I played for the University of Alabama! These “student-athletes” will make more during a 4 year college career than most of us will make in a lifetime. And most of them will piss it all away and be broke before they are 25. They don’t care who they play for; some of them hit the portal every year, looking for more money or more playing time. Again, they don’t want to work and earn more of either, they just want it given to them. TJ Finley will have played for 7 different schools by the time he is done. Is that what college football is all about?
Some others among you see the writing on the wall as I do. We could keep up in the facilities arms race and be among the best, but now that it has just become a spending contest, we’re holding a knife in a gunfight. The University of Alabama and Ole Miss and South Carolina and many other schools in less affluent states are at a huge disadvantage. Hell, even Auburn has a billionaire in Yella Fella. Who is ours? Answer: we don’t have one. We are trying hard to keep pace and we’re doing ok, but we fall just a little further behind each year that this is just a money pit with no rules, no limits, no guard rails. If someone puts something in place sooner rather than later, maybe we stay in the blue blood ranks. If not, we’re on the road to being another Nebraska: a former blue blood that just can’t play with the big boys anymore. That’s the sad reality and I’m glad I got to see the program I love at its zenith. I’m sad that I will probably live long enough to see its downfall. Roll Tide, y’all. It was fun while it lasted. But as usual, money ruined the whole damn thing.

Post of the millennium.
I saw something today I was going to bring up, a writer saying that the thing that made college football great was that it was an anachronism, a throwback to the past, and now that’s been taken away.
