I read a barber undergoes more hours of training than a new police officer. Recruiting folks from military is definitely suspect.

I guess it could vary by department, but my brother-in-law is a cop and he had to undergo some pretty intense training.

It's going down in Albertville right now. Protesters have come to a small town.

I kind of thought that the monument in front of the Court house annex would cause trouble one day.

It's really a tacky monument and the rebel flag. They should never have been put up. It's only been added recently and is not historic anyway.

Trashy....

Yep

The thing is. I've lived in A'ville since 1971, and I don't remember the citizens being asked if we wanted that monument put up in front of a government office.

I've always said it needs to be taken down.

You should read more than just the comics.

Cops undergo extensive background checks, physical examinations, psychological examinations, being tased and maced, and the equivalent of Marine Corps basic training just for the privilege of being underpaid and verbally abused by the scum of the earth.

"... one guy in my squadron years ago was kicked out of the service and was a deputy in MS less than 6 months later."

Maybe your squadron wasn't, shall we say, top notch.

Are you there? If so how it is playing out? The organizer was pretty strong in the media saying it was not going an anti-police or violent protest but instead a march against injustice. Hope that holds out.

And that monument thing is terrible. I looked it up. It was built in 1996 and moved to that location in 2005 because some work displaced it. Someone thought that was appropriate in 2005? Really?

I am utterly against taking down monuments erected at a time when the soldiers they honored were still around (side note - a muscle shoals group wants one there moved from the city square to a veteran’s cemetery. That is a very appropriate thing to do) but 2005? I’ll drive the truck to haul it off.

Holy crap, jatebe. That's the ugliest monument I've ever seen.

There were people in 1996 still putting up confederate monuments? And more importantly, who the hell decided to let a 4th grade art class design it?

I'm triggered.

My daughter just finished the 4th grade last month.

She's a helluva lot better at art than whomever made that thing.

This is the group that put the monument up. LINK Why?? I don't know.

Reading their facebook page, looks like their headquarters is in Mississippi.

I live about a mile from downtown and the high school where the march was suppose to start. But I haven't heard anything yet.

I did keep a watch out my kitchen window for smoke, in case they decided to burn the court house down.

Let me show you how inherently stupid the people committing violent acts and vandalism at these events are and how they have nothing to do with advancing any cause.

This is the monument to the 54th Massachusetts.

For those that may not know, that unit was the basis for the movie Glory - the first all black (except for officers, it was still 1863) US army unit to be formed east of the Mississippi.
