And just now, Tim Watts posted that he spoke with someone from the 247 PSU site and confirmed that Josh Gattis is now a candidate for the WR coach opening, and possible Co-OC

Or maybe qb coach. I am pretty sure all the qbs would benefit from a coach that can actually coach the qb to get better. Locksley could still coach receivers and be the O.C.

According to Chris Low's tweet, Locksley will be the OC and QB coach. LINK

I wonder if that's an indication Freeze might get an analyst role (at most) instead of on-field staff.

Alabama to add Penn State WR coach to staff in same capacity

quote:

Penn State passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach Josh Gattis is expected to be named Alabama's next wide receivers coach, BamaOnLine.com and publisher Tim Watts has learned.

Gattis spent the last four years coaching the Nittany Lions' wideouts and passing game under former Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin.

Alabama co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach Mike Locksley is being promoted to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, creating the spot on Nick Saban's staff for Gattis.

Gattis is entering his eighth season in the coaching ranks and is in his sixth year as a member of Franklin's staff.

Gattis' receivers helped the Nittany Lions claim the 2016 Big Ten Championship, led by junior Chris Godwin, who claimed All-Big Ten accolades for the second-straight season with an appearance on the third team in 2016.

He first joined Franklin's staff at Vanderbilt in 2012 and tutored Jordan Matthews to All-America accolades twice. Matthews ended his career as the SEC's career leader in receptions (262) and receiving yards (3,759), while also owning the SEC season mark with 107 catches, set in 2013.

Gattis broke into coaching as a graduate assistant at North Carolina (2010) on the offensive staff. After that, he spent one season as Western Michigan's wide receivers coach before moving on to Vandy.

Gattis was among the top recruiters at Penn State. He signed one of the nation's top wide receivers classes in December, led by the top player at the position in 5-star  Justin Shorter and is currently the No. 14 coach in the 247Sports Composite recruiter rankings and No. 5 in the Big Ten.

Before switching to coaching, Gattis earned All-ACC honors as a safety at Wake Forest and spent two seasons playing for the Chicago Bears.

In addition to Gattis, Alabama has also officially added defensive assistant Pete Golding and special teams coordinator Jeff Banks to its staff. Karl Scott is also joining the Crimson Tide as defensive backs coach. Those four hires complete the staff, but more openings could occur soon.

Won't be surprised to see Chris Weinke move from his analyst position to WR coach.

Almost guarantee that won't happen.

Weinke is a QB mechanics coach, he knows nadda about WRs and recruiting(almost all WR Coaches are ace recruiters).

If he moves on field, it will be as QB Coach for another team.

Was told last night that Bama found out more on freeze, may make him a non option. Will see what happens.

Gattis is the offensive recruiting coordinator for Penn State. He played at Wake Forest and is from Durham, North Carolina.

He seems to recruit the state of Florida for Penn State.

Josh Gattis' Recruiting Profile

He's the #13 ranked recruiter overall for the Class of 2018.

One important thing about analyst staff is that NCAA rules allow them to supervise voluntary off-season workouts/drills. On field staff cannot do that.

And that is exactly why you let your compliance department and athletic department make objections and do their job and don't just defer to the Head Coach because he has won a bunch of games.

They named Locksley OC and QB coach. So unless they change that, QB coach position is filled.

We will have to see what the official release states. Or it could even stretch to when the BOT meets to approve contracts. Official titles are usually listed on those documents.

Freeze could still be hired as the TE coach with Pannunzio taking an off the field role. Someone on BOL said he is definitely not going to be on the field next season because he is having both knees replaced.

SOURCE: #PennState WR coach Josh Gattis is expected to take a job on the #Alabama staff. I'm told he will become a Co-OC with the Tide. Football Scoop 1st reported the move.

How many Co-OCs can a staff have?
