Folks, the world is on fire. Protesters are defying the law of history in their ability to organize and stay active and indignant with their cause. Now UK and Australia and so many others are doing exactly what millions are doing in this country and using the same chants and protest signs. Who has ever seen such things in your lifetime? This movement seems to be growing by leaps and bounds now worldwide. In the UK, protesters just tore down a statue of a slave trader that should have been long gone and chucked him in a lake. They too have their looters and rioters and it's all so familiar now.

The world is on fire.

I was alive in the late 1960s but way too young to remember them.

I am certain a lot of this worldwide frustration is the direct result governments shutting down the lives and livelihoods of their entire populations worldwide and somehow thinking nothing bad would happen.

I really hope to be wrong but I've been saying we're living the 1930s for a while now and we know how that decade ended.

Funny b/c I was thinking of the looting scene from that movie in regards to how white liberals are with AAs.

Not quite sure I want to blame all this on COVID 19

I know what virus would end it. A stomach bug. No way anyone could riot and loot with that. #teamvirus

The stress of the last 3 months builds up like a pressure cooker. All it needs is a trigger.

Would there have been turmoil anyhow, but worldwide? Nope.

And it isn't COVID's fault. It's the way leaders reacted.

I got a little bored but it hasn’t made me want to go throw a brick through a window yet

I haven't either but then I don't live in a big city, worked all the way through it, and live in a state where the lockdowns were neither as draconian as other places nor as strictly enforced.

They are hard to find, but there have been several studies and stories about the impact. Interestingly, the younger someone is the worse the impact seems to be.

Guess who is most impacted? 18-29 year olds. How old do the people you see rioting appear to be?

Washington Post story about it

Look I get your point . I am just ornery today for some reason

I am just one that thinks we don’t need an excuse for our actions ... all about life choices

There have been some powerful protests done the right way with good messages , but I can’t get past the looting , rioting of private and innocent businesses and attacking innocent people ones

What Bear said. There is a significant majority that is protesting for the right cause. But their movement has been hijacked by every extremist group looking for an excuse to advance their agenda and by every hood and thug looking for a five finger discount. I’m sick and tired of the senseless destruction and violence against innocent people, many of them of color, by these nutjobs. It robs the protesters of momentum and purpose as middle America is turned off by the rioting. The message is just and right but it’s being drowned out by the noise.

I am convinced of this as well. There is more to this outburst than just the Floyd death. The AA community has been particularly hit hard by COVID and the economic downturn. Throw in the toxic political culture we are in with the Trump era and social media and cable news and you have a volatile toxic mix that was ready to blow.

Agreed. I always enjoy seeing University leadership out in the community.

In Washington DC the protesters had their largest numbers yesterday. Of significance is that even though we just saw the largest rally, there was not one single arrest. Again, not one single arrest. Trump today sent the national guard home. Many cities, like NY, have done away with their curfew completely. Does that not indicate that the narrative is being less hijacked by hate groups and the lawless?

Trump had a successful strategy to meet the hate groups and looters with force even if it meant keeping the protesters under stricter guidelines to get to them. As soon as this stuff gets under control the protesters are the greatest benefactors and they seem to know it and many are expressing appreciation.

In the meantime, is it fair or even accurate for Fox News and the republicans to continue to highlight a segment of this protest that simply doesn't exist at the destructive level we just went through? Or CNN literally screaming at the camera that the government and police love to push around all peace minding protesters?

This intellectual hijacking by the media and politicians alike continues to do more damage in this country than all the looters, rioters and bad policemen combined.
