If we make it to the championship and then get blown out? I can’t see him getting fired for that. That’s like firing a coach after losing in the Super Bowl

National no, SEC two years in a row is what I meant. Should have clarified.

Are we just broke? Honest question. I feel like we’re getting a few good ones in the portal but am afraid we’re gonna end up with mostly crumbs. And getting mostly crumbs will put us on the path of becoming Mississippi State or maybe Missouri, where 7-5 or 8-4 is the norm.

I hope I’m wrong and would love to be wrong.

Seems like we’re broke. We needed difference makers on the OL and have brought in depth players/development prospects.

That’s why I said it feels like we are losing. Maybe that’s the new normal; going to be tough after the last two decades.

Bama is likely somewhere in the middle when it comes to money. Not in the upper tier with teams like Texas, Oregon, A&M etc and their seemingly limitless pockets. Or in the tier between the richest of the rich and the middle tier: teams like LSU and UGA

Nor in the bottom basically broke teams like most CFB teams (if you include G6 teams).

They just have to be smart (and lucky) about who they get and hope to avoid too many injuries that would test depth.

Are we broke? No. The sad reality is we probably had to spend to keep our roster together. Surely other programs are back channeling some of our players to enter the portal. Pretty sure that happened to Keeley last year with ND.

I think honestly after spending on our guys and getting smothers, the staff set aside money for a few key pieces. Guess we will see.

80%+ of the portal is teams passing depth back and forth for any number of reasons.

Overpaid and not willing to take a cut
PT
Grabbing a bigger bag
Recruiting misses
Bad fit for scheme
Position change
Etc.

Fans of the team see former 4 star and get all excited.

Formby is a great example he hits a couple of the above and gets 7 figures. Aggies think it’s great because he is a former 4 star that started 16 games at Alabama. Thy can “develop” him better than we can to justify a below avg starter getting 7 figures.

I wouldn’t necessarily knock Fromby. Most of what you see is true but I don’t think he fits our “scheme.” We need athletic lineman that can get up field. He doesn’t fit that. Just a bad fit overall. Maybe he will be more serviceable at A&M.

Are we sure that’s accurate? Formby wants to be a tackle but he’s a turnstile. I think the story of him getting 1.7 m is just a story.

It’s possible this is dramatic, but I think this portal season is Deboers future at Bama. If he doesn’t get this right, and right the ship, he is in trouble. He doesn’t get another year like this in my opinion.

We’re about to play a true sophomore at QB with potentially 2 true sophomores at tackle. There is absolutely 0% chance that DeBoer is going to win enough post season games to make the Bama fan base satisfied next year (if he even makes the playoffs).

I’d be willing to give someone 2-1 odds (either take a break or $s if we can find a trusted holder) that there won’t be a 1st year starter at QB that wins the NC in the next 5 seasons (which would make it a total of 10 years with none, since Mac in 2020 was the last one).

I disagree, Formby was pretty bad most snaps he played here and I don’t see a scheme out there where he would fit if edge rushers just go past him untouched. The problem is that we didn’t upgrade the position or even replace him with a similar player.

Bryce won the Hesiman and lead us to a Natty appearance that we would have won without a multitude of injuries as a true sophomore. There's definitely better than a 0% chance.

It is a good thing you aren't the Alabama AD. You sir, are the poster child for why much of the college football world views Alabama football fans as irrational and unreasonable.

JJ McCarthy was also not a transfer. But he was also captain handoff

He was the best offensive player in the Indiana game. Showed great hands after taking a wicked hit. Very encouraging to Ryan, as well as the fans.

Different era, immediately placed in semifinals, almost lost several games to bad teams, had the greatest coach of all time coaching the team

People aren’t willing to accept that we have probably one of the better coaches in college football. Could be that they are trolls or to your point irrational. Other programs dream about making conference title games, winning a playoff game and having the number two recruiting class with their second year coach.

It’s not about transfer, it’s about first year starter. JJ played in 11 games in 2021 and won the starting job in 2022 before finally being the full season starter in 2023. He wasn’t a 1st year starter in 2023
