Alabama-Ole Miss grades: Tide’s defensive stars fuel comeback win

quote:

Quarterback grade: Jalen Hurts, 68.1

While Alabama came out with the win on the road against a top-20 opponent, it was in spite of a below-average passing performance from freshman quarterback Jalen Hurts. Twelve of his 19 completions came on throws aimed behind the line of scrimmage, due to an abundance of screen passes early – something we saw from both teams. But once the game opened up more, Hurts didn’t look quite as comfortable as we’ve seen in previous weeks. He made a notable misread of coverage early in the second quarter, resulting in a pass thrown right to Rebels cornerback Montrell Custis that should have been picked off. Instead, Alabama took advantage of the break with a 60-yard punt on the next play. Hurts also killed the team’s next drive by sacking himself and losing the ball without contact during his throwing motion.

quote:

Top offensive grades:
C Bradley Bozeman, 79.8
TE O.J. Howard, 74.1
WR Calvin Ridley, 74.1
RB Damien Harris, 72.0
TE Brandon Greene, 69.3

quote:

Top defensive grades:
LB Reuben Foster, 85.9
DE Jonathan Allen, 85.3
DT Dalvin Tomlinson, 85.2
DE Tim Williams, 80.0
DE Ryan Anderson, 78.2

quote:

Edge rusher Tim Williams had his usual strong performance, converting five of his 30 rushes into pressures, including a bull rush at 5:44 of the fourth that forced an interception, but was mostly overshadowed by a pair of teammates on the defensive line. End Jonathan Allen caught the pick on that play and took it to the end zone to extend Alabama’s lead to 17. Outside of that, he picked up seven pressures to go with a defensive stop and several other positive plays against the run.

Jalen was lucky he fumbled that one throw. It had pick 6 written all over it.

This website, while interesting, really has zero value in grading Hurts performance for our purposes strictly as Alabama fans. Why? Well, what does the "P" stand for? The writer clearly devalues Hurts' contributions to the ground game, because he's looking at him as a future pro QB prospect. Are any of us really all that bothered by the fact that we haven't had a serious NFL QB since Richard Todd? Does it really matter how Hurts as an 18 year old kid grades out on an NFL grading scale?

Jalen's numbers will improve. They are still bringing him along slowly and he is still getting comfortable.

Winning at Ole Miss should do wonders for his development over the next couple of weeks. Think about how Blake Sims got going after a couple of weeks. Same with Jake Coker last season...

No mention of Hentges' impressive performance? I mean, the guy had like 3 tfl and several possible big plays broken up...

And he took out one of the best players on the other, er, our team.

As for Jalen - he definitely struggled throwing the ball. I don't think Kiffin's plan really got Jalen in a groove, and then things snowballed.

However, like we've said, his poise and ability to not let things shake him helped us win the game. We went down 24-3 (and he was not playing well and the offense was a mess) and he calmly hit Coop 20 yards down field then ran us into position to score.

I understand the concept of keeping Stew and Ridley on separate sides of the field for simplicity, but those guys appear to be our best blockers on the perimeter.

I wonder if Stew hadn't gotten hurt if we would have started lining them up on the same side. I am pretty sure it has been reported that both guys know all the receiver positions, so I guess that's another trump card we have for use later in the season...

Hurts would have thrown for a TD had the TE not stopped running and continued his route.

True, or he could have just thrown it to the wide open TE standing in the endzone.

As I've said, I think his passing needs improvement. It's hard to nitpick TOO much on that particular play, but at this point, he hasn't done a great job of making accurate passes downfield. Sure, if the TE hadn't broken off his route and stopped, he might have caught the ball. But, in that situation, a veteran QB would have tossed him a softball.

Well when you don't have a veteran QB throwing to you, keep running your route.

I'm not going to blame the guy for not running through the endzone when he was already wide open and waiting on the ball.

He didn't stop until after the ball was thrown.

I'll have to watch the replay, but I really thought Hurts should have just lobbed it out there instead of making it difficult. But, again, I can't blame him too much for that play. I'm more concerned about the rest of his downfield passing. He has the talent, but it hasn't come together just yet.

I agree, Hurts should've lobbed it...but if the TE does continue running, I think he probably catches it...ultimately though, when a guy's that wide open, it's on the QB...

OJ Howard makes that catch...but then again, OJ Howard probably isn't that wide open.
