Have you ever paid attention to the type of defensive assistants that are hired? Their background?

Kevin Steele came from a 4-3 scheme when he was hired in '07 as did Kirby Smart before Saban got a hold of him in '04. Pruitt was the only DC we ever had under Saban who had previous coordinator experience and he even used a hybrid 3-4/4-3 at Florida State.

He coached most of career in the 3-4. Either with Nebraska or Carolina. He also employed some of it as head coach at Baylor.

But the bigger difference isn't the 3-4 versus 4-3. It is the scheme on the backend that Chizik is married to.

Yeah I don't see how a pure Tampa 2 guy like Chizik is going to be able to run the kind of defense Saban wants. I'd be cool with him as like LBs coach/assistant HC/recruiting coordinator though.

A guy on BOL is saying that Locksley is leveraging leaving the staff altogether if he doesn't get the OC job . The same dude was one of the first to say Chip Long was being looked at for the position.

I didn't catch this edit.

This just isn't true. I touched on it already, but Steele had run 3-4 and 4-3 under most of his career. They are very similar in style.

But this is all a moot point. Unless you're talking about chizik for just a ILBs job.

Then he is probably out. Which he was already rumored to be anyway. I would hate to lose his recruiting ties to Maryland, D.C., northern Virginia. He has brought some things to the Alabama offense, but I am skeptical of his playcalling based on his time at Illinois and Maryland.

Saban even ran a 43 at LSU.

Modern passing games can destroy Tampa 2, why it's dying out. Wasn't initially built to stop 3 WR sets consistently, holes are easier to find.

I'm assuming that Locksley can go somewhere else and get an OC job, but I would hope Nick backs up the Brinks truck to try and buy his services as a Co-OC/WR coach for at least another year or so

I feel like this has kind of been the sentiment all along, hasn't it?

There were a couple folks saying that we might be able to keep Locksley by paying him. It looks like that was a pipe dream now, though. We will see.

I’m being told Long will have an interview but he is very happy at ND. Lock is still in the mix. Could go either way. I’ll post when I know.

Bye. Locksley is not the right person for the job. Probably lose on some recruits, but you have to get the right person for the job.

Personally I prefer better coordinators over better recruiters. It's going to be interesting to see how this unfolds.

Looking more at Chip Long's coaching history. He was a GA under Bobby Petrino at Louisville and Arkansas. He got his first assistant job with Paul Petrino at Illinois.

I'd be pretty happy with this hire.

I would not be surprised to see the new OC and ILBs coach in place before the week is out. A huge recruiting weekend is coming up and Saban will want everyone in place if possible.

If Chip Long did come who would be the QB coach? It looks like Chip has always been a TE coach.

The more I read about his time at Arizona State, Memphis, and Notre Dame, the more I hope this hire happens. His ties to Alabama just make it all the more interesting. I will be disappointed if this does not happen.

Chip Long's offensive philosophy appears to match what Saban seems to want. Modern power-spread RPO & play action passing attack and physical run game.

Bobby Petrino is an excellent offensive mind & QB coach, and in-game play caller. Chip Long probably learned well from him.
