I honestly think there wasn’t any scouting going on at the end. We were just starting hunting. Those later classes were some of our best classes from a star ranking standpoint but they were filled with more busts and missing the gritty under the radar guys.

I think the classes most impacted by COVID restrictions (2021 and 2022) really, really fricked with the culture of the program because the coaches didn't have the ability to get to know the kids as well. Once too many cancerous personalities, soft players, and headcases got in the locker room it snowballed a bit because they had more influence than they ever did in the past.

Here are the top players from the 2023 class:

Qua Russaw
Kadyn Proctor
Caleb Downs
Keon Keely
Desmond Ricks
Richard Young
Justice Haynes
James Smith
Eli Holstein
Dylan Longeran
Jahil Hurley

A couple of 1st round players and several that straight up were not good.

I think towards the end something went awry with the scouting element of the Saban regime. It was most pronounced at OL, WR, and RB. DL problems seem to be less scout and more that we were getting outbid by sneaker and oil money.

Consider the timing and then consider how Saban did his player evals throughout his career.

Saban relied heavily on his camps and time spent with a player to get an understanding of their competitive mental makeup.

Covid happens and affects 2020 and 2021. Camps didn't happen and and in person time with the recruits didn't happen. They had to rely fully on recruiting rankings and and film. They were blind to the true mental makeup of the players coming into the building and you can see why things worked out like they did and why the teams from 2021 on struggled with discipline and mindset. The last of that era filtered out over this last offseason.

Agree with you and JIB. An underrated part of it is also the assistants/recruiters we were bringing it were mostly trash or just using us as a quick stepping stone.

Saban talked about having a harder time hiring assistants because of his age. We used to have analysts and position coaches who had run entire programs and knew what talent evaluation and scouting should look like. That fell off big time at the end.

The further we get away from the end of the Saban era the more I think it happened exactly when it should’ve. He’s very happy now, we landed the best of the available coaches. I guess in an a perfect world we’d have had some Wunderkind lined up as coach in waiting so the turnover in the program wouldn’t have been so bumpy but all those possible coaches landed dream jobs or fricked and drank their way out of ever being considered.

People forget Saban won the SEC and barely lost to the eventual national champion in the 4 team playoff in his last year. The champion who cheated multiple times that season and should probably have stricken from the record books by the way.

I shudder to think who we would go after if KDB left … thankful we have him

No doubt. The next year if Saban stays we probably run it back with Milroe and Tommy Rees and then Saban retires and lose the same players we lost so I think it was probably good from a timing perspective anyway. I don’t see a world in which Milroe/Rees get much better with another year. We got out ahead a little bit with the new normal of having a GM and it’s hard to do much better in the coaching carousel than a guy coming off a National Title game in year 2 at a school that isn’t known lately for being a football powerhouse
