Interesting that Italy has a large Chinese population. I wonder if there is any correlation with their infection rate (such as from earlier traveling back and forth), or if it's only a coincidence?

quote:

Many companies are using inexpensive immigrant labor to manufacture handbags that bear the coveted “Made in Italy” label.

More than ten per cent of Prato’s two hundred thousand legal residents are Chinese. According to Francesco Nannucci, the head of the police’s investigative unit in Prato, the city is also home to some ten thousand Chinese people who are there illegally.

Prato is believed to have the second-largest Chinese population of any European city, after Paris, and it has the highest proportion of immigrants in Italy.

A Chinese proprietor estimated that more than a hundred Chinese-owned workshops in Tuscany were assembling bags for the famous fashion houses.

Without a doubt. I read that many went home for the Chinese New Year. Especially to coastal regions already heavily infected. They returned to Italy bringing the virus in large numbers.

ADPH also just created this county map that is similar to global one by Johns Hopkins.

This makes perfect sense.

The greater population density, the greater chance for community spread. Jefferson has over twice the density of Montgomery (and is also higher than Italy).

It is interesting that Montgomery only has 3 confirmed cases. I wonder if that's from a lack either testing or getting the results back. It's important to remember that some or most of these are tests that were run several days ago. For example, 2 of the Elmore county ones are related to a friend. They 'knew' they had it and were being quarantined and treated for it before Alabama had a single announced case. When the news broke, my friend was surprised it wasn't them because the family had known for several days.

Also, that map is full on suck. Lots of work for what can be communicated vastly simpler and faster with a circa-1995 HTML table.

According to ADPH, in the last 4 days, 1043 samples sent to the testing laboratory from #Tuscaloosa County at the @dchsystem site. There have been 40 processed with 1 positive. 528 of the 1043 samples were not sufficient or spoiled. There are 475 samples still in process.

I know of a few that have been sick, tested “negative” for the flu, so they assume they are positive for Covid19, but they weren’t officially tested for it

I think it also depends on the demographic for the area. In NC Charlotte there are far more people in the city and so it more dense then Raleigh which is located in Wake County and more spread out. Over half the cases though are in Wake for the state and the majority are in the surrounding area of Wake. The Triangle which includes the counties of Wake(Raleigh), Orange(Chapel Hill), and Durham(Durham/Duke) plus the the Triangle Research area in the middle of all that. Three major universities and a huge research area combine for a lot of international people and travel and a lot more exposure.

If I have learned anything in my short time on this earth is that no matter is thrown at us it will not kill our human spirit.

Hope everyone is doing well and is in good spirits this Friday evening.

I think it's just so methodical of a spread. You say Research triangle would have more than Charlotte due to a variety of reasons, but Charlotte has an airport that I imagine is 3X the size of RDU. I'd imagine once this virus gets a foothold in the Queen City, the numbers will quickly jump in Mecklenburg County.

I think the industry combined with the international workers that travel so much and the Triangle which has three major areas all in the same vicinity combing close to the size of Charlotte. I think another major difference for Charlotte is it flagship college is mostly locals from the surrounding area with a handful of other smaller colleges like Davidson and whatnot as compared to the Triangle where you have 3 major universities within 20 minutes of each other(2 7 miles apart) that have a large national and international student body and many other smaller schools as well like them that bring in more then just passing by people where as in the Triangle they is a huge international makeup in the communities.

In the end though I agree Charlotte may surpass due to limited resources in the community as there is a huge wealth disparity in Charlotte vs Raleigh and were not able to maybe put in place some of the measures that have taken place here in the Triangle.
