I can’t remember what year in was, early seventies. But Herbie come unglued on Ch.6 after what he felt Bama was robbed from the national championship.

He had a frickin come apart on live TV that evening, they cut to a commercial, lol.

I was just a kid at the time but looking back, yeah he was definitely geeked up on the blow, lol

I remember that … Herbie was a nice guy one on one but had an ego that would fill Legion Field.

I was there when they wouldn’t let him in the Talladega garage one time when he showed up in very short pastel tennis shorts and a matching flat cap. He was pissed off righteously but NASCAR had a strict dress code back then, no short pants in the garage, and it applied to everyone, they didn’t care who you were.

Herbie had to find some pants and sweat like the rest of us … when Talladega had a race in July or August, it was 16 shades hotter than the damn sun in the garage.

It was the July race back then, Winston 500 I believe. My father raced at BIR back then a little. This is back when the infield was world famous for anything and everything rednecks could dream up, lol

Herb was a character but you couldn’t help but like the guy. He was a big Bama fan and didn’t hide it. But I’m sure you knew him well and probably have some good stories about him, lol

I didn’t know him that well, he knew my boss better. I knew him well enough to where we said hello and chatted a second if we ran into each other.

The original spelling of his name was Wientjes, changed it for TV. He was a pretty fair football player at Jacksonville State under Charley Pell, had 500 yards rushing and led the team in kickoff returns as a senior. People at JSU told me he was a tough SOB who would fight you at the drop of a hat when he played.

He owns a restaurant on Lake Martin these days.

Saw Saban on a podcast, I think The Pivot, recently. He said he quit because he thought if he continued at the pace and workload he was, that it would kill him. They asked him about returning to coaching and he said he was happy doing what he is doing but if he ever did coach again then it would be In the NFL.

Could Saban handle the high pressure job of HC at Kent State? Has he gotten tired of watching the ducks or has Miss Terry worn his butt out?

Jeez. All these years, and most people still haven't learned who the decision maker is.

Here's your clue: it's the one who started the retirement conversation in the Saban household.

It’s hard to stop doing what you love. I spent nearly 50 years working for newspapers and I am pushing 70 and technically retired but I still string for a paper. Because I still love doing it down to the DNA in my bone marrow and the idea of sitting around doing absolutely nothing is equivalent to hell for me. Maybe Nick is the same way?

1. I would be shocked if Saban returns to college coaching.

2, I would be shocked if Saban takes over a low or mid tier NFL team in need of key pieces.

3. I would be surprised (but not shocked) if Saban took a top tier NFL job with an elite QB and roster that is ready to win right away. I don’t think he’s looking for this, but I could possibly see him giving it serious consideration if the right team called in the near future. But even if the stars aligned, I think he ultimately would still say no.

First off, let me say I think GMac got trolled or is completely full of shite. Either way, he needs to vet his sources better.

But hypothetically…if a team like the 49’ers called and asked Saban to replace Shanahan or if Dan Campbell at Detroit stepped away from the game, I could see Saban on a 1-2 year basis only, try to get a contender like that over the hump and get a Super Bowl ring along with his natties. I say it’s a long shot and all the stars would have to align perfectly for him to even consider it so it’s not happening.
