Question for the general audience. How does a school evaluate a guy that has barely played? Are they able to workout a player before they accept them as a transfer or do they have to go off of high school tape?

I might be wrong on this so could someone fact check me

I wonder how the process works when a player puts his name into the portal. Scholarship? Facility usage? Are they immediately giving up their scholarship? Are schools able to do any medical evaluations or testing to verify the health status of the player? Even free agents in pro sports have to be medically cleared before a new team can sign them.
If they decide to come back, doesn't the original coach and team have to agree to take them back? Just curious about the process.

What happens when a player enters the transfer portal?
quote:
Once a player enters the transfer portal, the program the athlete currently attends is no longer required to honor the player’s scholarship. Even if a player enters the transfer portal and later withdraws their name, their current program is no longer obligated to honor their scholarship.

Think more strength or lack thereof that led to him leaving. Also, the inability to add some much needed weight. He will get more money out at Texas though.
The Brockmeyer brothers dominated in a small private school lesague. I will be surprised if they get some huge NIL deal to transfer. They are not that good.

Thank you. I read the article.
Typically the player will remain as a student at the current institution until the transfer is complete. During that time period, does the player still have access to the team facilities, resources and benefits of being a scholarship athlete for that school or is he just on his own?
Maybe that would depend on whether the coach would want the player back if he asked? Just wondering.

From what I gather (which just my understanding and nothing official), once the player declares for the portal the school can pull the scholarship and the bells and whistles that go along with it (like access to practice facilities, etc.). Tuition is already covered for the semester and I can’t imagine the school being required to have the player around practice, locker rooms and other facilities, if the player has announced a desire to leave. The school’s decision as to whether or not to do that is probably driven by if they want to re-recruit the player (e.g. MBB Shackelford) or if they are not interested in having the player back on the team.

Once they declare Saban immediately separates them from the rest of the team.

Are there many players the board thinks are mis-evaluations from the Covid year shut down? If I remember correctly the coaches didn’t have an opportunity to view players in person/tape for at least a season.

I think this is a factor.

Not really a valid excuse IMO. If you are a coach at Alabama you should be able to recognize talent. Saban uses a pretty exact metric of player attributes he's looking for at each postion. We have a national recruiting base and outrageous facilities. We shouldn't be having so many misses on the recruiting trail. A lot of those guys in the portal never showed shite.

The quote above by the msu player is very eyebrow raising.

We have misses in every class but the transfer portal magnifies it now because they just go whether encouraged by the staff or for whatever reason. Before the portal the attrition was less but that is because there were very few options to do so. So the misses have always been there and we have seen it in results for years like 2013 & 2014. The other difference without the portal is before that they stayed and a few of them finally bought in. If the portal has always been this would Mac stayed and waited his turn?
Go look at past classes and see who produced. I would wager a 3rd if not more of every class under Saban has had players that did not meet the expectations of the fans and/or staff. But they stayed on the roster because transferring was not a great option with sit out and getting releases.

the fact that only a few of Bama Portal guys show out at their other school shows that Bama did not really miss that kid. The one going to Ark had a great year. But someone posted an article that showed how most of last years kids did not pan out elsewhere.
