I think these coaches would rather play a high quality tackle at guard than a high quality guard at tackle.

Because of that and the questions around whether Lloyd is ready getting a high quality tackle makes a lot of sense even if he ends up competing inside with Sanders and whoever else we bring in.

Part of our problem last year was we had like four slow footed IOLs competing for LG, RG and RT and in the end it was better to deal with learning pains with a TF than leaving any of them alone on the edge.

Smothers will be the lead back I’m guessing. He definitely has a lot more fight in him judging by his NC State highlights. This could push out Riley or Hill. Hopefully not, but even so, we’ll still be loaded

Do we have any reason to believe he is ready?

I just heard he is coming for a visit. Great news.

If we could pull Jacarrius Peak that would a huge get for us. I know we have that center(IIRC) coming in from UM I wish we could get that OT Andrew Sprague from there as well who is in the portal. Sprague is originally from Missouri.

I saw that Tyree Adams from LSU is expected to visit. Does anyone know if that will happen or when?

FSU was interested in Lagway, but it looks like we’ll be seeing Ashton Daniels in Tuscaloosa instead.

Alabama lands No. 1 transfer RB: Can Hollywood Smothers fix Crimson Tide ground game?

quote:

Smothers, ranked as The Athletic’s No. 1 running back in the portal, was a first-team All-ACC selection in 2025. In 11 games, Smothers rushed for 939 yards and six touchdowns, averaging 5.9 yards per rush. He was also a weapon in the passing game, catching 37 passes for 189 yards and a score. He averaged 85.3 rushing yards per game, tops among ACC running backs.

Alabama made running back a priority when the transfer portal opened, looking to get a proven back who could help power its run game in 2026, and Smothers should fill that need. The 5-foot-11, 195-pound Smothers is a former four-star recruit who started his career at Oklahoma before transferring to NC State before the 2024 season. Smothers has two years of eligibility remaining.

The pass catching ability of Hollywood seems to fit into this staff a lot better than the other guys we’ve had on campus. He’s definitely got some explosiveness too that has been missing the past two years. It’s going to be awesome to watch a RB make guys miss again.

If we get the kid from USC (OLB) at least one of the ILB’s from OSU or VT and a nice grouping of OL and a pick of maybe 2-3 DL. We would have filled our needs.

Think about it minus the $, Bama just went to the playoffs with a busted OL, average DL, and a hurt QB. Theres alot of potential here.

Smothers is a difference maker. Hes slippery in space.

We need a back that can create his own yardage when blocking isnt perfect.

I got to admit that I wasn't aware of Smothers until he got on our radar as a major target. The tape pops with this kid. If we can't get production out of our tailbacks with him in the RB room then we probably won't be getting it from anyone. He's got good vision in the backfield and makes decisive cuts. He's got breakaway speed. Unlike Jam or Hill, when he gets a crease he's got a chance to break it for a big gain. I was surprised by his power through contact too. He's not looking to run over people at his size but he's seems to be trying to win contact if contact is going to happen. NCST probably didn't throw to him enough based on the highlights. This is a young man you want to get in space. I'm surprised he only had 1100 total yards on offense. He seems like the kind of back who would have 3-400 yards receiving in a prolific offense.

Honestly, his tape reminds me of watching highlights of Gibbs at GT leading up to the 2022 season.

Kinda odd that Proctor hasn't announced yet, wonder what the deal is there.

I've been saying for the last year or two that I could see him being a high level G in the NFL and we've been playing him out of position. Wonder if he might be contemplating that move for a year? Wishful thinking.

Either way he's still playing 30lbs overweight.

Given that he wasn’t part of the Formby / Geno V / Carroll shuffle… I’d say it’s an open question.

Which is why I was suggesting getting a tackle despite having two former 5* guys on the roster and whoever isn’t starting at LT is also competing for one of the open guard spots.

Proctor moving to LG would be a good way to onboard a young LT if we aren't signing a drop-in LT. Sorta similar to Formby playing guard next to Carroll like the back half of 2025.

Frankly, I do not believe Proctor is a first round grade though he may hear that from the advisory board. He's got all the makings of a high profile prospect that is still sitting around in the green room at the end of the first round.
