Smothers felt like a luxury take. I’m not sure why people are melting over him
I’m with you on this. I’m fine either way. If he’s visiting other places after committing then I’d rather he go.
But we haven’t done well so far this cycle so far. Smothers doesn’t bother me but the whole situation does. We’ll see how we finish.

You're out of your mind if you think Alabama can compete at a high level without recruiting very well at the HS ranks because we will never be able to outspend those schools.
I guess my point was that there is no difference between HS recruiting and the portal. They are free agents after one year anyways and we have to spend to keep them.

Texas State OL Brock Riker to Penn State.

Our RB depth is a guy who didn’t really impress (Hill), a freshman who couldn’t break into the rotation despite tailback situation (Dear), a guy who lost his snaps to Hill as the season progressed ( Riley), and a true freshman.
We need Smothers. He’s not a luxury. We need proven production at the positions that underperformed in 2025.

I think the difference is that you may be able to convince a guy to take a more team friendly deal if they are already on the roster. I would say it's also a lot cheaper to pay HS recruits than it is to rebuild your roster from the portal every year. Formby got $1.7MM at A&M, I can promise you that you can find a HS recruit just as good as him that will sign for less than that.

Makes sense, there is a built in advantage to re-recruiting rather than just recruiting. I still think you need to focus on both and so far this portal has been a massive disappointment for two reasons: (1) we havent been able to re-recruit or retain a lot of players and (2) we havent been able to replace, let alone upgrade the departures

What players left that you think hurts or that we wouldnt have made the playoffs without them? I think the only player that left that hurts is Noah Carter because of his potential, and maybe James Smith, but Smith was very average a lot of the year including multiple massive penalties that killed Alabama at times. It shows you how dumb these transfer portal rankings are that he's regarded as a top 10 player in the portal.
I'm hoping we get another OL & DL or two, but we shall see. Still got some more time!

Smothers is already enrolled in classes at Alabama, but he hasn't signed?
What?
Exactly. There isnt a chance that he is enrolled and hasn't signed. He may be trying to pull a Demond Williams, but lets also not act like Tim Watts and them fellas never get anything wrong. They were sure Cam Coleman was on campus days ago and he didnt get on campus until yesterday.

To be fair, it wasn't BOL who was reporting he was on campus. They were adamant his visit would be later in the week.

Disagree. Aside from the fact Smothers has some actual wiggle and can juke guys, he (IMO) gets MASSIVE points for his ability to pass protect.
Currently, none of our guys on the roster have any ability to juke anyone and they all collectively are HORRIBLE pass protectors.
In that sense, Smothers would be a massive upgrade and maybe starting a fire under the other RBs asses that consistently whifffing in pass protection ain’t gonna get it.
Until he gets schooled in the Robert Gillespie Make the Wrong Read, Fall Down Whenever You're Touched (and Sometimes Before), and Miss Blocks Master Class. Gillespie is a true instructor extraordinaire

Any word on how Coleman’s visit went?

You good folks are going to have to back away. You're making yourself miserable about something you nor the U of A can control (anymore).
Just remember Texas. Texas A&M, OSU, and even LSU can buy our players if they really want them.
Really need a top-notch coaching staff that can mold good/average/great talent into a well-oiled football team.
The IQ of our roster is in need of a major upgrade. You're seeing that every time Indiana takes the field.

God Blessing him with the amount of money Bama or Texas is about to pay him.

Faith in the direction of this program hasn't been lower since 2006. This regime is in prove-it territory and rightfully so. The trajectory of this program is very murky in early 2026.
Calling out our RBC is justified because the last time we had a 1k rusher was his first season here. The most productive tailbacks he's coached were not developed by him at all. Two years in with our OLC, we're not really seeing progress and arguably seeing regression on the OL.
I don't think either can develop players and the only solution for 2026 is to find players who are already developed and replacing the coaches.

Dear, Crowell and Hill can run it and our coaching staff hasn’t demonstrated an ability to feature running backs.
Look at the nfl. They don’t overpay the position because, aside from a few outliers, that’s a position that can be done decently by a replacement level player. It isn’t a unique skill set like qb, wr, or
db
Running backs and linebacks are the most replaceable players on a roster.
