#1 being the the most surprising outcome. Not just the fact that Bama won, but how they won

•2008 vs. Clemson

•2008 blackout vs. Georgia

•2009 SEC Championship vs. Florida

•2011 National Championship vs. LSU

•2015 Regular Season @Georgia

•2017 Sugar Bowl versus Clemson

•2021 SEC Championship versus Georgia

PERSONAL RANKING

7. Sugar Bowl versus Clemson

I talked myself into the win beforehand and to my knowledge, this is the only one on the list in which we were favored.

Nothing really surprising happened either. Had all the makings of a defensive slugfest and the Tide made a bunch of timely plays. Game was probably a little closer than the final score indicated

6. 2009 SEC Championship versus Florida

Similar to #7. By far the most surprising thing was the final score. Bama made timely plays particularly in the redzone. I considered it a coin flip going in as Florida looked vulnerable at multiple points in the season. This is above #7 because the manner in which we contained Tebow is more impressive than shutting down Kelly Bryant

5. Georgia Washout Game

I was really down on Coker and that Bama team. It was our first time being underdogs in a hot minute and I understood why. Seeing that team play a complete game was pretty surprising.

To be honest though, I can’t remember much of my thoughts prior to that game. Can’t rank it much higher because of that

4. 21-0

Coin flip game coming in. LSU showed nothing in Round 1 that they were significantly better. Additionally, there was a bit of writing on the wall Jordan Jefferson had two awful games leading up to his stinker in New Orleans.

Hitting our kicks, deciding to be aggressive on first down and McCarron responding, and how utterly shaken a great LSU team looked from kickoff gets it this high on the list

3. 2008 versus Clemson

I can still hear Herbie talking about how physical that Bama team was being. I was young and unfamiliar with Clemson but convinced that it would be a close game. However, coming out and beating up on a supposedly good team was pretty foreign to me

2. 2021 SEC Championship versus Georgia

We had good reason to be down on that team coming in. However nothing that happened in game was completely unforeseen. Coming in, I thought we needed:

1) An early big play from Jameson Williams

2) The run game and o-line to merely be serviceable

3) Score enough that it puts pressure on Stetson Bennett and an efficient, but not explosive, offense and see if they make a mistake or 2

All those completely reasonable hopes happened. Still, it’s silly to say that anyone envisioned kicking their arse

1. Georgia Blackout

I mean what can be said. Absolutely stunning first half in a game where I was hoping we would keep it close. For that buildup, that atmosphere, and the nervousness to completely evaporate in a little over an hour, holy shite.

This wasn’t really a shocker to me, and it reminds me a lot of the 1993 Sugar Bowl in that the opponent wasn’t quite as good as advertised, they weren’t hungry, and Alabama was starving and hyperfocused.

Disagree

2008 UF is the only one on the list I felt Bama was an underdog.

It's hard for me to rank these games but I'll never forget the curb stomping we put on them and the excitement. Anyone else remember the hit Mark Barron put on the kick returner in that game? That set the tone for the rest of the game.

1. 2008 Clemson
2. 2008 Georgia
3. 2021 SEC Championship-Georgia

I felt strangely confident in 2011 NC against LSU and the 2009 SEC Championship, and generally had no worries about the 2017 Sugar Bowl or the 2015 Georgia game.

The only game that has legitimately surprised me since 2008 is the 2018 National Championship. Never in a million years would I have expected that team to get beaten like that

It may seem like recency bias, but there's no way on earth I saw us beating Georgia in the 2021 sec championship game. 2015 I was a bit more confident so I wasn't too worried but this year after the Auburn game I thought we were gonna get completely ramrodded

Same. We almost beat them in 2008. Florida just separated during the 4th quarter. But I don't think anyone expected us to cornhole Georgia like we did in the blackout. Win, sure. But embarrass them? No. That was halftime score was a total shock.

Edit: the year

I bought into thinking that the best offenses will always have a chance to score on the best defenses. Which is objectively true. Saban has flat out admitted how hard it is to stop

I truly believe that we were an awful matchup for Georgia. Imagine how badly they would have been shitting their pants if Young’s throw was slightly more on target and Jameson streaked down the field for a 75 yard TD. He was this close to having 284 yards and 3 tds in 5 quarters of play

I know you meant 2008.

2009 Florida returned almost everyone from 2008, but Harvin and Mullen were huge losses. Steve Addazio was an awful OC and Florida looked mortal several times throughout the year.

I also think Alabama having a fight against Auburn in JHS (but playing on a Friday and having another day to rest and prepare) while Florida said an emotional good bye to Tebow at BHG against a shitty FSU team was another thing that kept Alabama a little more focused.

Talent was comparable. Alabama was just better prepared, emotionally and schematically. McElwain called a great game offensively.

Yep. Very wrong year.

I also think it was because I'd seen his close we came, and knew how good it was a very good possibility. In 08, everything was new. I was mid 20s, and we had pretty much sucked for 15 years straight. Not Vandy sucked, but by our standard, it was one of the darkest times. To suddenly be an all around dominant team, was something i hadn't seen since before puberty. Hell, I was living in Atlanta for the 92 title, and was 100x more more interested in baseball.

So 08 was all new territory. 09 is when it was time to take it to the next level.

Not sure there was a better offensive game plan in the Saban era than the first half of the '08 UGa game.

1. 2008 Clemson (I was 18 so only knew a mediocre Alabama. The team that started it all. Intro to Mt. Cody, Ingram, Julio, Donta, etc)

2. 2008 blackout vs. Georgia (Went with a friend who's parents are UGA season ticket holders. Needless to say we were the only ones wearing white in our section. They left at halftime so we sat on the 50 the rest of the game in shock)

3. 2021 SEC Championship versus Georgia (After the poor showing at AU I figured we were beat. Apparently a lot of other Bama fans did too as we were outnumbered at least 65/35 inside the Benz)

4. 2015 Regular Season @Georgia (We looked like crap against Ole Piss and I just figured they were better. Kiffin called a great game and Henry was dragging folks through the mud. Probably one of the most fun games I've been to.)

5. 2009 SEC Championship vs. Florida (That UF team was loaded but I really felt we were motivated to beat them. Great play calling all night long. I just had a good feeling especially with Dunlap out with a DUI)

6. 2017 Sugar Bowl versus Clemson (Kelly Bryant didnt scare me at all.)

7. 2011 National Championship vs. LSU (We knew we were better and they did too. "A mauling"...
If we didnt have mental midget for a kicker we beat them in November.)

***Honorable mention when Clemson kicked our arse is the only game in the Saban era (scratch 2007) that we were dominated and felt like we didnt want anymore. ONCE in 15+ years
