The thought of hiring Joe Kines over Nick Saban just crossed my mind. I hate you SoG.

My gosh the offensive brainpower in this photo

Can you imagine the variations of off tackle runs these two drew up together? Truly a glorious time to be at the University.

Ah yes, the man that Shula refused to fire thus leading to Shula being fired.

I'm convinced. Dave Rader for basketball coach.

I dunno if we can afford to buy him out of his lucrative contract with Hoover Vacuums (he's actually a state senator in Oklahoma now but the vacuum salesman stories are way better content).

Shula to Saban was like going from the outhouse to penthouse in running a program.
I'm hoping this takes place with our basketball program.
Avery to Matta/Sampson/fallback option Forbes.

This is from the article of the pc Greg Byrne had and I love his nickname, "The Ninja".

LINK
quote:

“There’s going to be plenty of rumors out there during this process,” Byrne said. “I know people enjoy talking about these things. But unless you hear it from me, don’t believe it. What happens is agents will try to create leverage. Sometimes coaches will try to create leverage. What we want to do is be thorough but expedient during this process. Next time I talk publicly today will be to announce the new coach. And if anything gets out -- if somebody is a leading candidate or according to sources they have interviewed or are going to interview or whatever it may be -- I kinda assume that person doesn’t want the job.”

Between the lines: This is why they call Byrne “The Ninja.” As a one-man search committee, the tall Byrne is known for operating in the shadows when looking for a coach. He earned the nickname at Mississippi State when he hired Mullen without information leaks. And when he hired Rodriguez at Arizona, the news was well guarded until Byrne made the announcement on his Twitter account.

Here's the newest from al.com:
LINK

Alabama's basketball coaching job has been open for less than a week, and already we've seen lots of names bandied about, some more realistic than others. It's a key hire for Alabama, which has seen the program flounder since Mark Gottfried reached five straight NCAA tournaments from 2002-06. The last two years of Gottfried's tenure, plus the entirety of Anthony Grant and Avery Johnson's runs in Tuscaloosa, saw far more underachievement and disappointment than consistent success.

Beard- Would love it but nobody is paying a $12 million buyout

Brannen- Despite his past connections, I think the guy may be a rising star. He’s a big risk/reward guy. Not my first choice but if we got to this point, I’d give him a chance. Probably needs a little higher level school before you can judge him fairly.

Cronin scares me. Grant v2.0. Comes from a high mid-major that wins consistently. All you have to do is recruit the area and not screw up the program. Remember, Cincy produced Andy Kennedy too.

Davis- No way, no how, HELL NO!

Forbes- Still my favorite mid- major candidate. What can you say, he checks all the boxes except proven at the P5 level.

Hoiberg- I’m not convinced he’s the home run hire everybody thinks he is. Good coach, no doubt and certainly better than what we had but the guy has never been outside the Midwest. He’s only had one college job that he did well at but his track record is pretty short for all the hoopla surrounding him. I’d take him for sure but I’d be wary of long term deals or big buyouts. Make him prove his worth.

Kennedy- a poor man’s Prohm IMHO, maybe a little worse. Very limited upside. Great hire if you want to be a mediocre SEC program.

Matta- Home run if he takes it. Please take it.

Oates- Hot commodity that we would have to battle others to sign. Never coached in the south. A promising mid-major with all the risks that entails.

Pitino- Nice dream. Not gonna happen.

Prohm- The ultimate safe choice/fallback guy. I won’t bitch if we end up here but I won’t be wowed either. He gets us back to the peak Gottfired years but is that his ceiling?

Sampson- would be a very good choice but too many things working against this hire I think. His age, his past, the fact that Houston has deep pockets for a G5 and is willing to spend it. Just feels like a long shot.

Anybody else lands in the no way category like Donovan or the WTF category like Bohannon did. Would love to hear some news.

I agree with most of that Phil, and I agree with your general sentiment regarding Cronin. I will say, I don't really consider Cincinnati a basketball mid-major. Cronin coached Cincy in the Big East for 7 years and while the American isn't a major conference, it's generally a 2-4 bid league.

2014 : 4 bids
2015 : 2 bids
2016 : 4 bids
2017 : 2 bids
2018 : 3 bids
2019 : 4 bids

I pretty much consider him in the same conversation with coaches at any other major program at this point. I don't think he'd get to the SEC and be like "woah, this is big".

Going to be interesting to see if we (Arkansas) get in the mix. Rumors are that he wants to take a step up or at least is open to it. We hired our AD from Houston and Sampson had a part in getting him to Houston. If Mike goes, signs point to him being the main target.

Florida - White
Georgia - Crean
Kentucky - Calipari
LSU - NCAA
Ole Miss - K. Davis
Miss St - Howland
Missouri - Cuonzo
South Carolina - Martin
Tennessee - Barnes
Texas A&M - Buzz W.

I can’t really explain it, but I don’t think I want Nate Oats.

I’d rather have Prohm or Cronin who have proven they can win consistently at this level instead of playing Mid Major roulette again.

3manfront (Landrum?) just said Chris Beard's buyout is actually only around 4 mil if he leaves on his own.

*edit, I think it was Suttles that said it. I don't keep up with who is talking on these shows.

AD and Mike met yesterday at a closed golf course yesterday so we have some hope.

Probably going to just be requirements to change some assistants are something.

Cronin

Thing that worries me about him is although he has made the tournament the last 9 years. He has only made it to the S16 once. Most coaches can get lucky and do better than that in the tournament with that many chances.

Is there serious talk that he wants to leave his school? Always assumed he would stay there as long as they let him.
