This is a shitty virus, but if people would use common sense, it would go away. I’m not minimizing anything, it’s just common sense. Cut back as much as possible on public outings and just load up on groceries once every two weeks or so.

If everyone would or could do this, the spread would slow down considerably.

An article blamed the Lee County high numbers on church.
Not one particular church. Just church.
It's as if that's the only county that attended any church in early March and that was the only place Lee County residents went

It was the East Alabama Medical Center blaming church.

I think people are more likely have close interactions with others at church than most other places.

And church is likely one of the last places certain people would give up going to.

Lee County coronavirus hotspot’s common factor? Church, hospital says

quote:

Many of the patients being treated in the coronavirus hotspot of Lee County had a common “last public setting,” a hospital says. A sizable number of them were at church.

In a statement Thursday night, East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika repeated a request for churches to stop meeting in conventional fashion, a step that would help slow the spread of the deadly virus. The hospital said Lee County has spiked from 1 positive case on March 15 to 47 cases less than two weeks later.

That’s the third-most cases of any Alabama County behind much larger counties Jefferson (169 cases) and Shelby (53).....

The number of people hospitalized has more than doubled since Tuesday, surging from 7 to 15 by Thursday night while another 24 patients are hospitalized with suspected COVID-19 cases, the statement said. One patient hospitalized for the coronavirus has been discharged.

"While there are no absolute patterns among the 47 confirmed cases in Lee County, one nugget of information does stand out a little -- the last public setting for a sizable number of them was at church," the hospital statement said. "Not at one church, or churches in one town, but at church in general.

"While many churches have moved to online services only—or cancelled church services altogether in the interim—there are reports that some still met as recently as last Sunday."

The hospital did not identify any specific church.

Such meetings are counter to the prescribed public health policy of groups of people coming together – summarized in the now-familiar phrase of "social distancing." The virus is easily transmitted between people and keeping a distance provides a buffer designed to slow the spread.

The hospital declared itself a “hot spot” Wednesday in having the third-most positive cases of any Alabama county despite having much smaller populations than the two counties. By population, Jefferson County (which has 169 cases) has 300 percent more people than Lee County and Shelby County (which has 53 cases) has 32 percent more people.

Close behind Lee County with 43 cases, Madison County has 126 percent more people.

An elimination of in-person church services might help stem the flow of positive cases, the hospital said.

“We again are asking that church members please not gather until our region has been deemed safe for group activities,” the hospital statement said. “Please find alternate ways to worship and stay together as a ‘church’ without congregating.”

Another 18 positive cases from three surrounding areas that the hospital services pushes the Auburn-area total to 65.

I doubt Sky Bar's packed St. Patrick's Day celebration helped matters.

I told my mom to stay home on Sunday and listen to all the Joyce Meyer's cassettes she would play constantly while I was in high school. My mom loved her some Joyce.

The Montgomery Advertiser has a good story (yeah, shocked me too) about a cluster outbreak in Chambers county that almost certainly spilled into Lee and may have played a role in EAMC's well intended but poorly received by many press release.

In a nutshell, this one church had a bunch of people get really sick after a service held on March 8th.

I emphasized the date because that's well before there was a confirmed case in Alabama. The preacher, to his great credit, figured out something unique was happening and went virtual before anyone suggested he do it but the cat was out of the bag. It was covid and the community spread was running wild.

Some of y'all know where I fall on religion but you will never be able to tell me Joyce can't preach. It felt like she would do a 15 cassette series on Grace or some other topic with no filler. She would kill it.

I am not sure about your views on religion, but Joyce Myers is a damnable heretic. Just one of Joyce’s greatest hits, “ "I am not poor. I am not miserable and I am not a sinner.“ The Bible is quite clear that Ms Meyers is in fact a sinner.

It pains me that people spend and send money to support TD Jakes, Meyers, Creflo Dollar, Joel Osteen, and a host of other people who are deceptive wolves.

The end of the matter is this. The Creator has absolute ownership of His creation. By rights, He could destroy it all and He could torture us all if He were to choose to do so. Just like we could create a beautiful painting worth millions of dollars in the art market and we would be absolutely within our rights to destroy it since it is our creation to do with as we please. We have zero place to command God to heal anyone or to give us anything. “Who has given to God that he might be repaid?”

The mistake we make is confusing God’s kindness for weakness or subservience. God is indeed gracious and merciful. He is slow to anger and overlooks sin for a time that we might repent and be saved. He has said that if anyone confessed with their mouth that Jesus is Lord and believes in their heart that God raised Him from the dead, they will be saved. God is indeed good, but He is not beneath His creation nor answerable to us.

Meyers and others of her ilk try to make God a genie to be called upon to grant man’s wishes and make us rich and healthy and materially filled. Ephesians tells us the those who are in Christ are the beneficiaries of every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places. There are desperately poor people who have far greater peace, contentment and joy than Meyers and dollar and Jakes could ever dream of having.

I say this to point out that if anyone’s understanding of God is based upon Joel Osteen, Joyce Meyers and other Word of Faith or Prosperity Gospel teachings, your foundations are built upon sinking sand. Please re-examine. There is actually greater hope and comfort in submitting oneself under an all-powerful, infinitely-wise Being who loves and cares for His people according to His own wisdom, love, care and justice.

Mathew 19:24: "Again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."

Apparently the problem(s) with this model's prior inexplicably high projections of cases and deaths for Alabama have been corrected:

Alabama: 923 total COVID-19 deaths projected by August 4, 2020

I'd imagine Auburn's earlier spring break played a bigger role as kids came back to campus. Their spring break was 3/9-3/13. Lanett is a good 30 minutes from Auburn, and it's not really a commuter city. It's certainly possible contaminated people from Chambers brought it to Lee, but I think students coming back from Spring Break makes more sense.

Just thought I would pop in and tell you guys that my condition has improved to the point that the doctor just informed me that I can go home. My blood oxygen level is back to normal and my cough has gotten better. I am still testing positive but I am going home to self quarantine and then report to a local doctor to be tested again in two weeks. It was a rough couple of weeks but praise God, I am going home. I am gonna surprise the kids. My mom is picking me up in about an hour. Gonna take home some nicotine patches. Giving up smoking has been one positive thing that happened while I was sick. Thank you for the support and prayers. I really do appreciate it.

Good to see that, based on that, we never come close to overrunning the hospital beds or ICU beds.
