Alabama’s players returned to the practice field Wednesday afternoon after its first two-a-day practice for its eighth session of fall camp. The Crimson Tide practiced indoors and in full pads on a mostly-cloudy, 88-degree afternoon.

Here are several tidbits from the Crimson Tide’s second Wednesday practice in Tuscaloosa:

- Freshman running back Joshua Jacobs appeared to be limited for a second consecutive day, as he stood at the back of the tailback line during the two viewing periods. Walk-on Derrick Gore was also missing from practice again.

- Bo Scarbrough and Damien Harris led the running backs through individual drills inside the indoor facility. B.J. Emmons, Avery Reid,Lawrence Erekosima and a new back wearing No. 47 made up the rest of the tailback line.

- As the players retreated to the indoor facility, we received our first look at the running backs. Strength and conditioning coach Scott Cochran lurked around the tailbacks, attempting to punch the footballs from their grasps.

- The receivers spent the entire second period with the quarterbacks, breaking up into two lines to run routes. ArDarius Stewart, Cam Sims,Xavian Marks and T.J. Simmons made up one line, while Calvin Ridley,Gehrig Dieter, Derek Kief, Raheem Falkins and Robert Foster were in the other. Falkins did not participate in all of the wide receiver drills Wednesday.

- Toward the end of the viewing portion, the secondary appeared to line up in its dime package as Nick Saban and defensive backs coach Derrick Ansley looked on. Marlon Humphrey and Kendall Sheffield were the cornerbacks, Eddie Jackson and Ronnie Harrison were the safeties,Minkah Fitzpatrick was the Star and Laurence Jones was the Money.

- Freshman receiver Trevon Diggs continues to practice with the safeties, wearing a crimson No. 7 jersey.

- Inside linebacker Keith Holcombe was missing for the first viewing period, but he jogged onto the practice field and joined his teammates in individual drills with Jeremy Pruitt for the second of two media viewing periods.

- NFL scouts from the Atlanta Falcons, Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers watched Wednesday’s practice.

*** What’s next: Saban will hold a post-practice press conference at approximately 5 p.m. CT.

Nick Saban is 64, so unless they develop the technology that lets you upload your consciousness into a computer pretty soon, he won't be the Alabama football coach for that much longer. But does he already have his eye on the exit door? Clay Travis thinks so. The FS1 personality bases his opinion on the fact that Saban reportedly apologized to Paul Finebaum (and his SID, for making his job harder) after the tongue-lashing he delivered on the SEC Network set during media days.

Travis argues that Saban has never cared what the media thinks – until now. He hypothesizes that it's part of Saban's plan to move straight from Tuscaloosa to the College GameDay set. I guess that could be what's happening, but there's also might be a much simpler explanation.

We know about this Saban apology because someone close to him leaked it. There's a good chance Saban has smoothed things over with media members after his previous blow-ups with reporters but we just never found out about it because the person he blew up at, unlike Finebaum, wasn't famous enough for it to be a major news story.

Also, Saban and Finebaum have a longstanding relationship, and it's a normal human thing to do to apologize to someone you care about after you have a fight.

What do you think?

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama is now through seven days and eight practices of its fall camp work.

Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban spoke with reporters following Wednesday’s session to break everything down.

Saban said:

-I see our players making a little bit of progress and improvement today.

-We had to go inside because of the rain which made the conditions easier for them. It made it easier to focus.

-I’m trying to get the players to understand that great competitors can focus no matter what. Don’t let the elements, crowd or whatever affect you.

-It takes passion and perseverance to be able to challenge yourself to fight through all adversity.

-We have turned the Maurice Smith transfer situation over to the SEC. It is out of our hands.

-Fall camp is about figuring which guys we need to take time to develop because they’ll help us this year.

-We’re very sorry to hear about the passing of John Saunders. He was a gentleman and a great journalist.

-Joshua Jacobs has a thigh contusion. He is day-to-day, but should be fine long term.

-Kendall Sheffield is a work-in-progress at cornerback right now. We as coaches have to do a better job of getting him ready to play.

-Brandon Greene is working at tight end only. He’s lost some weight. He can be a good blocker at that position. I feel a lot better about the tight end position.

-Calvin Ridley is a mature competitor. He’s a hard guy to cover. He’s gotten bigger and stronger. He has big play potential. I have not seen attitude that suggest he isn’t working hard to get better.

-It’s going to be important for young players in the secondary to develop and provide some depth. We have to get them ready for what we do, and for what the other teams throw at us.

-Minkah Fitzpatrick is having to play both cornerback and star. I’d like for a guy not to have to do that, but we may not have the luxury to do that. He’s very versatile, he’s smart and works hard. If there’s anybody who can do both, he’s the guy who can do it.

Sounds like Sheffield is the corner opposite to Humphrey if it sticks.

Sounds like Sheffield, Evans, Bozeman, and Barnett will be the guys as of now for positions up for grabs.

I don't read it quite that way yet. I think maybe they would like Sheffield to be the other corner, or at least provide depth there, but he's not up to speed yet. So they are letting Minkah learn the Money position as his second job while Kendall gets more reps at corner to get prepared. I think if they played tomorrow, Minkah would be the corner at least when we're not in nickel or dime, then when we bring in those packages, Minkah slides to Money and Kendall becomes the corner. JMO

Not sure if I like Minkah splitting time between Star & CB either...

Money is a box safety position. The only 2 getting reps there are Hootie jones and Ronnie Harrison. So that's not true.

Minkah Fitzpatrick is going to play star this year. We are in 5 DB or more sets 85 percent of the time statistically. 1 more DB has to play 85 percent of snaps and that will more than likely be Sheffield as an outside corner.

It would only happen against LSU and Arkansas more than likely when they run multiple TE's with only 2 WR's.

SAT is correct, they do not want Fitz to play both ways, and throw someone in at outside DB on nickel situations which, we are in most of the time.

We need someone to secure that outside DB position to keep Fitz inside on Nickel packages.

Right now Sheff, AA, Mayden, Carter all have a descent chance. I am hearing that someone needs to grab it by the horns.

SEC Country's Observations of Practice Day #7

Snippet:

quote:

Cooper Bateman, Blake Barnett and Jalen Hurts are Alabama’s three healthy quarterbacks. Barnett and Hurts throw the best ball of the three. They both have great zip on their passes. It was noticeable on both the deeper throws and some of the quick routes we were able to see during the viewing period. Bateman puts too much air under the ball at times on some of the longer throws. Bateman looked good on some of the quicker routes like throws to the tight ends. But the receivers had to slow down on a couple of occasions to wait on the football when Bateman was throwing longer passes. That doesn’t happen often with Barnett or Hurts. That could be problematic against the speed of some of these SEC defenses.

Everybody appears to be saying the same thing about this QB situation. I don't think the staff feels good about leaning on the running game the way they did last season with Henry making defenses quit.

I realize that most had counted out Blake and Jake prior to their final seasons, but it just seems Bateman is clearly outclassed by the youngsters in this competition.

OH NO! Sacrifice the children now so they don't have to see the horror!

Seriously, and this is not directed at TideSaint (thanks for the link, actually), but the narrative that Bateman's long ball is some catastrophic flaw in his game simply isn't reality.

Does he throw the best long ball on the team? No. But the only reason it's even noticed by fans on this and other boards is that, because a couple of pseudo-journalists needed website clicks in June, everyone is looking for it. I can assure you that if you had the same bug placed in your ear about the deficiencies in Barnett's or Hurt's games, you'd find equatable, repeated "flaws".

Simply put, while I agree that Bateman's long ball is not his strength, he apparently does a lot of other stuff really well - so well, in fact, that he's the leader at QB until spoken otherwise by Saban or Kiffin.

Bateman brings a lot of good qualities to the table, and may very well end up the starter. The storyline that Barnett or Hurts is winning the QB job or that Bateman is losing it IN FALL CAMP BEFORE WE EVEN HAVE A SCRIMMAGE BASED ON REPORTS ABOUT FLY PATTERNS DURING THE 15-MINUTE MEDIA VIEWING PERIOD is asinine and quite frankly, akin to gossipy women yapping their wiener-warmers at the hair salon.

Bateman to Howard (a few days ago)

An SEC defense would eat that up. Oh, wait...

Yes, exactly. It's called confirmation bias.

When that analyst said a couple months ago that Bateman's long ball tends to come apart on him, most people interpreted that to mean that every single long ball comes apart; as in 10 out of 10. I'm guessing the reality is more like 2 out of 10 (which is a reason for concern) but I think there's a huge disparity between perception and reality.

Do we need our QB to be able to connect on the long ball? Yes.
Could Bateman miss a long ball that costs us a game? Yes.
Is Bateman capable of connecting on a long ball to win a game? Yes.

I think it's too early to say that with the possible exception of Bozeman.
AA worked at CB with the 1's today.

Not even sure it matters to much if he floats a few because it seems most of the times that we are throwing deep balls we are wide opened. Especially to Ridley since no DB seems to be able to cover him. Just saying

Hitting a receiver in stride could be the difference between a TD or a INT. If the receivers have to slow down, that is just wasting their speed and gives the DB a chance to catch up.

Prev, I have a hard time understanding why Bateman was asked to take reps at WR in the past if it was believed he was the future at QB. (And whatever the theory or reasoning I'm not buying it, sorry)

I agree the media will look to create a story whether accurate or not for clicks, but this doesn't feel like the case here.

It seems fairly clear that the two younger guys are very, very talented, and Bateman or whoever wins the job will likely have overcome the odds to do so. JMO
