Marshall would have gone to Texas for 3 mil anytime up to when Smart was hired. Battle did all he could do with what he had to work with.
He said he was coming, his word is no good as I see it.
Ps if you are the breadwinner you inform the family that a jet will be here to pick us up, and have your arse ready to load up.
smart poeple don't leave over a mil on the table.

I just find it hard to believe that Marshall didn't consult his family until the time we made the offer. If they were really that firm about staying in Kansas, I imagine that he knew while he kept giving us assurances.

I really fell we missed out on Smart, but that was the gamble we took to attempt to land Marshall.

Wish we knew he would flake from the beginning. Smart seemed eager and we could let Texas chase Marshall.

I think Marshall weighed these options: Bama would be more money but a move and harder work rebuilding a team in a tough conference where you aren't the top dog. Or, stay in Wichita on cruise control, no move, less work, a little less money but top dog in the conference and will wait on a premier job offer IF he wants it. He may retire there.

Smart turned down Illinois, Marquette, and UCLA among others.

Not that it matters now, but it turns out one of the Koch brothers was behind Marshall staying at WSU:

When they came up with all that cash suddenly, I kind of figured the Koch's must have been involved.

On another note, are what are the negatives with Mike White, other than he's only been a HC for a few years? His record at La Tech looks good, and it sounds like he's a great recruiter and runs an exciting system.

Hasn't taken a team to the big dance would be the one I'd guess.

I think whites biggest problem is that he hasn't performed well in tournaments. They haven't won their conference tourney, even though they finished tied for first two years in a row. And he hasn't gotten very deep in the nit.

But Louisiana tech was terrible before he got there, so he's doing something right. Definitely more proven then cjp

I'm glad that Battle tried to hire Marshall but that every complete "outsider" thought:

1) Wichita St would come up with a pretty big raise in counter

2) Marshall already wavered in one past move to the point of having a PC before backing out

3) Marshall seems to anyone with eyes like kind of an arse and, so, it certainly didn't surprise most of the posters in this thread that he would make the most of the situation without being straightforward.

All this makes me wonder how in the hell Battle and the "insiders" were really caught so "off guard" by how it played out.

They should have been "on guard" and then some.

Prohm as HC with Pettway, Pearson, and Dunn as assistants

Maybe the basketball alumni would be happy then

The idea that we got beat by a once community college for a coach really pisses me off

Hell, the NBA boys like Mo, and Askins and Horry couldn't screw up this search any worse than BB already has, give 'em a shot. At least they know basketball. Battle doesn't have a clue.
