Yep this is how I view it as well. Battled a top 3 team in the country despite getting killed on the boards and having two key rotational players out. I didn't lose any sleep over the loss. I just hope to go 2-2 during this brutal 4 game stretch.

Noah Williamson might be the worst player in college basketball.

I think we might have a higher ceiling as a team than Purdue does because of all the new/young pieces, but our frontcourt is still very...not good at the moment.

Bol hitting those 3's was amazing.

Right now we have .5 centers. Until Sherrell sacks up and Williamson gets his abilities back from the Monstars, that’s gonna be a critical weakness for us.

That's true but what teams will we play down the line better than them?
I'm really asking. Short list if any. Florida?

Not a ton. Most are still trying to gel or see what they have. They are legit right now. That guard put on a show. Respect. #4 was a man inside.

We have some so far since 2018. But yea, someone has to step up. Lots of time to improve.

Noah looks like he has trouble remembering how fine motor skills work

I think forwards are going to figure itself out when Bristow gets back on the court but like Oats said: their 5'10'' guard out rebounded each of our forwards/centers. It's not just a center problem but the center problem is probably roster not effort based.

Rebounding is easier to fix than not being able to score.

We will get better.

Sometimes that has as much to do with lucky bounces as anything else.

Dennis Rodman proved it was a science.

But he didn't prove it in one game. And he wasn't a 5'10" point guard.

it could be better if the guys looked like they've ever actually seen someone blocked off the boards. it was like they had no clue how to get in between the opponent and the rim to force them to go over their backs for the ball. maybe thats just a lost art, idk.

The guys certainly can give more focus and effort in rebounding but in fairness, some of it is an issue with the drop defense they use. They play the ball handler tight forcing him to pass or drive. So, they often drive past the on ball defender. The bigs use the drop and lose man assignment for rebounding. Our bigs end up leaving their man to defend the drive so their man (a big) is either free to rebound or being blocked out by a smaller player.

The high on ball pressure is part of Oats system to push tempo but we get too many hand check/reach in fouls out high or allow the dribble drive from the top putting our bigs in a bad position and the team in bad rebounding position in general.

There's a give and take defensively with pushing tempo. Usually it's okay but certain types of opponents are an issue.

Good post.

I get Oats pointing to effort.

But definitely agree that Purdue was always going to take a lot more effort than likely anyone else in the country. Their point guard keeps the defense scrambling and then they have the huge veteran frontline players to take advantage establishing position on the boards.

The extra effort he has in mind was likely more Philon, Allen, Trelly etc crashing in for rebounds and loose balls after a shot the way they were able to do against St John's.
