D will have their minutes cut. Any thoughts on who he is talking about?

Could be anyone as seems not a soul is interested in defense.

Holloway has probably been statistically the worst defender on the entire team thus far.
With Youngblood and Mallette now available, that'd be my initial guess, but I think this is probably just a blanket statement by Oats to get their attention.
But whatever he's doing with the rotations right now, I wish he'd get it worked out. I hate it.

Ditto. It needs to be figured out very soon. Oklahoma will be in Tuscaloosa in a little over a week from now and they will likely be 13-0 when they arrive. SEC play is going to be brutal this year.

Even though he said that, some of the guys that are inconsistent on D won't be left out of the rotation. I'm assuming he's talking about effort, but there's a difference between a lack of effort on D and learning positioning.
If he really wants to hold to his statement, you'll see Sears on the bench which we know isn't going to happen. I feel like he's inconsistent with defensive effort. A guy like Mallette was busting his arse last game but got caught in the wrong spot a few times.
And if we want to be real, some of it is on Oats. His defensive system isn't varied enough and doesn't adjust well. He was having guys dig down off the hot shooter to double the ball. The didn't full deny him, double team him off ball screens when he had the dribble, or sit on his right shoulder and make his arse go left.
With their athleticism, they should be much better on team defense.

Just a thought. Is it likely that the odd rotations were deliberately planned to really expose some individual weaknesses?

Oh yeah, I'm pretty sure he does this every year.
And I'm a complete believer in my own personal hypothesis that he lets them suffer in games when they're not doing what they're supposed to be doing — i.e., "You're out of position and playing sloppy, and they've just gone on a 13–2 run? Let's all watch and see what happens next, because I'm not calling timeout to bail your asses out of this one."
I totally believe in what he's doing, I just mean I'm ready for him to teach these lessons and move on, because it's a painful process to watch.
It'll pay off in the end.

If we're being totally honest, Dakota Durant is, at times, a defensive liability, but the stretch-four part of his game makes him so much more + on the +/- sheet, Oats would almost never take him out for extremely long stretches.

The timeout theory is where I’m at too. He’s basically telling them to figure it out when I’m losing my shite pleading for him to call the freaking timeout

It took me a minute.
We just need guys to settle into their roles and stop trying to do too much. Early in the season everyone is excited and trying to show their best and make sure they earn PT. Every player on the team wanted to be the hot shooter. Sometimes less is more.
Also these guys havent played together very much. Chemistry will improve. I still think our depth is a big advantage against most every team. We have seen it be effective this year with tiring teams out or causing foul trouble. Fresh legs can win games.

This would be my number one guess but reality is it’s a good message period.
