I think it is interesting how I doubt Alabama fans will ever really like this defensive scheme. It has some real limitations. However, it is the exact medicine for the Vols veer n shoot scheme. Keep the plays in front of you. Make them throw underneath and rally to the tackle. Make them be stubborn with the run. Make them execute long drives. Do not stick in man coverage so much that it is a matter of time because one corner gets cooked and you've given them a 1 play, 87 yard TD drive.

Yeah, that was Tennessee's worst offensive output of the season, both by points and yards (the latter is even more impressive when you consider that they gained large chunks of yardage in junk time). They're maybe the best offense in the country - just really hard to stop - and, excluding the goal line pick six, they weren't really shooting themselves in the foot.

Our defense has its issues, but last night was anything but an indictment of the scheme or the talent.

Oh yeah, and regarding the Sean McDonough discussion, he seems to regard us about on the level of Hitler, which makes him one of the most pro-Alabama people ESPN has and a pure Gump compared to GMac.

Matt Austin needs to be off the broadcast. If I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt, maybe he was having an Alabama hate circlejerk with Booger or whoever and wasn't really paying attention to the plays he was commenting on.

Daniel Hill looked really good in the 4th

He supposedly finally healthy. DeBo has pretty much been saying that Hill had the best fall camp and was a beast when healthy.

We are a TERRIBLE open field tackling team.

I've been screaming this since the first game. Our pursuit angles and tackling fundamentals are terrible.

I thought Red Morgan and Dijon Lee looked good.

Morgan was the only defender we had that was tackling at the point of contact. He needs more PT. Lee is a future All American. I love Lawson but he's slow as I am. James Smith played a great game and has a high motor. He reminds me of Nick Gentry. He just never quits on a play.

Amazing crowd last night.

I'm not sure if anyone else watches the 4K broadcast of the game but there are very few commercials. The camera stays on the crowd during the breaks. The crowd in the second half was absolutely incredible. During that breaks, that place was ROCKING.

I agree with the assessment that Grubb was too conservative. We either needed to run more to the outside or should have committed to the pass. Ty could have thrown for 500 yds. To me, Jam's vision needs work, he'll see there isn't a hole and hits it anyway. When it's not there bounce it outside. Hill is a little better at that to me.

Sean McDonough is one of the best play by play guys working today. He’s fantastic.

3. Offensive line played fairly well. Not great but most of the time Ty had time to throw the ball. Run blocking was so so but see above. Tough to go 5 on 7.

Tennessee was tied for #3 in the country in sacks with 26 coming into the game.

OLine allowed 0 sacks last night. Absolutely outstanding considering who they were up against.

Alabama's game plan for the last 3 weeks was ball control to limit potent offenses opportunities. After the bye, we face arguably the best 3 defenses in the SEC. I think you will see Deboer and Grubb open it up and go full throttle for 4 qtrs. Self scouting our tendencies will be important, also.

I guess all OCs get into their own heads when playing calling, overthinking.
I do find comfort in the fact that this offense has still yet to play its A game , and I feel like it is coming.

Love these just for the non-filtered crowd noise.

I was there last night and it was absolutely nuts. The pick 6 could have been heard from outer space. It’s the best it’s been in a long time. Side note, I got to chat with Nate Oats for a bit. He is feeling really good about this team.

I don't know. I thought we did good in that area but were just grossly out of position.

McDonough actually stood up for Bama on the pass that the ESPN rules official said was a drop by Ryan Williams.

I never saw it hit the ground, and I'm glad that McDonough didn't go along with their retired official.

Ya know, I never understood what the official was talking about. I mean, you can juggle a pass and still catch it. It never showed it hitting the ground. I still don’t get it - neither did McDonough.

Greg tries waaaay too hard to not be biased. I mean Cole Cubelic knows how to call a game, regardless of who is playing (even Auburn).

Grubb's offensive play calling was so so

Grubb had some nice stuff dialed up early in the game but the execution was a little off. I'm not sure what happened during halftime but it seemed like Grubb was more interested in shortening the game than going after UT's D.

quote:

Ty played pretty well

Ty came out too amped in the 1st quarter. He overthrew 1 WR and if he had hit Williams in stride instead of making him leap for it he would have had a TD. I'm still shaking my head at that bonehead throw to Cuevas and the goal line. He was lucky to get away with that one. I will chalk it up to having his family in the stands and trying to impress everyone.

quote:

Defense played fairly well

They did. But I am tired on the lack on effort and the refusal to make contact by some players, especially our MLB who is the team captain and should be leading by example. Instead he overruns plays constantly and whiffs on tackles. I wonder what the game would have been like if Heupel had started the game like he did the 3rd quarter. Good seeing more of the young DBs and less of DJ who is playing himself into a 3rd day selection.

Sean McDonough SUCKS

I guess by know everyone knows McDonough called an clean game. McElroy got caught frontrunning a couple of times assuming Bama a made a penalty when the call was on UT. Hopefully that will straighten him out

11. Sean McDonough SUCKS. He acts like his mother married a guy from Alabama and the man physically abused him as a child. I know he doesn't work for the Crimson Tide Sports Network but Jesus, he NEVER has a positive thing to say about Alabama. Anytime Bama made a great play, it was always due to Bama getting away with committing a penalty, or pure luck or the Tennessee player fell down, etc. It just gets old.

You must be confusing him with Joe Tessitore. McDonough and McElroy actually do a bang up job of calling games and McDonough took up for Alabama on several calls.

Tessitore on the otherhand creams his pants everytime something doesn't go right for Alabama during a game. You can feel him rooting against Bama through the screen.

Alabama put Vandy and Tennessee away in the 2nd half.

You are saying you want Alabama to blow them out. There is a difference between putting a team away and blowing them out.

The Tennesse game is a good example of Grubb not having a killer instinct in times that call for it. We just came out of a half where we had a 99 yard td INT that was a fourteen point swing in our favor. It was a HUGE momentum swing in the game to our favor. We get the ball coming out of the half and instead of going for the kill shot and trying to push the ball down field, he hands the ball off two straight times up the middle and puts us in third and long. That sequence of playcalling made ZERO sense considering the circumstances. We should have been aggressive in trying to take advantage of getting the ball out of the half and basically ending the game right out of the gate. He does that a lot in second halfs. There are times in games that a score would essentially have the other team waving the white flag early in the second half. He needs to recognize those situations.
