The TOP stat worries me; if Bama allows the better SEC teams to dominate time of possession like CSU did the Tide will lose at least a couple of games this year.

They dominated TOP while being down three scores most of the night.

CSU is nowhere near as good as the better SEC teams and couldn't take advantage, but there are teams in the SEC that are good enough to make Bama pay for an eight minute TOP advantage.

I don't think we are good as years last but I'm not worried. Maybe if it was still the BCS system but I feel like we can easily win the SEC and make a 4 team playoff again. Hell, we've already beat one of these most talented and well coached teams in the country in week 1.

Teams have obviously seen something on film because Fresno was able to move the ball effectively with quick passes. Colorado State started the game off with long developing pass plays and paid the price for it. They only had 11 yards at the end of the first quarter. But then they started getting the ball out of their QB's hands after two or three steps and started moving the football as a result.

It's very difficult to effect the QB when he's getting the ball to his receiver after taking only two or three steps back. And most of those completions seem to be against our youthful LBs. They are taking advantage of our weakness in the middle of the field. Once Moses, Jennings, and Evans are back I am sure a lot of those problems will be solved. If not...it could be a long season for our defense.

Just an FYI, they built that TOP advantage almost exclusively after the starting skill guys came out of the game. We had roughly 3:30 of possession in the fourth quarter to their 11:30. And that includes the first group coming back in to run out the game.

If our main offensive guys stay in the game, we very likely win the TOP battle or it's a lot closer than it ended up.

Agreed; does anyone know when these guys will return?

It's all speculation but many believe they will either be back for Vandy or Ole Miss. Nothing has been said by the coaches.

Excellent point, and I may be overly concerned about it for this one game, but losing TOP (badly, I might add) cost us last year's national championship game.

I guess I should appreciate the fact that CSU holding the ball for almost 34 minutes allowed some of our younger defensive players to gain valuable game experience.

Saban himself said after the game he might have started subbing too soon. We were destroying them and lost intensity after going up 17. Had we left in the starters on O we score 50 plus.

We don't have a pass rush. Can't complain too much tho, just shows how special the group of Williams, Allen, Tomlinson,Robinson, Foster, Ragland etc were.....we are spoiled to a degree to expect that same level of dominance from this group. You don't lose that type talent without a drop off.

I still think we win the SEC and thats all I really expected from this team to do this year, cause I knew the defense would take a step back. Doesn't help we are down 4 linebackers which is making us play a ton of young inexperienced players.

At least we have something different to complain about this week.

Edit: my biggest complaint is I have teased Bama's line down two weeks in a row and they still didn't cover.

I'd be a lot more concerned if Vanderbilt didn't look like the second toughest game left.

Let's throw out last night's game and I'd still say we struggle with TOP going back to last year. That was the biggest takeaway from the Clemson game. I was hoping it would be a point of emphasis heading into this year but I guess not. We're still more prone to having big plays than time-eating drives.

This series really frustrated me last night: 14-0 with 5:17 to go in the first. Have a nice little drive going that we started at our own 39. It's 3rd and 3 from the 28. Instead of running Harris (who was feeling it at that point) we throw a low percentage fade pass instead of taking what the defense is giving us and just getting the first down. At that point in the game, we get the first down and we most likely end up in the endzone. Worst case, we stall out after using a little more clock but have a little closer to attempt a FG. Why call that play? (We had a similar call against FSU) CSU was reeling and it was a good chance of killing their will. Instead, we settle for a 46 yard FG attempt (Which we make. Good for Pappanastos).

If our defense is going to be taking a step back, then it is imperative that our offense hold onto the ball. Take what the defense gives us. To use a golf analogy, hit the shots we know we can hit in certain situations.

Our DL is average. Period. Our LB corps after the injuries is just plain bad. They literally can't defend a RB screen. Like candy from a baby...every. single. time. I'm scared to think about what some actual offensive talent like OM and MSU may do to this defense. We all need to be praying very hard for Evans and Jennings to heal quickly. This is perhaps the worst defense we have since 2007. Especially in the front 7. The last 3 quarters last night were nothing less than shameful.

Bama scored quickly thanks to 2 long pass plays to Ridley and Foster. And as was pointed out earlier, a lot of that TOP came with reserves in and long drives by CSU.

CSU had 3.6 yards per carry and 6.5 yards per pass with 2 INTs. Those aren't exactly eye popping numbers. The game was never in doubt, does it look bad? Sure. Is this team perfect? No. Can they win a NC? Yeah absolutely. But it is the third week of the season. I'd rather watch them struggle now, with 5 linebackers out, then watch them struggle later in the season. Like when we dominated most of last season and then struggled more in the post season.

It's a long season and there are teams that are competing for a NC that have far more to worry about then we do.

They were whipped at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball by a Mountain West team. That's my biggest concern. They'll probably still be able to win this conference, because it kind of sucks. But they need to get way better at the point of attack in order to win it all

We're not going to lose. This has the makings of being an ugly 24-7 type game.
